Yes, indeed, I was overwhelmed too, and I abandoned the learning. I stuck with the IDE provided by Python. But, having seen this excellent presentation, I feel that I can continue the quest.

I just started using VS Code because I'm trying to learn python and every other IDE was overly complex, including Apple's XCode and open source Eclipse, which won't run on my really old Mac anymore. Oh my gosh, I love VS Code. For Python at least. Haven't tried it for Java yet (and I haven't written a C++ program in 20 years.)

While I love the idea of this video, my screens did not look like your by default. I did have the explorer and activity and status bar as described, but by default, I did not have the panel with Ouput, Debug Problems and Terminal. When I hit F5 on the jsSample.js file, it did not run in the debug console as expected, instead it comes up with a Welcome tabbed window with Get Started with VS Code. So either this video needs some updating to a current version or the presenter has extensions installed that are not present in a new installation.
It asks me to choose a debugger and i have no idea what to do.. I installed some extension but now i cant figure out how to choose that extension. Did you figure out what to do?
I installed JavaScript Debugger (Nightly). There's also JavaScript Debugger v1.92.0. After that I pressed F5 and then selected Node.js in the search at the top. All is well.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me. Once I hit F5 the program never ran. I figured out that a debug program was never configured. I tried Node.js, but I kept getting an error. Once I figured out how to bring up the launch.json and run that, I went back to the jsSample.js to run the program. It looked like it ran, but never showed the result. I suspect I didn't set up something correctly with the debugger? I'm not sure. Do you have another video showing how to set up all of the basic configurations?
Thank you! I've been using open source solutions for years, and while they are still great, they are very old-school and I have to start learning to use Visual Studio and VSC for my work and it's a real paradigm shift compared to the IDEs of old.

Hi. I am having problems in running the JavaScript. It will not debug. Nothing comes up in the "Debug Console" tab and it takes me to the blank "Terminal" tab. I have followed everything correctly up to now. Is there any external debugging software we need to download or is there something that isn't explained in the video that we need to be doing? Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Boy when i open my folder i dont have the same view as you do, actually i couldnt even see the top menu bar across the top at all. I had to find it, by reading the pop ups as i moused across the top. I then clicked full screen mode and saw them. I dont have any of the headings on the right side like you do. 'output debug" etc I just have a list of shortcuts with the giant vsc logo above it, then right of that it says to drag a view here to display. Im really lost. I closed the app and opened it again, and now it looks more like your view, but i still dont have the 'output debug' icons in the center panel. My list in the center panel is also different, i have 'new file open file open folder'. Ok i see the bottom panel is the terminal, so i clicked on 'new terminal' in the top bar menu and got a similar one to your view, a little different.
I love the web preview extension. I've been using VS code for some weeks now, and I've always used alt + shift + b for web previews. I'm saved now, thank you for the concise yet super helpful video.
You should use light theme on your tutorials. Some of us are using smaller screens to watch your videos. Dark screens do not display as clearly as light themes do. A large computer monitor may (in fact it does) display dark theme better than small ones do. Besides, the brightness of a large monitor can be adjusted if it is too bright.
mine doesn't run when I hit F5. I get the run and debug window, but it doesn't run? I get a box at the top that says Select Debugger - list of node.js, VS Code extension debugger, Web App Chrome, Web App Edge.

I know I am an idiot, but this isn't working for me. I downloaded the program, followed along to the steps, entered the Java code, hit F5 and nothing. I can't figure it out. A new window just pops up that says I need to select a debugger. Sorry, first day trying to learn this stuff. Any ideas?
