Nikon En-eL15 Battery: Real Vs. Fake

  • In this video I made a side-by-side comparison between a genuine Nikon En-eL15 battery and a very good counterfeit. I received this counterfeit item from Adorama, February 2019, that was being sold as a genuine Nikon product. It was extremely disappointing as Adorama is supposed to be an authorized dealer of genuine Nikon merchandise.
    CORRECTIONS:
1:48 The REAL batteries will come in a box WITH a white bottom, I stated that the fakes would have a white bottom.

    Addendums:
The hologram sticker on the box should turn green as well like on the battery when viewed from a shallow angle.
Others have also mentioned a “tap test”. Apparently fake and 3rd party batteries sound hollower or don’t sound as solid/dense as the real batteries. In my testing the batteries sound identical.

I would like to add some small piece of information on that. One of my friends bought a cheap EN-EL15, which is discontinued by Nikon, so i guess the manufacture date is not supposed to be 2019 or 2018, but anyway, what i paid attention to, is that the running serial number after the manufacture date here in the video and on my friend's battery is the same - TA6226, and that is for me a very suspicious detail telling that the battery is fake for sure.

Your video has helped me a lot to verify the originality of several ENEL-15 batteries I have.
Thank you very much for the time you took to make it.

I just bought a enel15b battery from kenmorecamera in Washington state, supposedly an authorized Nikon dealer. Great video, now I know what to look for.

I too have had problems with counterfeit EN-EL15 and EN-EL15a batteries.
This video is excellent with the EN-EL15 battery however I would like to add that there are a couple of other tell-tale signs that I have identified. On the counterfeit EN-EL15 the recycle symbol of the three clockwise arrows is off-centre with the bottom arrowhead touching the edge of the label. Also the serial no. on the counterfeit, apart from being after production ceased, is tabbed to the left of the 'Li-ion 20' whereas on the genuine it is tabbed to the right. Also on the counterfeit there is hardly any gap between the '0' and the 'V' on the top line of the label where it says '7.0V' whereas on the genuine article the characters are correctly spaced. On later counterfeits the weights are the same at ~78g.
On the EN-EL15a battery the weight and labels are identical. The counterfeit can be identified by the terminal (connector) issues as identified in this excellent video. I have also found that the imprinted lettering of 'Nikon Lithium Ion Battery Pack' on the reverse of the battery and the '+' and '-' above the terminals are of poor quality on the counterfeit but well defined on the genuine article.
Thank you Andres for a very helpful video.

Thanks for the info, I discovered my EN-EL15 is a fake, I was wondering why the battery performance is very weak like 50-100 shots max after shutting everything down, I inspected it after watching your video and found the same exact difference from the original only mine dated 2017

I don't have experiences on fake battery, but I bought one which is 3rd party en-EL15, claims 2800mAh capacity, with discharge test, it has only 580mAh. which is worse than my 5 year old dead Li-on battery.

    Adorama selling counterfeit!!!
That's terrible news if true. Why don't you take this back to them or better still, sue them.

I bought a pair of fakes. The biggest sign is the weight difference. Cheaper batteries will use inferior components to create the battery chemistry. Most fakes work well at the beginning and then after the 10th or 15th charge it will have significantly less capacity.

Thank you for this video. What is everyone's experience using third party EN EL15 batteres--Vivitar 2500mAh, Watson (B & H brand), Waasabi. etc?

Wow, it is almost impossible to tell the fakes from the reals. I'm wondering if weight would be the best way to tell. The Real batteries would all weigh the exact same.
