  • Enjoy a throwback to our 2019 deep sea expedition near Jarvis Island (NA110) exploring within into Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRIMNM). Known as one of the least impacted tropical marine environments in the world, our Corps of Exploration witnessed some spectacular critters spanning the animal kingdom including bright-eyed Oreostomid dories, unusual blue Plexaurid corals, and an awe-inspiring swimming pelagic sea cucumber (Pelagothuria natatrix). From colonial siphonophores to solitary deep sea stingrays (Plesiobatus), enjoy the wonder of Jarvis with this highlight video.
PRIMNM is among the largest marine protected areas in the world but remains poorly explored due in part to the high percentage of the region that is extremely deep. Shallow-water environments in PRIMNM are home to abundant and biodiverse communities of fishes and coral and terrestrial environments are important habitats for seabirds. While the diversity of species in shallow waters is relatively well known, our expeditions to deeper waters are just beginning to uncover the complete biodiversity of this special place.

Funny thing about Siphonophores is that we actually dont know if they should be classfied as a single organism or a colony. They are a weird in between, where it is made of individual clones yet they are highly specialized like organs but you could remove one from the colony and it wouldnt die right away but it would eventually die due to the specialization...
They have traits of both colonies and a whole organism.

This was such fantastic footage. I still want to know what's up with that squid that had what looked like a siphonophore floaty on top of it. So crazy.

Can you post the clip from back in June of one fish catching another fish and then a third fish also wanting to eat it and then the little fish escapes them both? Or the fish staring at a seastar while the seastar tried eating an anemone?

Please as a future expedition go to central Philippines (Cebu/Mactan, Bohol/Panglao, Camotes islands and Balut/Sarangani Islands.) There are deep water invertebrate species (mollusks, echinoderms, glass sponges etc.) that are unknown in their natural habitats only from fishermen bringing them up with dredges and tangle nets. The depths are relatively shallow between 200 and 1000 feet. If I had the finances for an expedition that's where I would go.

Agree music is too loud. Younger ears do not realize what it’s like with older ears trying to distinguish words with ambient sound. Please tone the music down in the future- love the content, don’t ruin it for us.

not even an age thing, many many people, myself included, have a hard time processing audio when there's multiple signals coming in like this. I'm 24 and this is borderline unwatchable because I cannot focus on the speech with the music going. it's a shame, I was looking forward to this

Loud background music. I am literally unable to understand the running comment! Indeed it makes it a pain to watch! You can compare the effect with trying to talk to someone over the phone on a loud street crossing, while someone is yelling into your other ear. A suggestion: I understand that the music is intended to create an experience enhancing atmosphere. I observe on myself, that in videos which use videos only to introduce parts or emphasise highlights, paragraphs, etc., I maintain this atmosphere in the passages without or significantly reduced volume.
