  • I do a basic and quick run through on points installation and setting on an IH 304. Advice also applies to IH 266, 345, 392 engines. don't forget to tighten the screws when all done!

    Hey Dan, I like your explanation of how to gap the points. I hope you have another movie on setting timing that I will look for next. Just a comment on how I remember things... the breaker points are there to break the primary low tension circuit. When that happens the field collapses in the ignition coil inducing a voltage in the secondary high side which jumps to ground at the electrode of the spark plug. Timing is critical. The condensor absorbs the primary side voltage spike created by the opening points breaking the circuit, condensor also can be thought to provide a clean break yielding a clean spark. They absorb the current so there is no arcing at the point gap and no burning and erosion of the points contact surfaces. That is my layman's understanding of the process. Sidenote, with my old yard trucks, I use a points file instead of other abrasives to leave a clean contact surface without harmful residue other type abrasives leave behind. The reason I have to clean my points is probably because my condensor got damaged by moisture or poor connections to ground. If it was doing a perfect job there wouldn't be much need to clean.

    Thought I’d clear it up: on Kettering ignitions(points) the condenser increases the life of the points by reducing sparking across the gap. The ignition coil itself stores the energy in between spark pulses in the form of magnetic fields, which collapse and cause spark when the points open and the voltage tries to drop to zero but can’t because of aforementioned magnetic fields.

    Actually the closer the gap, the more time the coil has to charge and make a stronger spark. The time they are closed is call "dwell". More dwell is better. Back in the day, high performance engines had dual point distributors for more dwell. Ideally, the best way to set the point gap is with a dwell meter. Some digital multi meters have a dwell function. The meter measures how long the points are closed.
