17:00 regarding the interactions of the exploding rhino vs the barriers, it DOES affect the barrier from inside if the rhino is within blast radius of the edge of the shield
the turn in question was a beacon movement to pull the rhinos away from the mustangs on its left and into the tower. that overlord setup from the red player is an aggressive one where they use it for overload boats. the actually dumb answer would have been an elite recruited wraith with armor to block out 120 damage of the rank 1 wasps.
There's nothing as delightful as see a herd of rhinos charging across the Mechabellum map! I'm still not 100% convinced by the self destruct tech. Once you've got it, it feels like any additional tech upgrades are almost a waste if you've got your own rhinos destroying other rhinos through exploding.
Whirlwind let you get through chaff so they can explode on high value targets. Photon Coating/Armor let them live longer and not get EMPed Armor also increases explosion damage since it's based off of Rhino's HP.
@@zchen27 and a doubleshot acid scorpion lets them explode..so maybe before round 5 it may have some value...after it and 3 or more rhinos are different.
The meta way to run rhino's for a while is techs to get them in (photon, whirlwind and power armour) plus final blitz. Since the damage they do is equal to their max hp they also won't oneshot each other while photon coating is up. I should add the point of the loadout isn't solely for final blitz, just getting them where they're needed and letting them hit is also often fine.
With Photon + Suicide rhinos of the same level wont kill each other when they blow up, unless they're already on low health This means 2 level 1 Rhinos walk in, 1 gets focused and blows up, and the other is still at 1/2hp due to photon :)

a barrier to protect the front line rhinos would help quite a bit against the missile in rounds 7 and 8
