I think this was one of the most precious episodes of this show.
I wish the sacredness of marriage and family was still this honored.

@@widowrumstrypze9705I don’t know why, but I was so surprised and shocked to hear that Doug had cheated on Kate in the past. I guess even the nice and caring spouses too. I still don’t know if I could continue with my husband and get over the anger. My hats off to all the women that can, as I don’t think they’re stupid as many others may think.

My goodness Kate is such an awesome woman - strong, mature, rational, and I love it when she gets snarky and a bit raunchy. She is so unselfish too - she understands the effect she has on others and she is so careful to say the right things because she knows it's important. She is the true head of that family and the rest of them are so lucky to have her.

I was about a year older than Kristy McNichol and about three or four younger than Gary Frank, but in a way I identified with both characters: Buddy for her kindness and idealism and Willie for being the artsy kid who just didn't quite fit in . That was me. And Buddy was everything I looked for in a girl at that age. Never quite found that girl.

I loved this episode. I don’t remember watching it before...the way Kate explains what a marriage is, was perfection and Doug...the way he conveyed how the best parts of him belonged to his family...these are the reasons that this show holds up. It’s never ‘preachy’. Humans are imperfect, yet given the right circumstances will rise, to be the best version of themselves, possible.

I trusted my husband and I trusted her 100% . I don't believe that prohibiting and or not allowing your partner helps any. But I do know now one must remain aware always. I didn't. Doug felt like he was trapped in a prison all day. That office. For once he got to leave the office in the middle of the work day and go have a hot dog and hang out and joke with a nice person. Problem is the nice person was another woman and that's not right. Sad to say but marriage also resembles a prison in that sense. There's certain things that you just don't do, no matter how innocent you think it is. Marriage is like a prison but you have to look at it as a good prison with more upsides than downsides. If you're not on board with that, then you have no business getting married. Doug had been driven half nuts after carrying on years of this weekly work grind and so maybe he forgot himself. He saw a chance to escape from prison for a few hours and it was near impossible to resist. He was wrong but Kate got a little out of hand, talking to him as if she suspected him of something and for that she apologized. That's why this show was so good, it was often nuanced in that way. There wasn't always a clear cut good guy and bad guy. People did some things that were wrong but it never got to the point where it couldn't be straightened out with a little communication. People forgot themselves or made a mistake now and then but rarely was there any malevolent intent.

Linda Lavin attractive? Hmmm. Additionally, the script writers for this show (and the audience that think it's such a great reflection of family values, respect and love for one another) are sure
skewed. This is the fourth episode where Doug shows his questionable morals/character. First, he had an affair, then he took Willie to a strip club to celebrate Willie's birthday and then he gets drunk in his own house with a younger, female colleague. Whether she was female or not, his getting drunk in his own house while doing "work" and his 15 year old daughter is around, is irresponsible. There's platonic relationships and then there's playing hooky with an obviously (insert word of choice) female at work. Classy Doug, you great father and husband, you!

There was something about this episode that seemed shallow to me, compared to the usual fine quality of other episodes of Family. I would have expected Doug to have seen from the beginning that Annie Laurie was a needy, troubled person. He shouldn't have encouraged her attempts to put their relationship on a personal level, much less on a romantic level. It just seemed out of character for Doug to be tempted by her boldness to any degree. So because I didn't find that part of the story believable, the rest of it struck me as farcical.

Both real mature in the circumstances, I would of acted the same way Kate did probably worse..but it would of made him run to the other woman. Understanding can be so hard most of the times. Anyway glad to see these episodes again because their isn't anything worth a 💩 on tv. these ugly days. 🤷‍♀️

The most Doug would have done with Annie Laurie is flirt with his own youth with his corny polo shirts and piano singing. By the time he played hooky for the day even, Annie Laurie was doing all the flirting, he had already resorted to a cautious kind of standoffish tone. His initial attraction was that she was his "opponent," but then she turned out to just be pathetic and a liar. Nothing like Kate as he originally mused. Even though him disrespecting Kate with his wandering eye was practically as hurtful as cheating there for a minute. Kate kind of overdoing it with the singing pizza bit at the end, unless "Doug" just missed the acting mark not acting equally as "meant to be" of a couple they were supposed to be.

They paint Doug here as a victim and some Nobel guy for doing what Taylor Tomlinson calls “honoring the most basic agreement of our relationship.” That Doug line “I’m middle aged, we’re very vulnerable” was nothing more than an apology for 70s men, avoiding the reality that many adulterers were taking advantage of the sexual revolution they privately derided. I guess there were some good ones like Doug but I think this and many other episodes give horrible acting men a pass.

He did not know he was going to play "hockey" when he left for work. She brought it on herself by reacting like she did and only gave him reason to think about the proposition even more.
