David Wong Not very often the Best Film of the year award as well as other accolades correlate with the results of the Box Office. Some do as an exception.
Of course, just like any business. Movie companies need to be profitable or they simply do not survive.
The rating and reputation of the stars might give an plausible estimate as to how much they 'should' earn per film. But even performances can be very fickle because they are only a part, albeit an important one that could make or break the film. However, if the script sucks, the directing is poor, editing was less than average. All those other factors could easily ruin an outstanding performance by a lead actor.
Also, certain studios and their contracted directors would already had the lists of actors in mind. Their compensations for the most part would be largely done prior to the film. Yes, there were some cases where the last minute drop out due to minute factors of the contract. It is often finding the right dance partners between the studio and the entire crews.
Often those block buster movies are the same boring movie formulas with various themes of Good vs. Evil to draw the brainless crowd looking for actions and the token Computer Generated Graphics. The money made by those movies sometimes got plowed into the smaller artsy films where they would be great artistically and worthy of winning awards, but it will only attract the very few who appreciated their fantastic artistic values which most movie goers would simply ignored.
To be honest, film quality had been largely decline as Hollywood studios are now being bought up by Mainland companies seeking to attract the newest consuming public. However, with the tight control of society in the Mainland. Restrictions are now in place with mainly 'sensitive materials' not deeming Beijing worthy. Hong Kong's once vibrant art scene in the colonial glory days were good as gone. I am just hoping that the rest of the world wouldn't suffering from the same fate.

其實老一輩藝人，發哥 達華哥，呂良偉，梁家仁，劉松仁，五虎，甚至曾江，姜大衛那些是man ，徐少強，鄭少秋，吳岱融，古天樂，黎明年輕時候還真是屬於脂粉味的。即使 湯鎮業，哥哥張國榮，郭富城 黃元申 謝賢 狄龍 等等俊秀之餘一樣可以撐得起男子氣概的角色，吳岱融，古天樂一樣有演技，有氣場，黎明唱歌有感情。。個人真的覺得帥要里里外外，這樣看不膩，如果沒有內涵，其實真的沒有魅力，看鹿晗，吳亦凡 舞台表演，硬照可以接受，看他們演戲真的不好看，譬如爾冬升就是這一類，做幕後還行。。。演戲的話 我比較喜歡看老演員 劉青雲 古天樂 劉德華 任達華 郭富城 吳岱融 湯鎮業 苗僑偉 孫紅雷 張家輝 鄭中基 梁家輝 等等，甚至是林雪 許紹雄 哈哈。

David Wong Unfortunately, that is precisely how most Hong Kongers reacting. "Geez, at least I am making $XYZ K HKD per month. Comparing to others, I guess I am not doing so bad."
Still, slowly but surely. Things begin to go bad but you are still a distance better off. However, with the 'Boiling Frogs' syndrome, which is pretty much how Beijing is dealing with Hong Kong - by slowly turning up the heat.
So over a period. All of the sudden. That distance of the wealth gap will now be gone because the poverty line had moved up dramatically. Now, you lost your jobs and things changed all of the sudden. Your previous generous life-savings took a bad hit.
This might be harsh, but it could happen to anyone. Just look at those sub-prime borrowers getting slaughtered during SARS 2003 period when the bubble burst. It will happen again in the future and it would be even worse than SARS.
Just like Bruce Lee famously said, "Water can flow and water can also crash."
