  • Wells-next-the-Sea's brand new Shannon class lifeboat arrived in its new Norfolk home this week. Watch to the end, to see the Shannon Launch and Recovery System (SLARS) in operation.
The Launch a Memory lifeboat arrived in Wells Quay at 5.30pm, carrying with it 15,000 names of loved ones in its decals, ‘RNLI 13-46’. It was an exciting and special delivery - the town also has a brand new boathouse. Although the new lifeboat station is not yet open to the public, further information on when there will be opportunities to see the lifeboat, will be released in the coming weeks.
Named 'Duke of Edinburgh', the lifeboat replaces their current all-weather lifeboat, a Mersey class which has been in service there for 32 years. Launching in 1990, it's the oldest boat currently in our fleet. The Shannon class is our fastest all-weather lifeboat.
This lifeboat, was funded in part through an appeal in the local Wells community, and by the Civil Service charity The Lifeboat Fund.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need. Whether you're stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.
But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.
If you spot someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

@@rnli - Wonderful. My brother's name is on the boat at RNLI Clifden, Ireland. It really is a comforting thought.

With two names on, that will be such a special trip for you, Roger.
We’ll also update the Your Launch a Memory Wells update page with any future opportunities to visit the station to see the lifeboat with the special decal on it: rnli.social/3evOIUp
This hub also features an online search tool so that people can view their loved one’s names on the lifeboat virtually.

May all the crews who are scheduled to work with the new lifeboat be safe.
Curious, what will happen to the lifeboat that is being replaced.

Hi Roy, Ex-lifeboats have varied retirements. Some go to other rescue organisations in countries around the world including Uruguay and continue saving lives, others go into private ownership for use as houseboats and leisure cruisers, some are used for tourism, some enter our relief fleet where that class of boat is still in service, and special vessels might take pride of place in a museum.

That's an amazing turnout from the town to see the new lifeboat!
Was that an older RNLI lifeboat at 2:50?

Thanks Matt! The blue and grey one at the front of the frame? Yes that's a historic lifeboat, there are quite a few restored and looked after by private owners in the Norfolk area, there are some good pics in this gallery on Wells' website: rnli.social/3eqgUbh
