I don't believe this has ever been confirmed as autobiographical, however, Lana has always said she sings and writes about the things she knows. I just knew you'd say this was a "false freedom" lol of course, you're right, all things considered. But I'm sure for people like her, this was freedom, at that age and head space of the time, "no moral compass pointing due north, no fixed personality". Lana defined my early 20s and I've more or less grown up with her, now as a women in our 30s, I'm happy to say life has gotten a lot better, and hers seems to as well. You'll see that in the most recent albums, as Ride was from 2012. She is a sad girl at heart, I think, and I relate to that but she said more recently that regardless of what she's singing about, she IS happy now.
