This guy is smart. My thermostat o ring gasket was smashed in there. It was causing the ac and fans to malfunction. I Change thermostat and gasket, took it to the auto part store and cleared all the codes. Added a can of freon and its working as it should. Thanks Hektor! Great video.

Yup, if the ECM detects a fault with the cooling system, then you’ll have these symptoms: inoperative gauge, ACOFF message, and no AC. Weird but true 👍🏼

Hektor, thanks so much for the awesome troubleshooting and repair video! My 2009 GMC Canyon had the exact same symptoms as yours, and replacing the thermostat fixed it! I never would have thought that a bad thermostat could be the cause of the problem, but inspecting the old thermostat showed that it had the exact same gasket problem you pictured in your video. Thanks for sharing!

I have a 2008 Isuzu i-290 which is the same as the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. The engine temperature gage is not functioning. Now that I watched this video, I will replace the engine temperature sensor and the thermostat. This will also save me money by not taking my vehicle to a shop. Thank You for showing an excellent method of diagnosis of the engine system. Great Job!

Chevy Colorados has this bad tendency of getting the thermostat stuck/pinned. Seeing this video helps for me to pass my emissions test in MD. Took it to a shop for a diagnostic, wanted to charge $600 (plus labor) when really it's just two things I can DIY that'll cost me only about ~$200. Thanks a lot Hektor!

    Thanks brother, changing mine today..
Edit 12-24-2024, i also changed the temperature control sensor, it's next to the thermostat and the thermostat has to be removed to access it anyway, it was difficult to get a 15mill wrench on the sensor but got it just enough to loosen, then I used curved needle nose plyers to loosen all the way along with a large screwdriver to twist it, put the new one in the same way, I was careful not to break the plastic wire connector. This is my second time this year replacing the thermostat, hopefully changing the sensor helps.

Hello @homiehektor. My Hummer H3 has a similar problem. I will confirm again on your this videos post after I do an R&R on the stuck open thermostat. Wish someone would pay me to work on my car.
Symptoms that made me take a closer look: Excessive vibrations at idle, smell of gas and oil when I turn on the blower motor inside the cabin, lacking torque and acceleration, radiator feels hotter than normal, AC compressor not engaging.
So far I have discovered a few of the problems. I would not have found them if I did not remove the Intake Manifold. What I found was: A positive valve cover dirty air tube was nearly melted by years and miles of oil, fumes, and corrosion, Cylinder 4's Ignition Coil connectors completely broke, Either I broke it or when I was reaching and leaning on the engine to reach the ECT or my neighbor broke it when he leaned over on it. Well after 230,000 miles, it might be time to replace those coils anyways. The ECT seems okay based on my Ohms test but it's not very conclusive. The gauge does show about 1/3rd way to max coolant temp. But it is still lower than it was way the AC was working last week.
More on this as I replace the thermostat next.

You should be getting a check engine light and a p0128 code from the OBD port if the thermostat or coolant temperature sensor are bad. The computer expects the coolant to reach operating temperature within a certain amount of time. If it takes too long to warm up, for example if the thermostat is stuck open, it'll throw a p0128 even if the coolant temperature sensor is good. When the computer senses a cooling system fault, it will disable the AC compressor clutch to reduce engine load and lower the likelihood of overheating.

    • @mikey13b
      @mikey13b ปีที่แล้ว

Do you know what the minimum operating temperature is for it to not throw a code? And do you know what the timeframe is that this must be reached? Thanks!

I have a similar issue with my 08 colorado, I5. Temp gauge reads lower then normal. Changed T-stat about 5 years ago when I saw it running way low. A week ago the gauge moved then zeroed and gave me the AC off code. The next day it went away and temp gauge moves but slow. Coolant moves in radiator and hoses are hot. Was think it was the ETC switch, didn’t know where it was. I’ll try to unplug and clean contacts, it’s dust in west Texas and see if that helps. That’s to the Rona, it will take weeks before a dealer can look at it. Might be the T-stat again. Thanks for the video and Info.

Same thing happen to my car I verified sensor with multimeter and got the correct ohm reading for the coolent temp and was getting 5vdc from computer so I knew it wasn't that but the wierdest thing of this whole situation is why does the gauge on the cluster go out?? And if you undo battery cables it resets everything. Is the car computer system just smart enough to drop out guage on dash like that when thermostat isn't working properly?

They should probably clear... probably after a set amount of cycles within a specified range, but, Try this..... Disconnect the Battery for a little bit.. That clears the codes on most older cars. If not.. Maybe look for a vid on clearing the keep alive memory by jumping the battery cables BUT ONLY while at least one of them have been disconnected from the battery. Autozone used to read your codes for you until the pandemic but some workers tell you, store policy is, not to clear them because then the shop can't look at freeze frame data for troubleshooting afterwards. Ask if they could do it for you anyway if you turn your head... Just disconnect the battery for a few. if the temp gauge works, so will the AC

yo hektor great vid! my gfs 2008 honda fit is throwing this code ...it has no actual temp guage just a dummy light if it overheats .the cold circuit indicator (blue temperature signal )cuts off shortly after getting going down the road and the heater will blow hot air like it should .Could this still be a slightly stuck open thermostat or could it be CTS and how could i test before throwiong parts at it(i dont have a nice diagnostic tool like you have and the thermostat is a PAIN to get to)

Good video my friend. My sisters Colorado has the same symptoms. Guage always reads cold and the AC-off warning is showing on the cluster.
You did say in the beginning of your video that you didn't think it would be an open thermostat because the temp-gauge wouldn't budge and if it was an open thermostat the guage would have come up at least a little bit. So I think even you learned something from your video Hektor.
In any regards you posted a great video that will be helpful in my diagnosing my sisters Colorado.
    Thanks Homie!

Dex Cool (orange) although there's claims it gums up components and destroys gaskets. So there's a universal one either PINK or Yellow color. Some people also claim that Orange DexCool changes color to pink when you mix with distilled water. I also wonder if you're having a faulty water pump too... this is assuming that your thermostat and temp sensor that you just had replaced were working as they should. Sometimes some of the 3rd party parts are faulty too.

Same thing happened with my 2008 Tahoe. I replaced the CTS twice and I would turn on the heater or ac and it would shut off and kill the temp gauge. it ended up being a stuck thermostat

  • @jimwoody3056

My 2021 had same issue. Changed the thermostat and fixed the issue. Air conditioning worked. Temperature gage worked. Fans no longer ran constantly.
There must be an electrical sensor which tells computer to shutdown temp gage and air conditioner. Tells fans to run.
The thermostat is purely mechanical, not electrical. So, what is telling the computer to do what it does?
Where does the interaction occur between the thermostat and the computer?

What's up with the flickering lights on the stereo at about 19 seconds in? My Impala started having thermal housing/sensor issues a couple weeks ago, got a code about the temp being below the threshold. Yesterday, the gauges go haywire and the battery abs and airbag light come on while driving (Yes, I was steering left), and a very worrisome buzzing sound emanated from the entire dash beneath the windshield.
