    My personal opinion is that we need to give Scorsese's newer films more time before we can say whether or not they hold up against his older ones. In the ten years since The Departed came out, from my perspective, it seems like it has been getting more praise than it initially did. We call classic movies "classics" because they stood the test of time. I can't wait to see what people are saying about these films another decade or two down the line

      It's been maybe 15 years but honestly this is overrated AF. The middle of the film is basically the same as Infernal Affairs, but the first third of the film has so many jump cuts it ceases to be enjoyable.
      Even the part that basically leans heavily on Infernal Affairs isn't all that. Which is forgivable if it's original material but not when it's rehashing. This film deserves to be a lot better. Taking a strong concept like Infernal Affairs, you should be able to focus on what to add, but somehow this film mostly detracts.

      @@TequilaToothpick Though I’m not big on the Departed and find it a little nonsensical in places, I do quite like Infernal Affairs - the ending I find especially haunting and memorable (only seen the first one). I don’t think it’s a perfect film or anything, but can I ask why you dislike it?

      The Scorsese version is really overrated. Less of a film, more of a flickbook, if you can imagine the nightmare of being stuck watching a flickbook for two and a half hours!

    Mark has his opinion but it a beautifully poetic piece
    Martin goes back into his sand box and draws a cast together that match and stand tall against all his other
    great pieces be they knights or rooks .
    The king here though is the masterful Jack Nicholson
    who with De caprio Damon Wahlberg Farmiga Baldwin Sheen and Ray Winstone to name few , all act their socks off to the direction of Scorcese whom they clearly love ,
    and why not, his movies are the who's who of brand name
    films .
    This movie stands along side those movies with ease
    with gritty emotional tense performances and it's hard to find any actor who fails to deliver .
    Mark kermode wasn't phased because he is immune but
    modern classic is a good way to describe this movie .

    great film. It's no Infernal Affairs, and it's certainly no Goodfellas, Mean Streets etc. but I did like it. There's plenty in it that to me was clearly played for laughs. Wahlberg was very funny I think. I would say though that Matt Damon and Leo DiCaprio were the only character's that seemed "real" to me
    I agree that it is Martin Scorcese light and I certainly do't think it's a masterpiece but it is a very decent film. However if you really liked this you'd love Infernal Affairs
    :)

    You know what's kinda weird about the movie the 'Good Shepherd' is that there are a few questions that go unanswered throughout the movie and there are no videos on TH-cam that shed light on them. At the very least you could surmise that the questions are answered in a subtle fashion where only a few select people could understand. Specifically, people in the intelligence community could pick up on. Hopefully someone will create a video on TH-cam and give us some more insight on some of the plot twists in the movie.

    Di Caprio and Damon struggle a bit compared to the giant shadows of Andy Lau and Tony Leung, but Mark Wahlberg in a new role created for The Departed steals the show and is the single I slightly favor this over the original.

    It wasn't really a remake though. It was a basis at the most. It's a great film. Everyone is great. They used that and used Whitey Bulger and the Irish mob as the focus. This well isn't a remake

    • @Funglutton
      @Funglutton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's 1000% a remake. You can take scenes from the original and basically overlay them to this film.
      The differences are 50 minutes which add nothing and the fact the main characters share the same girlfriend/psychiatrist which is stupid as hell. In other words it's worse.
      Yeah it's based in Boston instead of Hong Kong but what do you really learn about Irish mafia from that era? Zero. Just the same Drop Kick Murphies song played on repeat to paste over the cracks. It's a pathetic performance from a director who's capable of so much more.

  • @WAAAAAAAAAAAY
    @WAAAAAAAAAAAY 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree - Infernal Affairs is a far better and more interesting, edgy movie. That's kind of what i was getting at
    "The Departed is more Shutter Island than Goodfellas" - that's a good point too. I've watched again quite recently & I still enjoyed it on the level of pure hilarious over the top acting [i still think Wahlberg is really funny in this]. I think the nuttiest, campest perfrmance is actually Nicholson's.
