  • Garrard Conley, author of Boy Erased, talks about surviving ex-gay therapy, Troye Sivan, the cultural importance of Mommie Dearest and how he doesn't feel like a victim in this amazing interview. Subscribe for more LGBTQ+ content: goo.gl/bdtZLo

Garrard Conley's memoir, Boy Erased, is about his time going through gay conversion therapy when growing up as a christian son of a minister in the American South. The book is being released as a Hollywood film later this year. Garrard is being played by Lucas Hedges, the film also stars Troye Sivan, Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman. Apparently people can smell Oscars!
I think this is a hopeful interview, even though Garrard went through something so difficult. He is living proof that you can come through the end of something like the ex gay movement and not just survive, but thrive.

Very long and drawn-out conversation. What we really needed to know was what his background was and what the conversion therapy actually consisted of. What we had instead was an extended period of two men flirting with each other. That's not to say that the conversation was not interesting - it's just it would have been better to set the scene very clearly and chronologically comparing thoughts and feelings of experiences at the time to the recollection in hindsight.

This is really a super interesting conversation, that seems very casual, but us actually really informative and in lack of a better word .. deep

7:54 - "It takes a gay to ask the right questions." - Garrard Conley has several fantastic quotations, but this one is near the top. And we are going to be holding him to his editor saying those scenes are for "another book" (8:25).

Since I first watched this hot interview (sorry!), I read the book and made use to order it with just that cover.
And I think called it a "harrowing read' somewhere, because it sounded appropriate and something people would want to hear.
Sure enough I got quite a few up votes, but to be honest I laughed (silently while my soul was doing the weeping. Like the paid mourners on a pharaoh's burial. I was tearing my hair, goddammit!) an inappropriate amount of the time I read it.
It *is* funny, which doesn't take away any of the serious matter of the topic.
By the way, the cover of that edition stains very easily.

Ookey let's get heavy in there, because it's my reality?
I'm HIV positive (and doing very greatly, thank you very much!) and I was always totally open about it in the neighbourhood where I used to live (ok, I was outed, clocked, whatchit by my "community?'
An acquaintance of mine beat me in the face for saying "Hi"' to him.
Police arrived, several straight friends testified, but I didn't prosecute.
    Such a hassle...

They act like he was in a concentration camp. The fact that he mentions a comparison of these places to Nazis. Just dramatic and too much.

    • @robertjazz3613

Well go to a conversion therapy and see how its like maybe? Many young gay youth have been sent to conversion therapy where many have commited suicide, is it on the level of voncentrayion camps obviously no but is this a big issue that still exist today yes.

    • @whatiwasgoingtosay
      @whatiwasgoingtosay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

NYCGirl Rdu There are thousands of people still caught up in these conversion camps. And they’re responsible for a lot of suicides. It’s not exactly not Nazi-like.
