Thank you, Christian and Andy; your video was an exercise in top-of-the-line vintage gear, streamlined workflow, and tech mania. Over the years, I've gone from Digital Performer to Logic (before it was logical - pre-Apple) and have landed using Protools for the past X years. Knowing that Cuebase has the depth needed for heavy lifting, I still can't bring myself to sit down and learn it. All this stands small compared to what I saw in the two of you, and that was the humble strength and love for creating you both have-well Done!
take a 30 day demo and have a good , if you have the time or a project your not up against it .. Have to say I'm still blown away daily by the power of Cubase
Great interview! thanks for showing the un-edited version as well, I quite like all the extra bits and don't mind any rough edges. Please include more of these in the future!
I started on Cubase 3.1 about 25 years ago, then had Logic Gold on PC. Hmmm, got back into sound design & composing in 2020 via the free trial of Cubase Elements 10 onto Artist, then Pro11 and never looked back! Just upgraded to rock solid Cubase 13pro. Nothing I’ve used has come close to this amazing DAW. So user focussed and is an absolute beast in many ways!
Wow! So glad it all ended up okay! I procrastinated on watching this because I was traumatized by hearing his story on that SFA stream you all did, but seems like he risen from the ashes... :)
Wow, what a story. I am happy that he had the strength to continue after this catastrphe! Thank you for the educational video! (Also it was very interesting to watch the Cubase vs Logic part.)
I can't even tell you how excited I am to see this studio tour. I've been a big fan of Andy's work for decades and the tour of his last studio was my favorite of the other series. Thank you for this.
Sorry this happened to your studio! In October 2006 one morning I got a call from the singer of the band I was in at the time asking "Did you have any gear in the studio? because it's burned up." The rehearsal building we were in burned down due to a carpet factory next door going up in flames. We were lucky because we were on the ground floor and only had smoke and water damage from the fire fighters blasting hoses into the small window we had in the room. Only one amp didn't make it and that was solely because it was turned on before it hadn't dried out. All the other musicians in the building were affected. Most lost everything. It was horrible. One of them said how he lost his masters and his back ups. and that, has always made me think to keep them in separate places from then on!
@@AndyGrayedout what are the Cubase Macro buttons being displayed on? Looks like some kind of small touchscreen LED display. Your “anything playable at anytime without opening a DAW” is very similar to my setup. I use MOTU interfaces connected with AVB though. Really heartbreaking to see all that vintage gear fried but at least it was only things.
Great to see Andy's new studio. My mate Pete was helping Andy at his furniture business and saw some posts about the fire. Heartbreaking, but wow what a bounce back!! Cheers Christian.
That is not only a super impressive space, but an object lesson on the value of building and designing your own setup and scripts that fit your workflow. It would be nice though if there were a longer edit of this video. It just left me wanting so much more. All the best!
wow….that hit hard as well as truly uplifting…..don’t know if Andy was getting misty eyed, but my heart goes out to him, but super inspired by his attitude ❤ Chris wonderful video, Thank You 👍
Cool video, thanks! The extended version is even better, I love the way you're pretty much just having a chat in a lovely studio, while at the same time we're finding out loads about Andy's workflow and methology. More please!
An Incredible, inspirational documentary; making the point that out of something so destructive and devastating comes a paradigm shift that allows for new and greater creativity. And thank you Christian for bringing your vision and generosity to the community with ‘Crow Hill’. Long may in continue!
god, that was so moving to see him wipe away the tears. you can't imagine the heartbreak of losing everything. so happy to see him forging ahead and what a lovely space he has there now.
Unbelievable resilience there. I've watched the first Creative Cribs a number of times over the past few years and it must have been heartbreaking. Nice to see he's got the mic's, he's doing good and got another Xpander.
Fantastic setup, I'm so glad that he managed to rebuild and no one got hurt in that fire. As a Cubase user what are the apps he is using on the iPads, I'm very intrigued..
A beautiful space, light and airy. Andy's xpander looks like it's in mint condition. Beautiful sounds and remarkably easy to program. It had quite snappy envelopes, so maybe it's one of the later ones that Gibson built when they acquired oberheim. The ones I've used were great for pads and complex modular drones, as they had less snappy envelopes. It's 6 part multi timbral, 6 voice (with 6 outputs), with c/v & gate AND MIDI . Basically They're half a matrix 12 sans keyboard. Thank you for uploading 👍
I remember, Phil Oaky , telling me that my matrix 12 wasn't as hard edged, sounding as an expander. I listen to him, and that's when I switched from a 12 to an expander, never look back.
Ever since Ive gone RME, I've never turned back.... and I literally just bought the Mic 12 Dante. Absolutely rock solid drivers, amazing build quality and the total mix is the best accompanying software out there.
Lovely new studio setup...anyone know what the ipad software is Andys using for macros/keycommands etc...Im using a version of this ive programmed with OSC Pilot but love the look of whatever it is Andys using there. Cheers.
Wow! What a space! And oh, it's so satisfying to see a composer discovering Cubase again! Been using it for 20 years, and I'm still discovering some crazy helpful things!
Would probably work on an M1 MacBook Pro as well with the RME interface. I’ve not had a single crash or glitch even running 32 samples at 0.5-4ms tracking when aggregated with an ES9 in Eurorack. He mentioned the RME mixer software which is amazing, especially with the ARC controller I noticed on his desk. It can route anything to anywhere. Not cheap but will last 20 years with excellent driver support.
I loved this video but it did make me feel a bit minimalist. Im a pro, making music and sound for TV and Film, day in - day out... I use a half size USB midi keyboard and a 2015 iMac. At least I don't have to worry about fires.
The worst nightmare happened. Glad he's made the best of it and somehow taken it in his stride. Going back some years I had all my gear in a studio building and the roof was ripped off in a heavy storm, but nothing inside was damaged amazingly. That was scary enough and I lost nothing. I can't imagine looking at flames and knowing what that means. Also, ace to see Andy on Cubase. It's a monster.
Those cases were air tight so the fire had no fuel to burn. Similar to what happened with the Malibu studio you visited. I am going to invest in some air tight cases for drives now.
first of all that fire story was just insane!! So happy that Andy mentally and spiritually recovered and that the mics survived!! I'd love to know more about synching Pro-Tools to Cubase and how to get that set up. I'm starting to get into a position where pro-tools is just a must for the mixing and delievery but I'm stumped on how to get that synched with Cubase!
Incredible to see Andy's new studio. As a Cubase user myself, I absolutely loved seeing his enthusiasm using it & i even learned some new tricks. If anybody knows how i can setup the programming in Cubase similar to Andy, please let me know!

awesome video indeed, and how cool I have the same set up (less all the synths of course and mics,) so its great to know the real super guys are doing the same :) inspiration to try even harder lol
Really impressive rebuild with a lot of smart working decisions. I find the bit about missing EXS24 curious. I'd use Logic myself as a preferred sequencer but for the lack of a comprehensive sampler, that is, EXS24/Logic Sampler can only apply Filters and LFOs to the entire program, not on a sample or zone level. When they updated EXS24 into the newer Sampler I was most surprised to see they still had this limitation. If you use Kontakt, Falcon, MPC or Ableton's sampler, moving to Logic's built in Sampler presents you with a huge sound design limitation in that sense. It's funny how in 2024 we still have tools with peculiar limitations, for example the MPC hardware/software cannot use a free-running LFO so basically every LFO you use is retriggering with every key or pad press. Note to Akai - that's called an envelope where I come from 🤦♂
What a great looking studio. Does anybody know what large computer monitor he's using (the very long one, just in front of him)? Is it a Samsung Neo G9? We've sure come a long way in screen size since the original Macintosh 128k. ;)
Please excuse my prior silly remarks. Andy. I thought you were just a guy with gear, not necessarily a pro movie soundtrack man. I almost cry when I saw this man wiping his tears. I´m glad he left the fire behind and now have a wonderful studio. Love from Argentina.
Awesome video!! And wow, that bit about the Halion Sampler feature ... I'd never used it like that. I've definitely gotta get up to speed with that
Ditto, thanks so much Andy for englighting us on features for Cubase that I'd never seen demonstrated so simply before.

As Cubase user - I just took a huge step forward. I did not know any of this, after being on Cubase since an Atari 520 in black and white!

Every musician's (perhaps person's too) worst nightmare, but I love Andy's new studio.
It’s quite admirable that he’s been able to recover from such a nightmare.
he'd done 2 smart things, good insurance coverage and didn't go wild on repurchasing all that was lost
He simply moved on :
