    I'd like to really thank you for this video, specifically them eating the sand! I just rescued a 4" oranda after only ever having 2" small guys, I'd had gravel in my tank but replaced it with sand after reading her size may swallow the pebbles then saw her taking mouthfuls of the sand! I was worried so definitely thank you!

    Carpeting plants: BAD substrate!

    thanks for making this video! i just changed my substrate to sand and i was kinda worried the goldfish would suck up sand all of the time and the sand would get impacted in their guts. Im so glad to find out that that doesnt happen! I have a goldfish just like the gold one you have in this video! I love my goldies, theyre my fav kind of fish! they remind me of puppies lol, they beg for their food and they are just so cute! I love em!

    In my totes, I breed my Comets, therefore I use 55gal totes. I have one gravel; one bare; three sand. The gravel is by far the most work. And always, always when I'm done with water changes looks like should redo it. I like sand. I feel it works for my set up. Which is important to note: what works for me might not work very well for another keeper. I try to keep them clean, which makes me happy, and I watch them grow.

  • @Nine-Signs
    @Nine-Signs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To my mind, you need a substrate, for the sake of the goldfish. I get people don't think of goldish in any emotional way and neither did I but I was given a goldfish 7 years ago and this little bastard knows tricks. One of his favourites is sucking up water and firing it at his lid to let me know he's hungry, usually late at night just before bed. Memory of a goldfish indeed.

    Hi. I just switched from gravel to this sand today. I’m worried I took out too much good bacteria by removing the gravel. Should I do daily water changes? Also I’ve never been able to get my tank crystal clear like this in 6 years. Any tips? I use live bacteria in my tank when I do water changes and I only change it with distilled or purified water since my tap water is cloudy.

    Hi, I have a large Oranda (the largest I've have owed, about 5-6") I was using some "Large" gravel from my LFS and was doing fine till one day she got one lodged passed her mouth and had a hard time getting unstuck and really freaked me out. So I removed that and went bare bottom and my tank crashed... So I'm looking for a good substrate. I was trying to avoid sand due to the various common problems with hob filters etc. But bare bottom hasn't worked for me. How do you keep enough beneficial bacteria in a bare bottom to prevent it from crashing? It's a 29g with the LG Oranda and a small 2" one and a 2" black moor. With a penguin 350 hob.

    • @Aquariumswithty
      @Aquariumswithty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The penguin 350 will be enough. The reason your tank crashed is because when u removed the gravel, the gravel took the bacteria with its. That doesn’t mean that your penguin is full and doesn’t have space to support the bacteria for your current bio load. That filter in my opinion is overkill and will be enough. Just let the bacteria catch up

    • @nubnub9635
      @nubnub9635 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That may have been the problem, although the tank wasn't completely covered with gravel maybe less than a handful. But that may have been enough to throw off the balance. Thanks for the reply. What would you think a sufficient filter would be for the tank and fish I have? I was just using a 200 but got talked into upgrading thinking that was the cause of the crash. (Not enough filtration for the bio load) but if you say that's overkill, I'd take your advice over the tide pod eating help you find at your local chains...

      may i ask why?

    • @firstbourne8799
      @firstbourne8799 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually sand is the 2nd best substrate for goldfish. Goldfish like to forage for food, they can't do it on small gravel cause they would choke, big gravel traps food and poop easily, same for riverstones and pumice stones/lava rocks. Poop just sits on top of the sand, and that prevents any ammonia spikes when cleaning your tank as opposed to gravel or rocks, which is why it's the 2nd best with bare bottom being 1st. Now, may i ask where did you get your knowledge? Why do you think sand is the "lastest" thing, or should I say WORST, thing for goldfish? 😊
