Hope everyone had a great few weeks over the holidays! Just got back after a 21 hour travel day getting stuck in the middle of that FAA debacle on Wednesday. Had to make one change to the load out but otherwise everything was great! A few post-trip notes:
• I changed out the TP3 for the Carl Friedrik Carry-On, my family had told me I’d have Christmas gifts to bring home so I needed to have extra space for the trip back.Not quite as convenient as a single backpack but the CF carry on is always great to use when I need the extra space.
• Packed and worn clothing worked great! Stayed plenty warm in the low 30’s (OºC) and had plenty of variety. Probably could have left one of the T-Shirts behind but not bad all things considered.
• Toiletries and tech were both great, not much to report. Loved using the AER Travel kit finally.
• Completely forgot to mention in the video - I brought my EDC sling with me as well! Always nice to have as a plane bag as well as an EDC while traveling.
• The boots worked perfectly! So happy I didn’t bring sneakers, I would have ruined them in the wet weather and salt. Plenty comfortable on the plane and throughout the week, they wear like sneakers and worked as well as I hoped.

Through experimenting with many different Dopp kits I found that the Aer slim pouch makes a great lightweight minimalist Dopp kit. Great for backpack travel.
AER Pouches are great! The dopp kit and split kit are also really solid
I think it makes sense to bring just three of almost anything that can be washed easily and conveniently. I mean, even if you have a bunch of them, be it socks or underwear or a tshirt, you’re still using what has been washed/cleaned before. It’s just a matter of having the facilities, time, and willingness to wash them before they are needed for the next wear. Even two would do, but three is best; in case you miss a wash-day for whatever reason, you’ll still have clean clothes. The important part is that they are easy to wash (so maybe not the strategy of choice for something as big as a shirt) and, preferably, easy to dry. Also helps if the material isn’t picky -dry cleaning everyday isn’t a convenient route and special equipment or soaps can be a hassle (but each to their own).
Definitely a good strategy! I’ll often use a ‘wear one, pack two’ type of strategy for socks and underwear, but I typically don’t bring a lot of backups for larger regular clothing pieces.
Hard to do if you're staying in a hostel. So awkward to hang dry your underwear on the bunk bed you're sharing with a stranger. 😂

Great Video Again Josh!! Darn Tough & ExOfficio’s are my “Go To” undergarment items. Can’t go wrong with them. I’ve used the Aer Dopp Kit too. It’s Great. I also picked up their Split Kit which is awesome for really short excursions. But ended up getting (and LOVING) the Peak Design Small Wash Pouch which gives me a little more room than the Split Kit but not as big as the Aer Dopp Kit. It’s just the right size for nearly all trips.
Can’t beat the DT/Exoffocio combo for travel! I have some cotton tommy John underwear I really like wearing at home but the fabric isn’t the best for travel or camping.
I’ve used the split kit on a few trips, such a handy pouch! I think it was my last trip before this I used it as a little tech pouch, really versatile and convenient. Making a note of that peak design pouch as well, thanks for the rec!
@@joshfenn Just keep in mind that Peak Designs has two Wash Pouches. The regular one is as big as their Tech Pouch. The Small Wash pouch is a bit ... well... smaller obviously. But more minimal with a hook (a preferred feature of mine for dopp kits). All the best from Happy Valley!!

Just a friendly FYI from my best friend who's a TSA officer: a non-metal belt doesn't actually mean anything for security if you have to go through the scanner (metal detector, yes, but not the scanner) - those machines are programmed to detect difference in density, not just metal, which is why things like sequins and metallic thread - which are usually plastic - wig them out real bad, and why you aren't allowed to have anything in your pockets when going through it: even drawstrings or dense hairstyles (e.g. braids if they're thick enough) can set it off. I've seen a lot of people on various channels (both posters and viewers) talking about how they can wear metal-free belts through the scanners (at least in the U.S.) without issues precisely because they're metal-free, so I wanted to clear that up: plastic is still much denser than fabric, so there's still a high chance that it will flag it.
About the kindle battery thing, if it's a 2013, Battery Ship sells replacement ones for $23 (currently on backorder, but they're getting more in next month) - I've had really great experience with them, and the shipping is really fast (they also carry batteries for other Paperwhite models as well). I have the Kindle Keyboard 3, and will probably need to get a new battery for both of them (I have 2 - 1 wifi, 1 wifi/3G), and will definitely be ordering from Battery Ship because I was highly impressed with the other batteries I've gotten from them (which have all been way better than the original batteries that came brand new in the devices), as well as the fast shipping times.

Hello from Detroit! It's been unseasonably warm here, so you'll have 30 to 40-degree weather. I recommend a lightweight hat and gloves if you'll be outside at night. Hope you have a good trip!
Actually just got back from the trip, it was great! Have some trip notes in another comment too. Weather held up really well while I was there! It was originally showing 20’s in the forecast but just barely dipped below freezing over the week. Ended up being okay with my jacket hood and pockets instead of gloves, but didn’t spend too much time outdoors or I probably would have packed both like you mentioned. It was so great being back in Detroit finally, I love Oregon but it’ll always be home for me.

That’s a tough call! I have and enjoy using both, but I think the exofficio handles sink/travel washing a bit easier since they dry so quickly. The merino on the other hand can be reworn without washing and still doesn’t smell or cause issues. I think it’d come down to preference and how you tend to travel. Probably wouldn’t go wrong with either choice!

I think the closest to the alien one is the darker matte gray, but basically the same one! Such a cool look, the stainless version really shines with the cases jewel type of shape around the edges.

Okay, I’ve got to ask - please tell me about sink washing. How does it work, what do you use to wash? This could be a game changer!
Nothing too complicated in my experience! Usually you just suds everything up and agitate around with your hands for a minute, then rinse and air dry and/or wring out with a towel.
Synthetics will typically dry pretty fast so it usually works well. I have a small travel towel I bring if I need it that I’ve shared in the past but most locations in the states in my experience have towels where you’re staying.
For soap you can just use hand soap in a pinch, but if I know for sure I will be doing a lot of sink laundry they make laundry strips that are convenient. I also just got an abbrasive dry bag called the scrubba for travel laundry but haven’t tested it yet, I’ll definitely report back once I do.
Let me know if you need/want links for anything, as I’m typing all of this I’m realizing it would probably make for a good video sometime. Hope this helps!

Hand soap in a pinch, but I really like using the laundry soap strips if I know I’ll be doing more washes while I’m out
Does the Aer Travel Pack 3 small fit under an airline seat? Is it personal item friendly?
It’s snug but it’ll fit in my experience. I think as long as it’s not overpacked you should raise any eyes traveling in America with it as a personal item but YMMV, especially if you do any traveling in Asia where the size requirements are more strict.
In general, how does xpac fabric compare to cordura ?
Functionally they’re pretty similar for regular use. Xpac is generally a bit thinner with similar strength and typically more water resistant. Water resistance between the two has been similar for me though, both are great.

Detroit is a great place! Some suggestions for Michigan winter weather is to consider is swapping out one of the t-shirts for some merino 185+ long underwear. Also maybe consider a merino 250+ neck gator, merino 250+ hat and fleece gloves.
All really good tips! I’ve spent most of my life in Michigan and definitely know how brutal the winters can be at times. I actually have all of these for my hiking/backpacking trips and debated bringing them but I knew I wouldn’t be outside for any extended time and decided to skip. Luckily the weather held up well while I was in town and the packing list worked out.

underwear situtation is good as long as you dont get ill or something unexpected happens, an accident of some sort, either connected to alcohol or illness or too spicy food or even something less bad like an unexpected excercise, or hike or a hot apartment that makes you sweat. so I wouldn't take that risk with something so small and lightweight like underwear. I will always opt to bring extra underwear instead of extra sweater. But of course that's just my opinion. I imagine myself in the worst possible scenario with the things I had decided to bring, and quite quickly realize that an extra button up that I might wear to a dinner isn't really worth it, while a first aid kit, pills, flashlight, water filter, extra pair of dry socks, a small packable drybag and things like that would be much more necesarry. would I be able to stand and wash my underwear in the sink if I am ill? Probably not, so I rather bring extra.
I definitely appreciate the sentiment here, everyone’s needs and preferences will be a bit different. Still having 3 pair of underwear should save me from any emergencies in general, but I always like to keep in mind where I’m traveling. Most places you can always pick something up on location if needed, or for this trip I knew I’d be spending time at my mom’s house so I could always do a full load of laundry if needed. Great things to keep in mind though, these are all things I hold to for more remote/backcountry type of trips. Thanks for sharing!
@@joshfenn agreed, I wouldn't worry too much if I was visiting my mom as well (or a close friend), but any other situation I would, even if it is not especially remote. Then again, to be fair I usually only travel for work, and since I work on film sets my working hours are so crazy that I am lucky to have energy or time to eat a sandwich when I get to my hotel after a 14 hour work day of standing in mud or scorching sun. washing clothes has to be done on free days and those happen only every 5 or six days... so I have to plan for longer stretches in between sink washes. But I will absolutely have to look into merino wool Tshirts that you talk about so often as they would help me a lot. Great video and thanks for the advice :)
