I am a vendor who was involved with engine room components of Thunder when she was being built and we had to go through the ringer with Lurssen before we were "approved" to work on this project. At the time we just thought Lurssen was being more thorough with vendors but it all makes sense now.

The secrecy and the strict environment must make working on these big monster yachts a real bummer. Most of the yachts I worked on were in the 44 meter to 50 meter range and we could tell the folks who our boss was - no problem. We loved our work onboard - I worked in the engine room as chief and had a lot of good times and traveled around the world. And back in those days the Captain would get all the crew together, usually on a late Sunday afternoon, for what he called a crew dinner at a very nice restaurant once (1) a month, on the owner's tab, when we would be in the Mediterranean in Spain or France or Italy or Palma de Mallorca and it was absolutley surperb. These mega yacht crews must feel like being drafted into the uber strict military service and live under extreme stress 24/7.

    • @leothompson2777
      @leothompson2777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

She never worked for anyone with any actual power or influence. She may have been a maid on board something they owned, but under no circumstances would have been anywhere near the actual owner. She would have been the maid of a maid 'captain'. Putin etc would not have civilian staff anywhere near their vessels with them on it. Whoever the captain is is simply a caretaker, and is removed whenever he is onboard.

I don't remember when but it was years ago and I was much much younger, my father and I would often take drives to Viejo San Juan and check out whatever ships were in port because they were and still are cool to look at, and sometimes there would be similar barriers covering sail ships or yachts docked to the boardwalk next to the Cruise Port Terminals.

I am a skipper by trade, operating all manner of privately owned vessels up to 30 or 40 metres in length. I am often asked why I don't go overseas (I am in Sydney, Australia) and work on bigger boats. My reply is twofold:
    1) I love Sydney Harbour and know almost every inch of it, I could probably do a four hour cruise around here in my sleep. It is also a beautiful place, one of the great harbours of the world, particularly in summer.
    2) As much as I appreciate the workmanship and design of these megayachts,, I find them disgusting to be honest. They are so far above and beyond what any reasonable person could need from a boat. They serve no real purpose aside from massaging the ego of people displaying their (often) ill gotten gains.
If I had unlimited money I would probably buy an 80 foot Princess flybridge. There is really nothing that a 400 foot yacht can do that an 80 foot yacht can't, in fact the ridiculous size of these megayachts actually restricts the places they can go. The master bedroom on a well appointed 80 foot vessel is so comfortable and spacious, I don't see how much more an owner could really need. The draft and LOA of these megayachts mean going anywhere requires planning and money to grease palms and pay mooring fees, not to mention the tons of diesel they require to run.
As a fellow mariner, I am curious as to whether you find these boats as superfluous as I do. I understand they are an 'investment' in so far as if all your bank accounts are frozen and properties seized you can just take your megayacht overseas and sell it for cash, but aside from being giant floating piggy banks and demonstrations of wealth, I just don't see the point of them.
    Cheers, William.

@@niksapaypal2077 i don't understand what your point is. most vessels don't need to go 1000s of miles without stopping, unless they are cargo ships or they are running from something. the russian yachts that are doing 4000 mile steams don't even have the owners on them haha. they fly in a plane.

@@elbert108 point was you say what 400feet can do 80feet can't. And that's go arround the world or anywhere else on the earth.
Plus you think and say you don't want bigger but when 500millions is like 100$ for averge guy ofcourse you will get.
I spend a lot of times on 30 40meters boat and they are at first big and more than you need. But than.
I'm 6"9 a lot of them have low ceiling
You always feel cramped and stairs and everything you can feel space saving.
So yeah bigger better and more options. If I can fly boat wait for me.
Every little bit of luxurie matters when you on that level.
You have always tender boats and can access any part of the earth with boat that size.
And they are least investment. And no you can't just sell them overnight is not market they you go to pawj shop and sell it.
And they will for sure not sell it for half price just because they need money other wise with that way of thinking they will never get rich.
And last most boat is still buy on credit and with banks. So running them under some company owner doesn't even feel.compare to other expanses.

BTW, that’s a bollard, not a capstan. The winches on sailing yachts are small capstans. On the old sailing ships capstans had bars that fitted in holes on top of the capstan and a load of crew could turn it round for hauling on a variety of different rope (sheets, halyards, warps and cable etc.). Nowadays, they’re usually powered by a motor under the deck.

@Q.E.D.: Mooring Bitts, or simply Bitts are what Longshoreman called the wharf/pier mounted tie up point for large ships or yachts at ports. I was the Electrical Superintendent for the Sacramento/Yolo Port District for several years. I took the word of the men, women, and Walking Bosses who tied large cargo ship to the dock for a living to know what they're called.

Where I came from bitts were a pair of bollards, sometimes canted outwards, around which a warp could be secured by a figure eight. They were mainly mounted on ships decks, rather more often than on wharves, as they were not particularly secure against an upward pull.
On the old wooden ships the bitts were a pair of strong posts, mortised into the keel. They were where the end of the anchor cable was secured. In extremis, like a gale on a lee shore, they might have to let the cable out “right to the bitter end.”

    • @visionist7

@@q.e.d.9112 So that's where the term "bitter end" comes from. In that case I (and everyone else) have been pronouncing it wrong, placing the emphasis on the word "end" rather than the "bitt" in "bitter".

I think when you had paid out all your cable but you were still dragging your anchor towards a gale-wracked, rocky shore and pretty much certain death, then you probably used the expression in the sense of an end that is bitter.
