- Mérida, Emerita Augusta, founded in 25 BC by order of the Emperor Octavian Augustus to serve as a retreat for the veteran soldiers of the V ‘Alaudae’ and X ‘Gemina’ legions, was the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania.
The Roman Theatre of Mérida was built, like the Amphitheatre, on the side of a hill, which reduced the cost of its construction. It had a capacity of about 6,000 spectators, distributed from bottom to top according to their social rank. At the front of the stage there are three openings through which the actors entered the stage. The central one, the valva regia, ends in a lintel on which sits the seated statue of the goddess Ceres.
Behind the stage front is a large porticoed garden enclosed by walls with niches decorated with statues of members of the imperial family. The aula sacra, a small sacred space with an altar table where the figure of the divine Augustus was honoured.
The amphitheatre was erected in the 8th century BC as a stage for popular spectacles such as the gladiatorial games, wild beast hunts, etc. It had a capacity of approximately 15,000-16,000 spectators. In the partially restored editors' tribune, the spectacle was enjoyed by those who paid for it.
The Roman Circus of Merida is one of the best preserved of the Empire, and also one of the largest. The seating capacity was for about 30,000 spectators, almost all the inhabitants of the city during the Imperial period. The arena was divided into two halves by the ‘spina’, a platform on which chariots pulled by two horses (chariots) or four horses (chariots) circled.
The Rabo de Buey Aqueduct was the longest aqueduct in the Colony, more than 1.5 kilometres long. Of all the arcades of this aqueduct, only the cutwaters of some of the piers and the three pillars remain.
The Temple of Diana is a temple of the Imperial Cult, not of the goddess Diana, and is located in what was once the central forum of Mérida. Its good state of preservation is due to the fact that, for centuries, the temple served as the foundation and framework of the Renaissance palace of the Count of Corbos, parts of which are still preserved.
The Aqueduct of Los Milagros is part of a hydraulic conduit that brought water from the Proserpina reservoir. Its name comes from the admiration of locals and foreigners alike for its state of preservation despite the passage of time.
Trajan's Arch was the monumental gateway to the sacred space (temenos) surrounding a gigantic temple of imperial worship. The hinges of the doors that closed this monumental gate can still be seen on the ground. Contrary to what its name suggests, the arch has no connection with the Emperor Trajan.
The Roman bridge, one of the longest in antiquity, was built at the same time as the colony was founded, and is the work that determined the location of the city. The great floods of the Guadiana River and the conflicts of war have made numerous restorations necessary.
The Alcazaba was erected in Muslim Mérida by the Umayyad emir Abderramán II in 835 AD, and is the oldest in the peninsula. It served as the headquarters of the Umayyad administration and the residence of the local governor, as well as a filter for access to the city from the Roman bridge, and as a refuge for the Arab minority during the repeated local riots against the Cordovan power and the place where the emir's troops were billeted. Around its perimeter are 25 massive towers with walls 2.70 m wide.
