SailGP is sailing redefined. Established in 2018 and headquartered in London and San Francisco, SailGP is an annual, global sports championship featuring bold, cutting-edge technology and awe-inspiring athleticism. The fan-centric, inshore racing takes place in some of the most iconic harbors around the globe and culminates with a $1 million winner-takes-all match race. Rival national teams from Australia, China, France, Great Britain, Japan and the United States battle it out in identical supercharged F50 catamarans, engineered for intense racing at electrifying speeds exceeding 50 knots (nearly 60 mph).

yeah ... on the same quest ... I think they are pressurizing a hydraulic system that assists the sail guys to tack and trim the sails.

They decided to give the sailors something to do that resembles what they used to do, but now they use muscle power to generate electricity. The grinders used to pull in the sheets (ropes) that control the sail angles. I think one of the boats still had a traditional sheet and winch, where the guy will quickly wrap the rope (sheet) around the winch and just holds it. Mostly, these boats use hydraulic power to move the main sail and also control the underwater foils. The foils can be angled and are very important in these kinds of boats, since they are more like airplanes and you need to control pitch which you don't normally need to do in a sailboat or your boat digs into the water and could flip. They decided to make the pressure manual instead of a motorized compressor. This makes the whole boat 'manual' with no solar or batteries or gas engines, keeping in spirit with sailing of old times where you only have the wind and your muscles. Also moving the crew to the correct side gives a counterweight to help keep the boat balanced. With a motorized compressor, these boats could be operated by just one person.

This video lives on the SailGP website. This page explains the job. While the video doesn't. Basically, the grinders generate electrical power to the boat's controls. sailgp.com/news/what-it-takes-to-be-a-sailgp-grinder/

This one says the grinders control the main winch only. Everything else is electric controlled powered by batteries that are charged by solar back onshore.

Same query as those posted below. They 'grind' for what looks like minutes - 6 of them - and nothing on the boat seems to move.

I can see its hard work, but the question "what is a grinder?" remains unanswered. Is this an electrical generator, hydraulic, pneumatic, are they charging batteries, pulling ropes?

How much they tried to merge this type of activity and technology of the new boats with meaning of sailing ACC boats from the past, they completely veered off the original true sailing and feel of the past races. Now they have basically human motors for powering the hydraulic pressure and with one helmsman on completely automated aircraft-like vessel. There is no raising/lowering of sails, pulling and releasing sheets or any handling of rigging whatsoever what regular crew needed to do and know on classical old school monohull ACC era.

How inclusive of the sailing race elite to make a boat that only an ironman can crew on. Easy solution of course: put a woman on the helm
