  • My dad gave me this old John Deere PTO driven tractor air pump which I'd never even heard of before. It's covered in a thick layer of dried grease and I can't get anything to move. Let's see if we can get it working again! See the links below for the parts and tools I used:

I have acquired 3, one with the original hose and fitting . Just a great accessory when taking my 1951 model A to gatherings.
JD made those pto pumps starting in 1938.
    Thanks for the dissection.

I'm not sure how old mine is, any way to tell?

That was the only air pump we had on the farm in the 1950s. It was super because we didn’t have anything else. John Deere probably sold many thousands.

I had never heard of a a PTO air pump prior to my dad giving this one to me but it immediately made perfect sense. Why drag all of you equipment back to the barn if you could just attach a handy little pump? A huge time saver and easy to take out in the field.

I was wrong, besides the John Deere air pump we had another air pump that ran off an engine spark plug hole. The John Deere pump was just much handier to use. Eventually upgraded to an old logging truck air compressor and electric motor mounted on an old propane tank. Filled the propane tank with water to pressure test it using a grease gun and to weld the flanges on using a home made welder from Popular Mechanics plans.

Your pump that connected to the spark plug hole sounds really interesting but I could see how it wouldn't be as convenient. Do you remember what you used to lube the cylinder on your PTO pump?

@@Mikeattempts the John Deere PTO pump piston, wrist pin and cylinder only got whatever excess grease flew off the connecting rod and main journals. Ours was well used and abused, it is now in a neighbour’s farm museum collection.

@@va7da I would imagine you need to keep that leather seal from getting firm, I just don't know what is recommended. I'm sure a few drops of oil every now and then would be plenty.

Instead of soakind the "leather" in hot water just ckean itgood and soak it in hot engine oil.
