Good evening Mark, yes, unlike the sting of aftershave; but I’ve got a tube of original Nivea shave cream made in Turkey that I got from Amazon. Didn’t look at the date code, but the burn made my 60 year plus skin break out. Had to wash my face in cold water with neutragena face soap.
Unlucky Prentiss . It is horrible when that happens! One just hopes that the burn won't last. I must admit to TOBS still being by far the worst of my unfortunate soap experiences. It was evil.
That was a very nice shave, with the 34c. It didn't used to work so well for me, but that was a really nice shave; it definitely would work as a daily razor. You can't beat the little Macy 😁👍 Cheers Ray
Hi Mark Great shave and razor comparison video; thank you! It was very nice seeing both of these razors in-action side-by-side. Sorry about the reaction to the soap; it’s frustrating, I know. I hope you have a relaxing weekend ahead. Be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, my friend!
Thanks Mike. Yes, it was a bit frustrating to have a reaction to another soap that I really liked the fragrance. Onwards and upwards though. All the very best buddy.
Hello. Sorry for my delayed reply - The brush is from the Yaqi, I believe it is called Night Sky. They make amazing brushes and their synthetic brushes are amazing. I hope you enjoy your new razor. All the best.
Great comparison shave, literally side by side test, one razor stroke after another, like the short handle. Sorry to hear that once again your skin reacted against the soap scent you like. Hope all s well down your neck of the woods. Keep well Mark
Thank you. It was a good shave, and quite hard to discern very minor differences. I'm not doing so well with these soaps, lately. I must write them down and keep a list of the offenders. Cheers Roy. Enjoy your day.
Greetings from Tennessee! Nice shave and comparison review, notwithstanding the disappointing soap. It happens to all of us and comes with the territory (I think...at least in my territorial experience...lol). It's great seeing you in good health and feeling good these days. Please recall that approximately 5 years ago, you did a review of the Rockwell 2C Razor. Based upon your review and that of a new shave channel guy (Rick...Rick Shaves), I made a purchase of this razor through Amazon. With one shave on the books for me, it is fair to say that the 2C exceeds all expectations. Soooo, this morning, I wrote to Rockwell Razors in order to advise them of my new purchase (wanting the two of you to have some credit in their eyes). I was concerned about using old links. In any event, thank you for the fine recommendation. I try to visit nearly all of your videos, but do not always sign in, etc. ...will try to be more diligent in the future. Please make care of yourself and give my best to your mom and sister...loved the video with the Dreadnaught razor. As an old military guy, I've always been intrigued by the Dreadnaught class of warship..was quite formidable in its day. With my compliments, thanks and kindest personal regards. Charles K. P.S. Let me know if you hear something from Rockwell.
Hello, Charles. Thank you for getting in touch with Rockwell razors; I will certainly let you now, should I hear something from them. I must admit I enjoy my 6C. It is one of the best razors on the market both for price and shave. I enjoyed finding out about Dreadnought ships. There was a huge difference between that first ship, and the later Dreadnoughts, which looked very much like a modern warship. Some of them served up until the end of the second world war. Fascinating. I hope you and your family are keeping well, my friend. We are doing okay, over this side of the big pond. All the best Charles.
Nice shave. Ive heard both razors are good, especially for beginners. To bad about the cream though. Ive still been using my new shavette. About once a week. Getting better everytime. I used it yesterday with paa cad soap. And did a 2 pass shave with no nicks. Very happy with that. Then used my rockwell 6c with the number 2 plate for a few pick ups. Have a great wknd
Perhaps check which chemicals in that soap are also in the TOBS soaps (a soap that irritates my skin unfortunately) to help identify which one(s) are causing you irritation.
I might check that Pete, but I am convinced that it is the fragrance oils used in some soaps that I react too. I wonder if, generally, people react to cheap fragrance oils more than more expensive, better quality oils. I don't know.
Hello Mark… I thought I pick one of your earlier videos to watch before I get into bed while I had a nice cup of PG Tips Decaf Tea sweetened with a spoon of honey. You know, I’ve after been afraid of trying different Shaving Soaps because of my allergies, especially after I have had a recent severe reaction. I was bitten by a venomous Spider back on January 10th and I have a terrible reaction… Bee Stings also cause a terrible problem for me and I was hospitalized twice because of it. Here I am weeks later and I was outside today and ended up getting hives simple from the high Pollen count in the air. It’s because the reaction from the spider bit back in January has left me hypersensitive to allergens. Sometimes it last for a few weeks, sometimes three months of so. With the natural shavings soap I use, I’ve had no issues, and I recently got a tub of DROID Black for Phoenix Shaving, and I’m okay. But I have another tube of artisan shave soap that cause a rash and also caused me to breakout in hives on my neck. So I’m going to put that shop away and give it a try a few weeks from now. Some razor blades cause skin irritation for me especially on my neck. Feather Blades work well for me, but they cause my skin to get red and it stings. I don’t know if it’s the sharpness of the blade, or perhaps the coating… or both? So yeah, I have to be careful. I could see your skin was irritated after you rinse your face. As for the razors, I have been looking at the 34C for a while, as well as the 23C with the longer handle. But I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. One of the reasons is because I’ve been told that both of the razor I’m looking at, shave very much like my King C Gillette razors. Because of my large hands, I think the 23C would be better for me. But I think become I’m so impressed with the King C Gillette, Im not in a hurry to get the 34C or 23C. That and I recently got a beautiful Gillette Fat-handle Tec that I just love. So maybe my next pay I’ll pick one of the razors up. I believe you have shaved with the King C Gillette (?), and if so, how do these razor compare with it? Some claimed they are too mild. However, that wouldn’t bother me as long as they’re efficient. Right! Time for bed. All my best Mark… 😊
OMG, I have replied to this twice already and messed it up both times (new glasses). Hey George. I am finding Haslinger Sheep to be very good, at the moment. I think it would be a very good soap for you to try, if you can get it out there, when you are in trouble with allergens. I have never had a reaction to a PAA soap but A&E seems to affect me quite often. The three razors you mentioned are very similar. The fat handle tech is indeed an excellent mild razor. I think a nice Fat boy; Slim or even the 109 super adjustable, which has the longest handle might provide a lovely bit of variety; although they are adjustable, they are mild razors. Cheers.
That scent reminds me of wall paint with added antifungal agents which smell like citruses, however, I do not think that is necessarily bad. There is a reason they add that to paint.
Nice razor comparison Mark. My 34g is one of my dependable and easiest razors from the first shave. Looking back I really wish I would have started with that rather than the progress. I had an r89 and just couldn’t get a good shave out of it awhile back… too mild and too many my strokes. Damn shame about that soap burn and of course you loved the scent. As I mentioned previously, I got a burn on A&E Undersea. I tried a second time a few days back and it burned again but a lot sooner in the shave. Thankfully just a sample. I loved that scent.. ah well. I came across a post on a forum with others who had issues with A &E stuff since their products usually have a decent amount of scenting oils leading to a pretty stout scent. I don’t often get a burn but had one with a bay rum - could have been the clove or something. But in that case I didn’t care for the scent much. Take care buddy!
The last few times I have used a '34' I seem have a better shave each time. I would have thought the R89 would be similar but it does have a very lightweight handle and perhaps that makes the difference. I really hope I don't get a reaction from Undersea. I have yet to try it but I like the scent of that one too. I do think it is definitely the scent oils that cause a reaction and it stands to reason that the more used would amplify the effect. I would also assume that cheaper oils would cause an issue. Cheers pal.
@@FriendshipShaving the cheaper oils idea is interesting. People have mentioned the reactions years back …. But recently A&E dropped their prices a bit even with the newer base to give customers a break. They have been known to have the best or at least a top tier base so not sure if they have sourced different materials to accommodate the price drop even in these inflationary times. Good luck with Undersea not reacting. Fingers crossed.
@@RonnieYates Undersea reacted. It's now five minutes after my two passes and the burn is intensifying. I'll be testing all my A&E soaps, soon. I'm not impressed.
@@FriendshipShaving ah shit. Sorry Mark. Kaizen and Asian plum the only other 2 I tried were ok. I did not like Asian Plum although interesting. Smelled more floral after lathering and not my thing. Kaizen was good but not sure good enough to buy as I have a lot. I will only buy A&E samples first - no doubt.
It is a bit of a pain that I reacted to the three soaps, which I loved the fragrance. Onwards and upwards, my friend. I have more to try so we're all good. I did like St. Barts though.
I have both EJ DE89 with short handle and the Merkur 34c, both give me great smooth mild shaves, for me I could not really say which is smoother, the only thing for me is the 34c is a touch more efficient, although I've used the 34c for longer. You're having some bad luck reacting to some lovely scented soaps. I didn't think there was any menthol in Proraso white? I have the new white and can understand that white paint aroma you get, although not unpleasant to me. Take care and keep safe.👍😎🤟
There used to be menthol in the older version of Proraso White, but not as much as the Green, the newer version of the soap doesn't have any in it. I am enjoying my shaves with the loaned 34c.
Hello Mark, andI hope you are well my friend. I came across this video while researching two razors I’m looking at… the Merkur 38C and Edwin Jagger DE-89L… every time I think I have decided on which of the two razors I should buy, I get second thoughts. Now I expect that both will save much alike and both are likely not much different then my King C Gillette razors. The Edwin Jagger would be nice because it’s made in the UK which I still feel a part of all these years later. And the 38C would be nice because of the fact it’s a two piece razor, and I currently don’t have any two piece razors. Do you have a video comparing these two razor… or have personally experienced with both? You are very honest and straightforward, and I know you opinions are based on your findings rather then brand loyalty or bias. Would you mind sharing your opinion? Thank you, and I would appreciate it. I’m in the process of working on my budget and attempting to secure some funding for my research projects, and my time is limited at the moment. All my best.
Nice comparison shave. I too think that the Merkur is a little smoother than the DE89, which disappointed me in a recent shave. I've finally realized that I prefer forgiving razors because of how aggressively I shave. I used to think that was paradoxical, but I'm over that, and I'd say my 34G suits me better than the DE89 in this respect. But they're in the same ballpark.
This is an interesting comment, Warren. As you are an aggressive shaver, do you generally prefer milder razors over more aggressive options? One would think so.
Yes. The ones with less blade exposure and better blade control let me shave against the growth, buff, and quickly switch directions - the keys to a close shave - with fewer nicks and irritation. I know some think they can avoid this extra effort with a razor with more bite. I assume this is so, but my beard doesn’t yield to such razors, in contrast to my skin, which does.
Hello Mark. Sorry to see you having to rush the end of the shave. Gutted for you getting some irritation from another one of your favourite scented soap. The Kelvin razor at the time of purchase, was usually around the £17 mark. But offers brought it down to around the £13. Which at the time was 1/3 of the price of the Merkur 34c. Hope you have a great weekend. 🏴👍
Thanks mate. I'm gutted about that one. Pecksniffs next week. Actually, I haven't tried it yet. I must do so before I get on camera. I like to try a soap on video for my first use of it but, after this run of luck I think I had better start having a test shave with whatever I am going to use. Enjoy your weekend too, Andrew. Take care.👍
Nice shave Mark! Too bad about the soap, maybe the scenting oils are getting you. 🤔 If it is the oils, the splash might do the same thing to your skin. Have a good one! Steve
Yes, I think they are, Steve. I have been reading around the topic and it seems a few people react to A&E soaps as they are quite strongly scented. It makes sense the splash would be the same 😕
Oh, that is much worse! I'm sorry for your luck. I think that is about six soaps that I'm allergic too now; I'll have to write them down. Which one did you buy?
Were all different. It just so happens that the razor seems to suit me more now than it did a few years ago but I know there are lots of fellows just like yourself. All the best.👍
Very nice shave comparison Unfortunitly Ariana and evens feel that they don't need the African Market " they are to a big company" to get involve with South Africa. I am not sure about the goodwill and pureness of hart of all artisans any more., $$$
Thank you, Henk. The African market would undoubtedly be huge. I can only assume Ariana and Evans don't post to SA, which is a great shame. In the end, it will be their loss. Take care.
Damn shame about the soap. I’ve owned the coconut scented virgin island waters by Creed in the past. People always used to say, “you’ve not washed off your shower gel”!! Not once did I I ever get a compliment. Shame you had a reaction. I think that’s not the first time with A&E, perhaps there’s something else going on. Take care.
That's quite amusing Nick, although I bet it wasn't at the time, after you spent all that money to smell like shower gel - I loved the scent of St Barts.. I used to wear a really, really cheap fragrance - actually I still have some, but whenever I wore it I received compliments from women. It's a strange thing bur I used to wear it quite a lot 😅👍 All the best mate.
I am sincerely sorry that your enjoyment of a soap that you like is mitigated by some kind of sensitivity to its ingredients. I very rarely have negative reactions to soap but recently I did discover the aromatic version of an "Aftertaste" in a bath & body bar. I bought the Limited Edition of Duke Supply Company's : Victory Is Your Hands 10 oz bar soap. It has a fragrance that I can only describe as "Institutional"...It's not medicinal, floral or perfume-like. According to the box; it's a formulation of the soap given to American G.I.s during the Korean War and is actually made in the same facility which made the original. Anyway, it has this odd scent that while not unpleasant has a strange and lingering under scent which makes me nauseous. The soap cleans very well and doesn't(FORTUNATELY)leave a scent on the skin but if I use it a clothing drawer deodorizer(potpourri) the under sent immediately gives me that unpleasant sensation. I've deliberately been using this soap exclusively for the past week in an effort to desensitize myself. All of this being a long winded way of saying, I understand and feel your pain.
My goodness, that seems to be a horrible soap. I cannot imagine using a soap that actually makes one nauseous! I wonder what it is that does that, and why. An institutional scent, is also a little strange. Some of the vintage (original) soaps that I have tried, going way back, had a, sort of, coal tar type scent, but not quite the same; certainly odd to our noses and they have triggered my asthma, but what an experience to have a soap that makes you nauseous! Unlucky!
Thanks
No problem

Before I got my Kelvin, it was a wonderfully kind gift, I thought that I would hate such a short handled razor but it turns out that I love it.

It makes sense the splash would be the same 😕
So sorry for your luck Mark. I just had one do the same to me that I paid for.
Oh, that is much worse! I'm sorry for your luck. I think that is about six soaps that I'm allergic too now; I'll have to write them down. Which one did you buy?
@@FriendshipShaving razor emporium element 47. It smells amazing but burned like fire
It must be frustrating about the soap causing burning.
Yes, perhaps it happens more often, when the soap has a stronger scent, and more fragrance oil. It's a shame.
I just can't get a good shave with the Merkur 34c
Were all different. It just so happens that the razor seems to suit me more now than it did a few years ago but I know there are lots of fellows just like yourself. All the best.👍
Very nice shave comparison
Unfortunitly Ariana and evens feel that they don't need the African Market " they are to a big company" to get involve with South Africa.
Unlucky!
