Thankyou so much Steven again for sharing so much. It honestly means the world to follow an author who is willing to discuss so much of his work. And thanks to the book club for taking me through this again. And of course thank you two for bringing this together again. And being brave (almost silly) enough to decide to start this read through of what is to me the most special collection of stories ever released. Your insights and experiences with these books allow me to live vicariously through you reading them again for the first time. Lastly I bet you'll read them again :P love you all! X

Amazing as usual. I also share Stevens sentiment on how angry I am (joking of course) to not have an episode this week.

What a fantastic interview!! Surprise surprise I always say that 😂 but really, some fresh insights, laughter and joy, what more could we want.
Lana thanks for asking my question about Binadas and you’ll note that Steve did not DENY hating Binadas!!!!! Hahaaaaaaa
As always, just really appreciate the extensive nature of these interviews - you always dive deep with the questions and follow ups, and Steve always dives deep for his answer. I love his pauses before he answers - he’s genuinely giving each question deep thought before responding at all. ❤❤❤
Anyway, like Steve I am also mad about no episode next week 😤 😤 😤 but I will survive. See y’all in 2 weeks for THE BONEHUNTERS !!!!

LOL true story. I just started reading Malazan a few weeks ago because, as I’m writing a book on film, I found that reading Jung simultaneously was invading my analysis *too* directly and not the usual distance with which I usually deploy Jung.
So I decided I wanted something completely different and started reading these fantasy books that I had heard so much about. And I’m reading Gardens of the Moon, and I’m thinking: “This is all so Jungian!” Glad someone is doing a full treatise on the subject. Can’t wait to read it when I’m done with the Malazan Book of the Fallen (I’m reading Deadhouse Gates now).

Steve, I reject the premise of your mischaracterisation of my position, sir. 😂
Characters are not 'merely' plot functions, but characters are indeed plot functions AND are realised and expanded upon. Evidence you say? Why I will quoute Steven Erikson's response when discussing the absence of Binadas, "His role just fell away"... his role eh? That sounds suspiciously like narrative function in sheep's clothing. 😂😂
    Something, something, petard hoisted... 😂😂

I know Kharkanas series ain't on your radar yet, but hear me out. There's a character introduced early in book two. Haven't finished the book yet, but i'm pretty sure he's gonna be one of those "side characters" that deepens the world and makes it feel real, but in any case, It's THE BEST character intro i've ever read, and i can porbably talk for about 2 hours on why i think it's a work of a master. Steven's super power is that he can knock you out cold in 15 pages or less. It's a very, very rare talent among writers these days

Something that I always wonder about during an Erikson interview is if he is into punkrock. The mindset in his books and him talking about his worldview reminds me of punkrock. (or at least my view on punkrock) Anger mixed with empathy and compassion topped of with a critical mind. For some reason hearing him talk always brings the band Bad Religion to mind.
