Nice reaction. John is unique in so many ways, not least in that he is the only song writer, composer, performer or recording artist to have written or co-written two state songs for individual states in the United States in the 20th century.. In the years following his untimely death in a plane accident in California in October 1997, Rocky Mountain High was selected as a state song for John's beloved Colorado and Take Me Home, Country Roads was selected as a state song for West Virginia. Only one other composer, Stephen Foster in the 19th century held that unique honour before John, so John has joined an exclusive club of two! Isn't that amazing?

I've live in over two dozen places around the world, from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to the Hawaiian paradise, to Germany and England, and in many locations in the United States, deep south, southwest, the great plains, the Pacific coast, the Great Lakes region, and the east coast. I currently live in Colorado (Centennial, the southern part of Denver). This is my third time living in Colorado (1961-1964, 1974-1978, and 2019 to present), and I've always known I'd end up here. I really can't explain it, but there is something special about the Rocky Mountains. I spent a bit of time in Afghanistan, and the mountains there are magnificent and the Rocky Mountains are underwhelming by comparison, but for some reason, they just still seem more magical. Visiting the Rocky Mountains in Colorado should be on everyone's bucket list.

Some friends and I used to camp in the Colorado Rockies, the Grand Tetons and Alberta way, back in the seventies. There were these places that struck you to the bone with their beauty. In the late spring of '76 we camped along Grand Tetons, with the snow-capped mountain range in the background, piercing low hanging gray clouds ("poking the eye of God") nesting behind a line of tall pines at their foot, a clear ice-cold mountain lake in front of them, and in the foreground was a field of multitude of different colored wild flowers. We nick-named the place "Cheyenne Valley." We cooked thick steaks, with its juices dripping over open flames, causing them to lick the the meat, along with baked potatoes, and drank beer cooled in the ice-cold lake. Best damn meal I ever had or ever will! If there's a heaven, then Cheyenne Valley was a glimpse of it!

Some of my greatest memories are of hiking and shivering in a tent in Colorado with my wife. Breaking camp at sunrise and hiking for hours to sit at a waterfall alone with my woman and the beauty and solitude of god's creations. This song embodies this feeling. Still doing it at age 62 with the same woman plus my beautiful grand children

It was remarkable. These were the days when people were inspired to pack up their tents and go see and experience a bit of the nature that they heard in these songs. And they would bring their guitars and sing the music around actual campfires. As a kid those memories Would last a lifetime. Can you imagine it

He also did a song called "Paradise" written by John Prine. It's worth a listen.

John transcends all cultures. I am a Colorado native and when I hear him sing about fire in the sky, I think about every sunset I've seen in the Rockies. He's not lying about it.

The fire in the sky in this song refers to the Persied meteor showers he and Annie were experiencing while camping.

Me too. Unfortunately I took him literally when he said "sunshine in your eyes can make you cry". I stared at the sun until I really cried. That was 1974 and I still see the sun whenever I close my eyes 😎
