    Thank you for this video, I was able to successfully repair my Sony MZ-E60 with this guide. He also had a noisy sled motor and reading problems.

    still cant distinguish which unwanted sounds requires lubrication only or lens replacement. but this gave me an idea to get back to lubricating some of my nonworking units

      20 years is definitely a long time for many of these things that weren't maintained so sometimes a clean and lube is all it takes. Good luck!

    Thank you for sharing this. Very interesting ! My unit still works like a charm for now but I'll keep this video in my favorites just in case.

    Can you do a video on, either the MZ-E630 or the MZ-E501, I removed the lids to put silicone grease on the laser sleds and now the E50 won't recognise inserted discs and the E501 will only play discs if I press on the top. I'm sure it's to do with the lid mechanisms. I've cleaned and lubed a few of my recorders and they're all fine. Thanks again for your in-depth videos on Minidisc hardware maintenance and repair TI. cheers

      Hello @paulrod0711 and thanks as always for your kind words! I don't have either of those, but I will look around! I have definitely had similar issues due to either the door being bent or the latch mechanism being misaligned. For yours, does it power on and attempt to play just fine, but won't read discs until you've pushed down on the lid?

      @@TechnicalInitiative Hi TI and thanks for your reply. The MZ-E501 will only read and play the MD if I push down on the Walkman logo and it stops when I stop pushing down on it. The MZ-E630, the light comes on saying it's trying to read and then goes off again. It is probably down to the lid mech. I only removed the lids to get access to the laser worm gear to lubricate them. Cheers.

      @@paulr0911 Hello again! Just to be clear - does the E501 power off when you release the lid pressure or does it just stop reading the disc (but remains powered on)?

    • @paulr0911
      @paulr0911 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TechnicalInitiative Hi TI, the E501 behaves like I have ejected the MD when I release the lid. when I press on the WM logo it reads the TOC and then I can press play and it plays, skips tracks etc.. until I release the lid again.

      @@paulr0911 OK that reminds me of one of my MZ-N1 where the lid was bent just enough to disengage the "lid closed" switch/sensor - do you happen to see any gaps at all when you have the lid closed but not pressed with your finger?

    I really want an e10, but the e900 just seems more practical.

    What oil do you use?

    • @TechnicalInitiative

      I just used my usual white lithium grease that I use for the gearshaft and sled rail

    They all make weird noises like grinding don’t they? Or it’s more like a chatter sound.

    • @TechnicalInitiative
      @TechnicalInitiative  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I suppose one could call them that, but well-lubed devices should be "whirring" or just have audible motor noises not loud grinding noises. As with most machinery/gears, smooth, efficient motion is quiet and means the device or mechanism will last longer. Consider how a clothes washer sounds when it's out of balance compared to running smoothly, for example.
