I'm laying sick in bed right now, watching this again... It's almost a year and I still feel hollow because I left my heart there... OW GOSH I hate hearing/seeing myself on video, but I love the memories... I still cry knowing I will never be able to go back, but thanks thanks thanks for making this possible!!!

I don't need to stretch my imagination to grasp how these people felt. When LOTR first came out I was only just getting into genealogy. From the Fellowship onward, my fascination grew and grew. I watched the DVDs incessantly, and found myself yearning to see New Zealand for myself. The scene where Frodo is reading a book waiting for Gandalf to arrive made my heart skip beats and I had no clue why. Then I located my kin in New Zealand and my world blew open! My gggGrandparents and all of their children except my ggGrandfather immigrated to New Zealand, arriving in Christchurch in 1864 on board the vessel Indian Empire. Today their descendants represent amazing aspects of Kiwi jistory. My gGrandfather's cousin was Fanny Fantham, for whom the subsidiary peak of Mt. Taranaki was named. Geoffrey Fantham Sim represented the riding of Matamata (yup, HOBBITON!) in the legislature, and one of Fanny's descendants married into one of the families that created the kiwifruit industry. Every shot in the series of films, both LOTR and The Hobbit, reinforced me connection with the country. Once I arrived in Auckland, I began a love affair with New Zealand that has not diminished in the slightest. The people are incredible, the food is extraordinary, and the geography is stunning. Traveling from Hamilton to Wellington was an epic journey in its own right, as the sights around me seemed to morph from one ecosystem to the next, each more beautiful than the last. Even more than 5 years later, I still yearn to return. The only downside to my genealogical research is that I realize I should been born in New Zealand!. I know Christmas is weeks away still, but I want to wish everyone in New Zealand a very Merry Christmas and a most prosperous New Year. Perhaps next Christmas I can experience the holidays Kiwi style! Ahhhh . . . to dream!

@@brianhogg9857 One of Geoffrey Fantham /sim's daughters wrote a book about her father. Apparently he was a bona fide war hero as well as a politician. I have not been able to confirm if the book was ever published, but if it was I would love to read it. I am a veteran myself, and my father was a career soldier. Military service that is particularly noteworthy is always of interest to me. A kinsman in the same lineage was Neville Gilbert McWilliam, the Christchurch NZ-born first blind barrister in Australia. The NZ National Archives carries a newspaper article about how Neville managed to sit for and pass his pre-law exam in Geometry (IIRC). I am not sure when law books first became available in braille, but it must have been challenging to attend law school in the early 1900s as a blind student. Neville was admitted to the bar in 1906 0r 1907. New Zealand certainly was good to my kin!

I occasionally think about this contest and how much hope a lot of us held for being one of the lucky winners. I'm happy for all those who got to live their amazing dream. And I hope all those, who hopes where unfulfilled, that one day we can make it to the land of our dreams .

My daughter is a huge Hobbit Fan. She designed her own Hobbit Dream House, which she wants to live in. I hope she gets to go to New Zealand as it's a beautiful Country. I dated a New Zealander for 8 years. I was so lucky to see the County. Wales (UK) has similar beaches.

I'm not sure if I could have handled that, definitely not bungy jumping due to some stupid existing medical condition that may actually kill me, but we all gotta die, life insurance still says no, trolls to them. Visiting this place is definitely on my bucket list & as i live in Australia it's practically next door, writing this in 2021, I've heard that a lot of the hobbit houses that were basically just a shell, that's why everyone was just hovering in the door, are now dug out & you can really enter them. Thank you for making this, kudos to Air New Zealand & the people of New Zealand for keeping this dream alive, it is a very precious thing you all have done. ( sorry ).

There needs to be more of these special trips here to NZ because people really are missing out. They should make the trips more detailed, like if Air NZ organised a very special trip to NZ and picked a bunch of lucky USA celebrities to join the trip, and they start by going to Invercargill for like a week, they went to all spent one day going to all sorts of places including Queens Park and the Southland Museum where they saw the tuatara reptiles, possibly even getting lucky to watch the curator Lindsey Hazley feeding them. Then they went to Milford Sound by bus, including going through Homer Tunnel, then Queens Town, then Nelson, and then they went to the North Island to do all that stuff there and then they have to get onto their planes to go back home
