I find it fascinating that the internet both managed to centralize and decentralize some aspects of art and music. You are likely the most famous music critic in terms of just how many people are aware of you, while simultaneously not being directly attached to the "establishment" of music.

I think a power ranking of “Music Critics” would put Fantano much higher. Like you pointed out, most of these folks are popular because of their connection to culture, but criticism immediately puts you at odds with artists, and creates that distance.

It's sad but the reality is that commercial/mainstream art will always be dominated by kids and teenagers. AK has the biggest audience of them, so naturally his influence in this space is huge. It really is sad because he doesn't promote anything positive, but that provocative toxic nature is exactly what draws these kids in.

I think Fantano is vastly underestimating his ability to put a huge spotlight on underground artists. I would never listen to death grips, clipping, jpegmafia, brockhampton without this channel, so I’m super grateful the music scene has someone like him.

a hip hop band i recently started listening to, rural internet, had one of their albums perform WAY better than their other stuff(despite their stuff being pretty good) largely due to anthony reviewing it and giving it a good review. he should def give underground
