Fantastic video, Dave ! The NIK collection still is one of the best presets & finetuning tool. I like grain, and I already have it, as I'm using the legendary bnw Mono-Profile 2 of my Olympus Pen-F while shooting. Outstanding film noir simulation.
Wow. This video shows me I'm only using a small part of this programme and subsequently missing out on so much. Thanks Dave. Best wishes from a very cold and snowy UK 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Great video. I have Photoshop CS5 and elements 12 (which have NIK collection in them) but I can't load them onto my laptop. Downloading the trial tonight.
Before; and In this context and I had some noise in the pictures I worked with (in NIK SILVER EFE) - then I put on grain to hide the noise. And remember the possibility of being able to combine several different versions of its results via masks in Photoshop. It´s also my top filter!
Thanks Dave. Grain? For me it depends if I am going to finish in an old style and will play around to get what I want. If the picture is to be in a modern style, then I tend to leave it out. All the best. Take care.
just found your channel. i guess you can ignore my question from ur other post you answered it here. 2/3rd of my edits are bw of flowers thanks for showing ur workflow hope to see more of colr and bw!!
Can the free and full version of nikcollection be downloaded to-day? I had it but lost due to hard disk corruption of my computer. Can u pl.give the link of free version(2012)🙏
The new Silver Efex Pro just released has a glitch. It won't open 16-bit files in Widows 10. You get an error message that says "disk full" when it's not.
I would say it is more of a contrast increase targeting the darkest darks and lightest lights. I love high contrast black and white photographs and the amplify black and amplify whites really works extremely well in giving you a high contrast image.
nice tuto. which software did you use for the beautiful frame ? topaz ai frame ? i am using sep since its creation. Just a pity it didn't evolve with graduated filter (not burn edges) and radial filter for dodge and burn, a content aware brush (20 upoints is sometimes tedious), create categories to sort presets from different vendors, a tool to boost color without requiring a first pass in viveza if we didn't saturate colors enough or used wrong white balance before launchig sep. I mean mainly from lightroom (which, by the way is non destructive now). In photoshop you can use smart object and navigate back and forth. But today in photoshop, you have b&w filter and gradient map with camera raw filter to dodge and burn but also professional LUT so i am using less and less sep.
@@marclabro there’s a whole selection of frames to be found in the Finishing Adjustments menu under sub menu Image Borders. Look hard and you’ll find them all as I did ✌️
@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Yes, playing around with it now, option paralysis like with any software but i can see how its useable and that you probably find your own workflow after a while
I love grain, but nothing mimics the randomness of grain on silver paper developed in darkroom, ( randomly more in highlights, low in shadows), no algorithm so far can mimic it.
Love watching your videos and I learn a lot from them but I have a question. I use Capture One Pro 20 for Fuji and Luminar 4. Can SilverEfexPro be used with either or both products?
Thanks Jerry. I don't know about Capture One but I know you can run Silver Efex from a Mac while using Luminar 4, not sure about a PC. The latest version of Luminar, Luminar Ai does not support plugins.
Dave, you packed a whole lot of good information into 18 minutes! You have a gift for teaching and clear, concise explanations! Nice work, and thanks!
Great tips Dave. Silver EFEX pro is a fav of mine. And yes, I like grain.
Thanks Jim. I am a big fan of grain. 🙂

You’re welcome David. I hope you start to use it, it is a great piece of software.

Excellent video Dave - I need to use this package more.....not got into it yet but your intro to Silver FX pro shows just how powerful it is
It is my favorite way of doing Black and White. Thanks Nigel.
Full of Super tips. Great tutorial. Perfect timing, I was just starting to convert some snow photos to black and white.
Awesome and thanks Stephen.

Would you tell us how you did the frame and what dimensions the mat and frame are? Thanks.

You’re welcome Edwin and thanks for the feedback.
Are you planning any NIK 6 videos? I upgrade from 4 to 6 and wonder on the improvements. Especially SXP and CEP. Thanks
I am planning to do them.

Why don't I have dynamic brightness on mine?
You should have it.

How about using it as a stand alone ap?
Yes you can.
(... and I can warmly recommend NIK Perspective Efex)

great!
Would you say that using the "amplify blacks " and " amplify whites " sliders is actually a kind of dodging and burning?
I would say it is more of a contrast increase targeting the darkest darks and lightest lights. I love high contrast black and white photographs and the amplify black and amplify whites really works extremely well in giving you a high contrast image.

The frame setting is within SE itself…✌️
at 4min (in preset) yes but final one at 18min looks to be topaz one

The presets look like cheap insta or even instamatic filters imo. But i suspect you can get great result by adjusting it manually.
They are a good starting point but I like to make my own adjustments, after all that is the joy of editing.

Grain in some images, but not for most.
Interesting but too expensive ..
Thanks for viewing. Don’t forget you get more than Silver Efex, you get the entire NIK Collection.
