The original series and the White Base team are really strange when you put it in realistic military terms. They are a civilian militia fleshed out with a few ROTC-type cadet officers, armed with the most cutting edge weaponry available, and tossed into (& emerging victorious) against enemy forces again and again until their very appearance on the battlefield becomes a nightmare for the opposing side. Imagine a movie about a bunch of Civil Air Patrol weekend kids lucking into experimental stealth fighters and RUNNING an carrier in the middle of WW3, then slowly turning into Maverick by the end of the movie. That's about the right vibe for Gundam.
Except Amuro did grow up with as engineering genius or prodigy and Bright was indeed assigned to sail in that super weapon fleet. Your analogy about weekend kids lucking into experimental weapon is not equivalent with the plot details
@@scylla4342 Perhaps I used some hyperbole, but with the exception of Bright (who WAS a green ROTC/OCS type), they were all civilians, and hence militia of a type once armed...and militia do not normally get equipped with the most advanced weapons a military has. 7:06 this ties back into the WWII inspiration that the Universal Century timeline gradually came to adopt: Zeon's insistence on specialized prototypes and their maintenance issues echos that of German tank and airplane development in WWII that saw many machines produced that, while impressive from a technical standpoint, could never be built in enough numbers to be a strategic factor, such as the Tiger Tank or the Me-262 Jet Fighter. This meant that Germany had to rely on the 1930's-vintage Panzer IV tank and Bf-109 fighter plane until the end of the war, adapting these chassis to their very limit and fielding increasingly desperate designs that used them as a basis, much like the Zaku 1's being deploy as late as A Baoa Qu as there simply weren't enough "new" suits to go around. Meanwhile, the GM can be compared to the US Sherman Tank, a mid-range design with a good gun that, while maybe not any great shakes unit-for-unit compared to German tanks, could be built in large numbers, was easily adapted and upgraded (including to the "Easy 8" model made famous as "Fury") and was easy to repair or replace if it were damaged.
Just wanted to say I just binged all 4 parts of this and it was amazing. Watched the major series of the one year war years ago and your review was great.
It's funny that you mentioned how Zeon made a bunch of specialized mobile suits that went nowhere. Zeon realized this and tried to fix their problem by introducing the United Maintenance Plan. The plan was to use standardized parts to upgrade their frontline machines, i.e., turning the Zaku II into the Zaku Kai, the Rick Dom into the Rick Dom II, the Gouf into the Gouf Custom, etc. But by then, it was already too late, and the Zeeks were already back in space.
Something everyone seems to ignore from the one year war that are far more important then people seem to realize: Everyone in universe and in real life use half of humanity as the casualties for both the opening month of the war and the war as a whole, meaning the last 11 months of the war was only a rounding error compared to the losses taken from Operation British and the retaliatory strikes on Zeon colonies for it.
@@DIEGhostfish Given the Antarctic Treaty had the Federation agree to not strike colonies directly in exchange for no more colony drops, I think it's safe to say that the setting assumes that the Federation did destroy some of the colonies of Side 3 in retaliation for the gas attacks and Operation British.
34:00 Sorry but I have to agree with Ramba. Amuro has a machine that is literally impervious to his enemy’s weapons and yet pilots like Ramba and Char have been fighting him to a draw. Not saying Amuro isn’t talented but at this point in the series it’s more the gundam keeping him alive long enough for him to pull something off than it is his skill winning the day
GM is why I loved UC timeline cuz it showed us the fundamental difference in tactical thinking between EFSF and Zeon during the OYW. While Zeon MS carries weapons that are capable of killing capital ships for their role, EFSF uses the GM specifically for Anit-MS actions only (Leaving the heavier enemy for the battleships to deal with), thus the standard GM isn't required to carry heavier weapons, and can be produced at minimal cost, giving the EFSF the ability to outnumber Zeon MS numbers by 10:1 by the end of the war. Edit: I thought it was pretty clear that Ramba Ral in Origin is a Zeon loyalist
Origins covered the plot holes of the original series that Tomino made after Yasuhiko was hospitalized during the production of the original 1979 version. Plus Ramba wasn't a zabi loyalist as in both the manga and ova he refused to partake in Operation British of installing the poison gas that it got him demoted. Also Ramba was smart enough to not be like his father in using the Deikun kids as political pawns under the Federation to start a coup as both the Kycillia and Gihren organizations are spying on them in exile. Both the Original 1979 and origins version had Ramba Ral trying to score points with the Zabis for the sake of his wife and troops having a better status in society. In one Gihren's Greed Scenario, Char taking charge as Casval allow Ramba and his unit to defect.
1:20:09 With all of the New Stuff coming out and all of the New One Year War Side stories I wonder what a Modern Day Gihren's Greed Map would look like... The Germans in ww2 did something similar with tanks, they kept creating developmenting better tanks that required specialty parts and it stretched them thin. So it fits for Zeon.

16:40 i just want to point out that you actually need salt to survive. Modern America has the opposite problem of getting too much salt in the average person's diet but in the ancient world it was such a necessary commodity that the Roman military would include a "salt ration" payment to their soldiers and in some areas (such as the Odessa Salt Mines) would actually pay the soldiers in salt that they could then sell. This is the origin of the expression "any man worth his salt". AND The White Base is travelling through a desert in this part of the story. Deserts are hot, and you sweat a lot. Everyone is seen to be extra fatigued, which is what happens to you when you lose a lot of salt by sweating and only replenish the water in your body but not the salt. It's called hyponatremia. Given I see this channel as a scholar of both Berserk and Gundam: Which is more intolerable and wrong, Griffinth did nothing wrong or Zeon did nothing?
They're both pretty evil, and if you count the machinations of the God Hand, both are genocidal. The difference is that Griffith is way more personal for the reader because of the journey they've been on with Guts throughout Berserk. In Gundam, you're kind of separated from the people at the top of Zeon who gave the orders. So Zeon has the higher body count, but because of how personal Griffiths actions are, he's easier to hate.

I have to disagree with Origin Ral being a Zabi Loyalist. He outright refuses to partake in Operation British despite orders and threats by Dozle because he finds the plan beyond abhorrent. He’s forced off the frontlines for his defiance which is hardly the actions of a Zabi Loyalist. I agree the main continuity Ral is better, but Origin Ral is actually not that bad.

59:37 In other news this was where that SD Gundam Battle Alliance Gatherroad Squadron Framing Device came from.
Huh. I always wondered where they came from.

i just want to point out that you actually need salt to survive.
AND
The White Base is travelling through a desert in this part of the story. Deserts are hot, and you sweat a lot. Everyone is seen to be extra fatigued, which is what happens to you when you lose a lot of salt by sweating and only replenish the water in your body but not the salt. It's called hyponatremia. Look it up.
Also, the little mascot Acguy wearing the shirt should be called Shirtguy. Just saying.
17:26 You could say hes a Gouf-ball.
The clip at 2:57 where is it from?
It's from the Gundam Card Builder 0079's cutscenes. If you see a video on youtube called:
機動戦士ガンダム 0079 カードビルダー センモニムービー集
scroll to the 2-minute mark, you'll find it
45:23 *cough* Gundam Valhalla *cough*
54:44 oh yeah I keep forgetting the original dub for Gundam had the black tristars with a southern accent XD
Where do you get some of the newer anime style footage
Hail Dave Mustaine the American philosopher. 😅
Where are those clips with better animation from?
Would you ever consider Doing a crossover with? It'sagundam
No. He does culture war stuff. I left that sector.
@@BigMicahC his itsagunpla channel is pretty stellar but yeah its unfortunate the whole culture war stuff gets in the way
You know what's creepy concerning the augusta newtype lab? In the real world Augusta Georgia/south carolina there is a medical prison near the military base there, on top of being a big medically oriented college city in general
something of note for M'quve is he is also responsible for many MANY follies of the zeon front on earth. consisting of disrupting the partner machine concept of the gouf and doms being paired. M'quve literally got jealous and wanted the doms for himself and reallocated them to his units. embezzled a ridiculous amount of zeon resources and profits. he more or less literally screwed over his own admiral along with every other front as much as possible... seriously anyone who hasnt read up to what hes done, should its mind boggling what he got away with
I always wondered, Why didn't Run use the Core Fighters weapons?
During operation, Odessa Amoro was supposed to receive the gundam pixie
Aqura gm is good if you ignore they had no ACEs and near 100% casualty rate the aqura guncannon had better showing with one piolt that bailed out. Also the zaon Aquatic units are shown 20 years later still full on par with nemo 2 and 3 and gm 3 suits. Also Zeon had the only dedicated in atmo flying suit the gouf flight type in the Zeon war for Independents.
If you're referencing Unicorn, those were experienced Zeon soldiers fighting trainees in old suits dude. Torrington was a training facility. The instant a competent pilot came out in that Byarlant, Zeon was toasted. Context is king.
@@BigMicahC more the half those experienced soldiers where second or third generation remints people born and raised labeled evil by the most corrupt and twisted government seance AD1940s. witch also on the record used g3 gas on two colonies for protesting before the federation framed the zobies for Diacums murder
@BigMicahC the Ballentine witch was a zeon design suit and half the pilots where the children of one year war soilder like the bitch in the mobile armor but no even in the Zeon war for independence the zeon had advantage in the water and aqura games git wrecked cause they just fucking suck. Like most gm and balls and well all federation units they where trash if not a gundam and even they had 50% casualty rate. Federation won by human wave with Ms. The Freddy Ace is not even half the score of the top 5 zeon acces.
Given I see this channel as a scholar of both Berserk and Gundam:
Which is more intolerable and wrong, Griffinth did nothing wrong or Zeon did nothing?
They're both pretty evil, and if you count the machinations of the God Hand, both are genocidal. The difference is that Griffith is way more personal for the reader because of the journey they've been on with Guts throughout Berserk. In Gundam, you're kind of separated from the people at the top of Zeon who gave the orders. So Zeon has the higher body count, but because of how personal Griffiths actions are, he's easier to hate.
Quick question: The different side stories look like some are from games. What were they called? I'm gonna see if I can find some playthroughs.
The only major team you didn't mention is the Revenge of idea i hope I spelled that right
Where are these 0079 animations from? (Not the 79 anime ones, i mean the ones that look like 80s/90s ovas)
From various Gundam games throughout the years (Gihren's Greed, Journey to Jaburo, etc)
@@BigMicahC ohh. That explains why they look so good. Thanks!
Do you think the 'red shirts' on the GMs were at all inspired by the Star Trek 'red shirts'?
54:46
Gamera Texas Dub reference?
I would be willing to pay an enormous sum for a plastic kit of the Ground Assault Type Gun tank..
But, to my knowledge they never manufactured one tragically.
This show pulled me into Gundam. I didn't know about either side but I became attached to the wrong side only understanding that they were fascist. I sided with the federation at the end.
I'm just going to leave a hot take here. Even though the designs philosophy makes sense, and im only pointing out the aquatic ms, there are only 2 aqua gm variants vs. most of zeon aquatic ms doesnt do any justice in this video. Stats wise.
381 kph is 236 mph, right?! I'm a bit confused here... 261 mph as you said, is well over 420 kph or near the top speed of a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport at 267. So, which is the top speed of the Dom?!
more please :D
Love your videos, I LOVE GUNDAM....I OWN EVERYBOOK,ART BOOK,APOCRYPHA BOOK,VIDEO GAME , AND ENOUGH GUNPLA TO RE SINK THE TITANIC! Your 4 parter of the 1 yr war is just brilliant! Thank you for this. Liked and subbed btw.😊😊😊
Why have they not remade the Gundam series with "The Origins" art style?
So many goddamn Gms!
Edit: the Aqua Gms aren't very great though. On the other hand, Zeon's amphibious ms are very capable.
God I hope your salt explaination is sarcasm
Decent summary, even with your really cringey commentary
Thanks!
Zeon is also based on the nazis. The nazis kept wasting their money on tons of prototypes.
How the fuck do you have your plan stopped by children!?
ask any parent
A war that lasted for only one year? Come on, that's not too bad...
I’m allowed to enjoy Gundam AND Mia Khalifa, thank you!!!! ☺️
Wait you have a weapon called the "Bop Gun" an you don't make a reference to Parliament...not even once?
Haman-sama is my godess!!!
Was not expecting the whole sayla’s nipples are pink.
Very real to over hear people talk about you behind your back, infront of you.
"When you're losing to a land based mobile suit underwater to a mobile suit that's meant to be great underwater...."
That, my friend, is what we call plot armor. The Gundam ever being outclassed in any possible scenario? Illegal. Straight to jail.
I think you should rewatch origin again because I don’t think you’re remembering it right
On some point they look like "Aldnoah Zero"
Andrew Waltfeld from CE is Ramba Ral done right, not dying and joining the protagonists
Waltfeld sucks.
@BigMicahC I'd say he was a bigger threat to Kira and the Archangel than the Le Creuset team because he knew how to maximize his advantages in terrestrial combat. He came closest to taking out the Strike, which was down to its knife and without phase-shift armor. Plus the BuCUEs and the LaGOWE were some of the best land-based mobile suits of any faction in CE because of how functional and flexible they were. He could have beaten Kira if plot-armor wasn't a factor
He got whupped in the first fight he had with Kira.
ummmm, so you dont care for the Origin continuity? well you revealed that you havent watched it by saying that Ramba Ral is a zabi loyalist, when every episode he is in, he talks about how horrible the zabi;s are
you should put in the actual research so you dont completely and entirely undermine your work, like you did within this video
Amazing video series, have been enjoying them a lot!
But man, you gotta stop with the sexist jokes on women. The show is old and has a lot of sexist things in them, doesn't mean we gotta go back in time with these "Cause she's a woman" jokes.
Anyway, great videos!!
So, respectfully, I'm not gonna stop the jokes because I honestly think Wufei's douchebaggery is funny. What I will say is that my jokes are about a 0% reflection of my feelings on most anything. Glad you're enjoying the videos!
The idea that you could just slap some stuff on a giant robot and that'd actually make it capable of standing up to suits that were purpose built just shows how bad the writing was.
Please for the love of gundarium stop pronouncing it TAWmino. Really enjoying the videos otherwise.
War may be hell, but its mostly business. Its some kinda meta genius that people (including me) gladly spend hundreds on fictional war machines while fully aware of the horrors these tools of war carry out in their setting. Gundam is cool. War aint.
Woah cool robot, war bad
Eating meat is bad goy. Eat ze bugs.
