    I found this washstand on Facebook Marketplace and brought it home for $40, which is about the highest I'd be willing to pay for a piece in this rough of a shape. I knew the paint and shellac layers would be quite the challenge to remove going into it, but these makeovers are usually the most rewarding in the end.
    When I noticed that the entire piece was 100% solid wood, I immediately decided that I want to stain it; this meant that I'd have to do a very thorough job of removing the layers of gunk. Another challenge of scraping this much is trying to avoid digging into the wood with the scraper by accident.
    I wanted to raise the height of the piece, so I gave it some tall legs with extra shelf space at the bottom, using what was originally the top of the piece. The vacant space behind the missing door was turned into a wine storage space with a removable rack.

      Wonderful video Andy, as usual. To be honest, I won't ever achieve your quality , but I simply watch the videos to admire the craftsmanship. So great Andy! I never would have thought of raising it with tall legs and adding a shelf for fear of it looking 'top heavy', but it turned out to be a perfect decision. Thanks for sharing your process and of course the humorous edits. Looking forward to your next one.

    I inherited an old wash stand that my grandfather repaired years ago, but the original owner never picked it up. It sat in his garage/workroom for decades. My parents inherited his house and mom found that wash stand. As they were moving it into the house, they discovered the granite slab used for the top wasn't actually attached, and took it off to made the stand easier to move. Imagine their surprise to discover the granite slab was actually an old tombstone, lol.

      @@carolinejohnson22 lol no. The rest of the story is that grandpa used to pick up odd jobs for extra money when his 3 kids were little. Our city was moving an old cemetery and there were a number of tombstones that were unusable. So he helped remove them. He also used some fragments to floor the enclosed back porch. That's where you find names and dates on some stones, lol.

    Oh wow, I have an antique washstand like the one you had; before refurbishing. Mine still has the door on it and it's in such wonderful shape because in the mid 70's my beautiful Mom refinished it. She was a dab hand at bringing back antiques to life. When we moved into our Victorian home in 1972 every single piece of wood in the house, including pocket doors, banisters and stairs were painted over. It took my Mom at least a full year to fully restore the wood back in our house to it's original charm. I bet if she were alive she'd be watching your channel and taking notes!

    • @familiecole
      @familiecole ปีที่แล้ว +33

      The act of restoration is to repair, renew or reinvigorate the condition of sth. I would therefore agree that it is a restoration... and an excellent one at that.

    • @peoplecallmepeechez
      @peoplecallmepeechez ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@familiecole I don't know about that. Most definitions I could find for the term restoration implies that it is bringing something back to a former condition. So the fact that he visually changed the look of the piece means he's creating something new rather than restoring it to it's original look. I believe this falls more under refurbished

    • @familiecole
      @familiecole ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@peoplecallmepeechez it is of course subjective but I stand to disagree. The condition has been restored. The function and design have been amended.

    Another beautiful makeover Andy! It's funny, my refinishing experience has been pretty substantial looking back...
    1) 2021: kitchen table (sanded and painted grey),
    2) 2014: 8 dining room chairs (removed orangey stain and stained dark walnut), (took forever)
    3) 1999: smaller 1920's era kitchen table and four matching chairs (paint stripped and stained dark walnut)
    4) 1998: large wood desk and chair. stripped clear coat and stained dark walnut.
    4) As a teenager in 1991, I repainted over my Mom's childhood hideous bright yellow 4 drawer dresser with grey and black paint. Then in my mid 20's, I stripped both coats of paint away and did a clear finish. I still use it today since it's kind of a family heirloom now. The wood grain and even the ridged fluted look are identical to this washstand! Since I am also in Toronto area, I would imagine it is of the same era and possibly manufacturer. I still remember working into those grooves with paint stripper, steel wool and sandpaper to get the black and yellow paint out. Took hours!
    Had a question, why do you choose wax instead of polyuretane clear coat?

    neat trick with the clock, dude. seeing those hours whizz away really elucidates the work involved in the basic prep.
