I fell in love with this nostalgic and haunting musical piece when I watched IN THE GOOD SUMMERTIME movie, years ago. I just love it so much. Marsha or Marcia, the musician that played it in the movie, did an excellent work as well.
Absolutely fabulous! High virtuosism by a high virtuoso full of musicianship. How can he play such a difficult work with such a freedom as if it costed him absolutely nothing to play it? BRAVISSIMO!
Aaron Rosand is one of the great of the violin, I love him sin 25 years ago. I love his performances on Sarasate, pure passion and great sound. great unique sound passionist
An abbreviated version of this was used in the film, "In the Good Old Summertime". I was raised on classic films so as a little girl I was more interested in listening to the songs than paying attention to music, but even as a little girl I loved listening to that little violin piece. I'm so happy to hear the full version now.
Some years ago I had the opportunity to meet and play chamber music with Mr.Rosand. In my opinion he has throughout his career consistantly demonstrated the highest standards of violin playing and musicianship.
Aaron was one of those gifted few who were born with a violin in their hand. Hard work, dedication, and love for music were his goals in life. He also appreciated a fine Havana cigar.
Has anyone heard Marcia Van Dyke play this in the movie "In the Good Old Summetime" from 1949? SHE'S AMAZING!!! I wish there was a video clip of it here on You Tube.
Simply great, amazing violin playing and sound giving from Mr. Rosand. It's a pity that I live in Austria in Vienna. I think I will never hear him live in concert... Thank You Mr. Rosand for your wonderful playing!!!
What comes out of the instrument has to be beautiful, musical, and with good taste. Getting on someone's case for having a shoulder rest or not having one is useless and a waste of time.
It's too bad Issac stern kept him off the American as well as a host of other wonderful violinists like Shumsky, Friedman. He could play stern under the table. NObody should have that kind of power. Elman hated Stern. He also tried to screw szeryng, but he had rubinstein as a sponsor. Rosand is one of the greatest violinsts ever
Auer and heifetz also prohibited the use of shoulder rests. It inhibits the sound by blocking some of the woods vibrations. When you don't use a shoulder rest the violin is a tad more powerful and also the use of the shoulder rest prohibits flexibility.
Without shoulder rest you block some vibrations of the back of the violin with your shoulder too. I respect who don t use but who have a high neck like me is much more confortable to play with a shoulder rest. By the way the modern shoulder rest they are so well placed just on the edges of the violin that actually the sound in this case and the vibration of the hole body of the instrument is much more free. I dont know if so many years later of the posting of this comment you will agree more with what I said.
Not true! The shoulder rest gets attached to the violin at the rims of the bottom lid. These points are vibrating nodes, that is, they do not oscillate or vibrate when the violin rings. In addition, the gap between the shoulder rest and the bottom lid allows it to oscillate freely. This wouldn't happen if your shoulder is pressing against the bottom lid.
fullargon sound really changes when one uses a shoulder rest, or hold the violin two firmly on the shoulder, from the sound one gets holding it the most gently or loose. bowing feels better with no rest to me. surely the left hand is less free though. i can deal with it depending on the fabric I wear and the chin rest. I am an amateur, by the way.
i think its different for each instrument. I played with a rest for all my life and when I finally removed it, the sound was more powerful and far more resonant.
i know i know i didn say he plays d i just said its a fucking bad sound you know? but thanks for the info yes the violin looked interesting thats wy i wannted to know...
Ladies and gentleman, not just on this video - not at all - please get off of reputations. So tired of reading how something has to be could or can't be bad because the performing is famous and/or playing on some ancient instrument. I'm not commenting on the playing in this video. I'm just saying, I'm sick of reading those silly coup de gras remarks. Just sayin'. If you're ever going to make it to "musician", stop the warship and the contrary rejection and trust your ears.
The shoulder kills many vibrations of the back of the violin. I understand the point of view of some "purists", but when you use a modern shoulder rest the back of the violin is just free and the body of the violin vibrate much more.
He's good, and he's got his soul in the sound. But he has a limited degree of colors and articulations. BEFORE you vote me down, listen to the scratch in his sound, especially in chords. He's just not in the Oistrakh/Heifetz/Milstein et al. class. He's got this rigid American school thing going on. He might have a wonderful legato and phrasing, but for all he's said to be, he's just not a Stern, or a Grumiaux...listen to AR's Sarasate video and tell me he had good intonation.
So clean.... You will be missed Maestro Rosand ❤❤

An outstanding violinist who is not as well-known as he should be!
And bravo to Mr. Rosand for a phenomenal performance!
A Very Great Artist Indeed =- most underrated.
I agree his Sarasate CD is the best available. Nothing Better.....

BAD SOUND?!?! that's the sound quality of the video.
he plays on a del gesu, and rosand is one of the leading violinists of today!
no, his playing is very poor. Awful actually, for a professional. How did he become known?

Brava super !!
Magnifico !!!
I love it. Excellent work.
Wow! Fantastic playing!
@dhackj It was held at the Sessions Family Mansion located in Bristol, Connecticut. :)
You are so right. My teacher encourage me try not to use a shoulder rest because it sometimes gets in the way. I can play with or without it.

The final phrases are pinched from one of Paganini's concertos 4, 5 or 6.
The house was built for manufacturer/banker William Edwin Sessions c. 1909.
such an innocent melody 3:40

Marvellous playing! Does anyone know where the beautiful venue is?
Here after brett and eddy's perfect pitch video:)
Actually the instrrument would not resonate anymore... quite the opposite. mrausar is right.
As in the composer Roger Sessions?

I know one thing for sure, next time I see a warship I'm going to remember what OddStatistic once said :D

Horrible sound. Suffocated G.
