As part of fulfilling the government’s campaign to provide more classrooms in public schools all over the country, two new three-storey school buildings were inaugurated and formally turned over to the Tarlac National High School (TNHS) in Tarlac City led by President Benigno S. Aquino III.
Together with Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro and Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio Singson, President Aquino turned over the actual room keys of the school buildings to TNHS principal Dr. Yolanda Gonzales. She said that the buildings “would be essential in ensuring our students’ quality education as they now have additional classrooms that are ideal for learning.”
The school buildings are located at the main and annex campuses of TNHS and part of the Matuwid na Daan sa Silid-Aralan project of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). Both buildings have 30 classrooms which were built to help decongest the overpopulated school of roughly 10,000 students.
TNHS is a 112-year old school and is the oldest public high school in the country in terms of student population and land area.
Coinciding with the ceremony, President Aquino witnessed the turnover of a mock check amounting to P3 billion by PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Cristino Naguiat, Jr. to DPWH Secretary Singson as additional funding for the construction of more school buildings. This brought PAGCOR’s total funding for its school building program to a staggering P10 billion.
DPWH is the agency that handles the construction of school buildings.
Before ending his speech, President Aquino left a message to the students present during the ceremony. “Mag-aral kayo nang mabuti…Unahin niyo ang pagbubuklat ng aklat bago ang pagbubukas ng Facebook. Tapusin muna ang mga takdang-aralin bago ang raid sa Clash of Clans. Dahil gaya nga ng lagi kong sinasabi, kayo ang magpapatuloy sa lahat ng ito,” he said.
