I like to have the nightstands higher than the bed. It's a lot harder to accidently knock things off (such as from that pillow that just won't stay put). I also prefer the way it looks.

Yes, Nina! I went through that phase of too many pillows. What a pain: the nightly ritual of removing all those little useless pieces. The morning ritual of setting them all in place again. We had all lost our collective minds and forgotten that form should follow function. Our homes should be authentic.

Great tips/reminders, Nina. Thanks! Can I just say that I love the "faux pas" pics you chose - those gave me some hilarious comic relief. :-)

I love your very insightful tips. I went looking throughout my bedroom and can confirm I am applying most of them already. This makes me feel good, knowing I’ve absorbed and integrated good design principles into my decorating style.

We can't get away from the door we are faced coffin style with the door in front of us and a sliding glass door on the other entire wall. We have a small apartment bedroom

I wish all architects learned feng shui principles. Many times there is only one place for the bed, and it is not ideal, even in a large house where it could have been ideal but is not.

I never understood the bed-against-the-wall “design.” Even in these tiny, micro places I have lived in in NYC and DC, I have NEVER placed my bed against a wall. How do you make your bed and put on sheets when it is against the wall? It makes no sense. Worse case scenario is to opt for a smaller bed rather than placing it against a wall. My house 5 years ago had such a small bedroom that all we could squeeze in was a double bed and 1930s dresser. It wasn’t ideal but we dealt with it and survived.

my “bed” is a queen anne fainting couch, and with an asymmetrical design and upholstered back you do sort of have to put them either in a corner or floating not just on a wall but in the center of the room. very cozy, but the mattress pops right out to be easy to make!
