Wow, Carol, you’re really making up for lost time😊. You’ve been so productive in just a short few days. I like your reasoning on the shape of the short jacket and think that might just what you’re looking for. Will be interested to see how it works out.
Hi Carol, so wonderful your semi retirement life is back. I think your bolero idea is fabulous and will definitely suit you - I also quite like the idea of the 3/4 sleeve on the knit version. This hopefully would give you enough coverage for the office plus of course allowing for the cold airconditioner in Summer. The long Harper cardigan will suit your trousers - I think that will be such an elegant look. Thank you for taking us along in your sewing journey. 🌸
Hi Polly. Owning Your Age is key. YAY! Tax season is done and now you can sew!!! I have long sweaters that come down to mid thigh and that is a great length for me. I want to make the Harper Cardigan. ❤
Ha - I was going to suggest a denim jacket to go with that dress, and then at the end there it was! I was thinking of a cream-color denim, though, or off-white. Wonderful that the busy season is over and you can have fun again. My husband is a CPA, mostly in the healthcare field, but for a few years he did public accounting. I took our kids roller skating, broke my arm, and I think everyone was surprised that he didn't rush to the hospital - he just couldn't! Luckily my sisters stepped in as I was there overnight for surgery - he did show up to get me home 😄. Yes, we're still married...but I don't roller skate anymore - sewing is safer!
I need to go shopping and try on some outfits and see what styles suit me. I currently don’t have time to sew because I have a new puppy. But he’s starting to sleep more, so maybe soon! I think another option for your dress would be a button up top that ties at the waist. Maybe that cute new Cashmerette club pattern. I made the Melody Dolman from Love Notions and really want to try the Cashmerette version. I just love the fabric you used for your dress! Fun video!
Hi Lynette! Oh my goodness!!!! A new puppy!!! 🐶🐕🦺 What breed or mix is your puppy? I admire anyone that has the patience and temperment to work with a puppy. He must be so cute! I just made the new Cashmerette pattern. I'm working on a video of it. I really like the pattern and will make several more, but I need to do a swayback adjustment to the pattern before I start on my next one. How did you like the Melody Dolman? Would you recommend that pattern?
@@pollysewsMy puppy is a Sheltie. He’s so cute but oh so much work! 😂 I do like the Melody Dolman but I want to try the Cashmerette pattern with the bust darts. I just watched your video where you showed yours. I think it looks fabulous!
I’ve missed you Carol! 😊 so happy tax season is over and you’re back to share your expertise with us. I do have long cardigans I enjoy wearing. When I wear them with dresses, I usually belt them with one of my wide stretch belts, which I have in a variety of colors. That makes me feel less frumpy. 😂 The bolero looks great with your dress! That style would definitely be my preference. Have great fun with your denim jacket sewing group! 😘
Thanks Sheena! I've seen a couple of Marcy Tilton patterns that look similar to the blouse I showed on my video. In fact, I think I have a pattern that is asymmetric on one side. All I would have to do is transfer it over to the other side. Thanks for the suggestion!
That first shirt reminds me of the yt channel 'the big sew along's style. I've been eyeing something similar it's called the Ruffle Shirt by Trend Patterns.
Hi Carol, Do you think the cardigans that you first made would look better if the sleeves were short or 3/4 length. They look heavy over the dress. That might be why you think they look frumpy. Also, the fabric might be just too heavy for the light fabric of the dress. I wish I could join you for the jacket Zoom meeting, but it would be mid-afternoon for me on a Friday. I wouldn't be able to do that. Sounds like fun though. Suzanne
Congrats on surviving the tax season! I wonder if the Cashmerette Westmore Cardigan (Waterfall front) might be a good option for your longer cardigan dilemma. The front would give softer lines and might work well with your dress, which I love by the way.
Hi Carol, I really enjoy your channel and hope to see you more now that tax season is behind you. Ha! I just had to jump on and suggest you get or make a Denim jacket. I couldn’t agree more, they are a great basic in your wardrobe. How about making a white denim jacket? I will say, all your trials with trying to find something to wear with your shift dress. The whole time you were trying different things with it I couldn’t help but think, what is the common denominator of this issue? The dress. It doesn’t have any real shaping at the waist therefore I’m not sure anything will help change the look. How about wearing a blouse under the dress? I would suggest a belt but I think it would pull the hem up too high? Have you thought about making (or maybe you already made) a shirt dress? That would give you a more defined waist in the future. Cashmerette has a great pattern, and shirt dresses look great with denim jackets. A few resources for the inspiration piece: check out Marcy Tilton patterns and Tina Givens patterns for that style. I also recommend a TH-cam channel MM Personal Styling, she’s great for ideas on how to pick the right proportions. 😊
Hi Karen! Yes, now that tax season is over I'm hoping to upload videos on a regular basis. I like your idea of a white denim jacket. I was actually thinking about making one! A couple of viewers have mentioned Marcy Tilton and I actually own one of her patterns that has an asymmetrical hemline on one side. If I flip it to the other side, I'd have a good start on the inspiration blouse. I've watched a couple of MM Personal Styling videos in the past, I should really watch more regularly. Do you watch her regularly?
@@pollysews I watch her in spurts. I think she does a good job pointing out small factors in outfits that make a world of difference. She frequently talks about having a white “t-shirt” under a topper of some sort and making sure to show a little of the white peeking out from the cuffs or hem of the topper. I definitively get value from some of her content and apply it to my styling. 😊
Carol, another comment.... I just got back from Joann Fabrics. They are having a sale on McCalls patterns. When I was looking thru the catalog, I saw a blouse pattern that looks much like the one you were looking for. The pattern number is M7751. Suzanne
Hey Suzanne! Yes! McCalls 7751 is great copy! Thanks for taking the time to tell me about it! And the sale too! Now I've got to go to Joann's and check out the McCalls patterns!
Yes, I agree! I need to shorten the sleeves on the white bolero sweater. Actually, I hadn't gotten around to doing the hem on it when I made the video. But know I know people notice so I'm going to be more diligent about doing all the finishing!
HI, Carol! Check out Style Falcon patterns. They're designed by an old woman for older women. Their patterns have a similar aesthetic to the lady's blouse you showed. X
Hi Diane! Thanks for suggesting Style Falcon! I checked out their website and plan on making a couple of their patterns. How did you learn about them? I mainly just looked at the patterns, but want to read more their site about their measurements and about their company. Thanks for the tip!
@@pollysews Oh, dear! I didn't mean to call the designer/owner of Style Falcon an "old woman"! I meant to type "...an OLDER woman for older women" LOL! I think I just stumbled across them through an Instagram or FaceBook ad. Maybe one of the ads that come up on my Gmail inbox. I don't think I've ever seen any YouiTuber or an Instagram posting about using their patterns. I do like the idea of how they design their patterns by making accommodations for how our bodies change as we age. Just not sure I can go full-on "older woman" vibe just yet. Oh, my vanity! :LOL!
regarding the bolero for the blue/violet dress: Either one of the white or beige small boleros are the right size. What if they were in the blue-velvet of the background color of the fabric? Possibly white jewelry around the neck. The bolero should be in a luxury fiber if possible. The large white jacket seems to be too much of a contrast; makes the outfit appear not well thought out. You did the right thing in taking pictures of yourself in the various candidate boleros over the dress. Too many large, loosely defined pieces of clothing make me feel like I'm a big cruise ship floating along.

By the sound of it your pup is excited about your project, too! Really enjoyed this video.
Thanks so much! Yes, little Ricco barks at everything/one. But I love him! 🐕🐶
I had to laugh when you said the combo reminded you of the Carol Burnett sketch.
Hi Polly. Owning Your Age is key. YAY! Tax season is done and now you can sew!!! I have long sweaters that come down to mid thigh and that is a great length for me. I want to make the Harper Cardigan. ❤

As a shorter person, longer cardi with pants, and short with shift dress. Also, def shorten the sleeves on the white bolero sweater.

I made Style Arc Kaye tunic. A bit tricky, but came out great.
Awesome Dee! I'll give that pattern a look. You've got me intrigued with "A bit tricky" lol!
There is a Butterick pattern that has a high center front and back with long sides . Does not have the pleats but take a look. It is B5786 Butterick.
Oh my goodness, Jan! That Butterick pattern is a perfect match! I think I might give it a try. Thanks for letting me know!
Ohhh, Itch to Stich patterns offer Full Bust options?

A Jean jacket might look nice.
I agree Gloria 👍 and I think I might make on this month- a white one.
V1970 may possibly be the pattern.
Hi Louisa! Yes, V1970 would definitely work. I like the vest option - I might try making that in the fall!
