    My hat's off to whatever genius thought of making the body-shields go blue for a block/deflection and red during a killshot: It let the choreography of the knife/sword fights go as fast as possible, but the audience had a very clear, almost a Kurosawa death-pause level of understanding of who just got kilt, and who was still mobile. This is badass, straight up. One thing the movie did a great job in conveying was that loyalty and comradery among the Atreides, so well that the viewer feels for the fallen House Atreides and curses the treacherous dogs that call themselves Harkonnen. Even more betrayal is felt seeing the Sardaukar also mercilessly on the hunt to eliminate this noble house of the Landsraad. It was with his instruction that House Atredes were able to train an army that rivaled the Sardaukar who were brutally trained to be killers. So when Paul started training the Fremen who lives in an environment that made them equally brutal, they surpassed even the Sardaukar in ability.

    you'd think the Emperor in the Dune Universe would be scared of Baron Harkonnen, judging by how scary, powerful and wealthy and sneaky they are but he's actually jealous and scared of Atreides
    probably the reason for that is how reasonable, trust worthy and dependable House Atreides is and that makes them very popular among the other houses and therefore most of those houses would prefer Duke Leto to be the Emperor.

      even baron harkonen is afraid of the emperor. everyone is afraid of the emperor.
      baron and duke know they were on the chopping block.
      harkonen outnumbered the atreides but still needed the sardukar help. so harkonen are not that powerful?.

    • @vomErsten
      @vomErsten 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      The Emperor saw in Atreides a powerful breed of charisma and competence that would allow the Duke to inevitably unseat his house on the throne should he harbor such ambitions. Other houses may be jealous, but none commanded the loyalty of so many high-quality assets as Atreides and would've eventually been brought to heel under Atreides if the time came. The Emperor did not understand that the Atreides charisma comes from the lack of political ambition combined with a strong desire to do the right thing. He can't trust that, it's not how he thinks. The Harkonnen, on the other hand, can be trusted to lie, deceive, cheat, and steal; after getting rid of Atreides they are a lot easier to manipulate and deal with.

      @@KalashVodka175 Atreides had the best trained troops among the Houses but still the Sardaukar were leagues ahead. Leto and his stuff hoped they could enlist Fremen and train with them to reach Sardaukar levels. He expected to be betrayed at some point but the attack came way sooner than he expected. In the book Atriedes make a small raid against the Harkonen and Tufir estimates that the Harkonen don't have the money to transport enough men to beat them until they are ready. Still the Harkonen get a loan and also Sardaukar join them, the latter being a force multiplier that Tufir didn't expect as it was illegal for the Emperor to interfere in war between Houses. Each Sardaukar is like 5-10 House soldiers so the invasion force was way stronger and arrived sooner than expected. The Harkonen additionally used artilery in the book, which is forbidden by the customs of war in Dune. As for money to transport such a large force, they Harkonen got in a huge debt to claim such a decisive victory. That's how the Emperor lured them. Now the Harkonen will try to export spice like crazy but they can't since they need a lot too, they don't have the equipment nor the support of the Fremen. This will turn the rest of the Houses against them. So, no Atriedes and the Harkonen in a bad situation, in need of imperial help. Just as the Emperor wants. But Paul will ruin these plans.

    Since "progress" and materialism have killed them in our actual society, at least the virtues of Bravery, Honor, Nobility, Duty, and Sacrifice live on in our stories.

    • @davidwuhrer6704
      @davidwuhrer6704 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nobility is not a virtue, it is a heritage. Ask the Bourbons and the Romanovs and the Qings.
      Sacrifice is not a virtue either, it is at best a necessity, otherwise pointless or even harmful.
      Duty is not a virtue either. It is a requirement, and almost always an imposed one.
      Honour is not exactly a virtue, it is rather a duty of nobility. It has killed thousands and not saved a single one.
      Which leaves bravery. That may be a virtue, but it is usually indistinguishable from suicidal recklessness.
      Dune takes place on the far future, at a time when feudalism (and all the violent oppression that implies) has made a huge comeback. Money is just barely a factor in the economy, it is all about military strength, and the imperial Sardaukar are the most fanatical soldiers of them all, and the most feared, securing the supremacy of Corrino. Except that Atreides is proving to surpass even the emperor in pure military strength, which is why house Atreides is wiped out in a betrayal.
      However, the Fremen of Arrakis are far, far more fanatical once their messiah appears, and in their conquest kill more people than anyone in history. Paul Atreides compares himself to Hitler when he notices that he has long surpassed him in every way. And then his own son and heir calls him a coward.
      But it is all very impressive, isn't it? Don't you just want to give your life for his cause?
      Frank Herbert, the author of Dune, said that once people are ready to die for someone like they were for Hitler, their cause will persist throughout history. And that is *not a good thing!* That was the point of the books.

    • @ForseePilot
      @ForseePilot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidwuhrer6704 I don't usually reply to responses on my comments, but since you put so much time into responding and were polite about it...
      Don't worry, I'm aware of what Herbert was trying to convey through Dune. I was just voicing a thought inspired purely by the musical score, though I suppose I didn't clarify that.
      But I will agree with you that people throughout history ALWAYS distort ideals, leaving devastation in their wake. That cycle is something Dune captures very well, and it's why I don't place my faith in humanity.
      As to what I named as virtues, it seems we have rather differing definitions/worldviews concerning these words.
      Anyway, um, I hope this finds you well. This is a TH-cam comment section, so I can only thank you for not being rude.

    • @davidwuhrer6704
      @davidwuhrer6704 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the whole point, charismatic leaders with good intentions are just human beings after all, and can end up screwing up everything big time.

      I don't think 60 Billion lives is half of the universe though... It's more like, a penny of the universe.
      Still fucking bad though. Can't wait for people's reaction when he does that lmao m

    I would almost feel sorry for any Saradukar that encounters Gurney,you had to be Paul level not to be immediately killed by him in any fight.

      Don't forget, that even just on his own with no aid Idaho kills 19 Sardukar in the final defense of Paul alone. No way to know how many he killed during his own escape prior.

      @@Deepingmind Yeah, I was so happy to see Duncan get his big fight. His death in both Lynch's version and the miniseries were terrible. These versions of Gurney and Duncan really make you believe that they are two of the most skilled fighters in the galaxy. Enough that they are known by name among the Harkonnen
