  • Reviewing my first Grand Seiko Entry level Spring Drive.
    A very elegant time piece.
    I bought this watch at a A.D in Houston TX, not wanting to disclose the store’s name as I’m not paid to advertise in any shape of form.
    I must say as a watch enthusiast, this watch is amazing and there is nothing out there that can be compared to. It’s unique on its own way. A MUST HAVE WATCH.
    Here is the website with a more accurate description:

    The sweeping movement of the second hand from springdrive is worth all the money. Its silent sophistication. Impress yourself rather than others.

  • @chelious1973
    @chelious1973 4 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    You just don't understand what you have. GS makes the watch bracelet thinner for comfort, thus making it light on purpose. Everything they do has a purpose. Nothing is by mistake. I personally like the Spring Drive, think its the best out there currently. Preferance.
    These are handmade watches. Rolex and Omega are not. Tudor is not in the same league as GS.
    Its just a Japanese watch’? You say? Those Japanese watches embarrassed the Swiss at the Swiss time competitions for accuracy so much they got rid of the competition by cancelling the competition entirely so Seiko couldn’t embarrass then further.
    Buy a Rolex to impress others, buy a GS to impress yourself”.
    Just calling it a Seiko is like calling a Lexus a Toyota. You wouldn't think that after buying a Lexus would you? Why would you a GS? GS craps all over Rolex in the build dept. As far as GS goes they are a seperate company from Seiko now. GS is a seperate company under the Seiko umbrella. Like Lexus is to Toyota.
    Educate yourself and your appreciation of the company will change.

      The Time Collector. I appreciate the video👍 I was also taken aback on the lightness of my GS. The lightness comes strictly from the thin links on the bracelet. Nothing else. I have a 214270 Explorer and two omega and the finishing on those two can't compare. Even though I like my Explorer and Omega just as much. I do notice the finishing differences. Enjoy your GS, that is a stunner of a piece!

    • @TheTimeCollector
      @TheTimeCollector  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The finish on the GS is awesome, it is a beautiful piece indeed. I’m just used to robust diver watches and I’m trying to enjoy different types of watches, the more I wear the GS the more I get to appreciate it for what it is.

      The spring drive movement is an all mechanical movement. The integrated circuit applies an electromagnet brake to the mechanical movement to keep correct time. If anything it's more of a mechanical than a "normal" mechanical watch, as not only does it power the watch movement, but also powers the IC / quartz as well.

    Luckily my AD still has one as the SBGA285 is now discontinued. Just got it today. Having owned a SARB033/35 and Presage Sharp Edge SARX083 in black, and SARX055, the mirror polish of the GS is exquisite. Also, the second hand sweep is just wow. At 39mm, the size is perfect for a modern dressy sport watch. I'm planning to consolidate my collection to get the champagne dial SBGA283 before it's gone. This review helped my decision. Thanks.

    I've owned lots of watches in my life and the conclusion is that a real quality watch should feel very comfortable on the wrist. So it shouldn't be too heavy or your wrist just aches. Grand seiko only make quality pieces with great attention to detail 👌

    I have a Grand Seiko Snowflake 211, I brought it last year towards the end of summer. I don’t regret the purchase and wear it every chance I get. It’s worth every penny, and regardless of who notices, it’s for my pleasure. Enjoy your watch.

    • @TheTimeCollector

  • @manuel_winde
    @manuel_winde 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I had the previous version-sbga085- and loved it. My only reason for selling, which won’t make sense to normal/non watch geeks is that it was too perfect and while it makes sense for someone who wanted 1 watch to wear in all situations... for me I like having variation in my small collection. This watch is smart enough to be a dress watch (on a leather strap), reliable and robust enough for daily wear, it’s water proof and casual yet has immaculate finishing and it’s eye catching but low key.
    I regret selling it and am now considering the champagne dial but also like the Explorer which is twice the price and more casual. Doesn’t make sense to get the Rolex Explorer but nothing in this hobby does!
    Thanks for your video anyway and enjoy your great watch

      Fat-Sam FatSamEIE I agree with you, definitely understand where you coming from, this watch by all means to me is not an everyday watch, I rather find myself wearing it at work since I’m a casino host, but other than that it’s not like I’m going to wear this with sports clothing or go hunting on it Hahah. I will buy a more sportier GS in the future. But I am content with it, at the moment I have few offers that will not put me on the negative but this watches are very available. My upper hand is that I live far from the GS AD so lots of friends are asking me to sell it haha

    WOW! You're definitely a very skilled buyer to get a Grand Seiko spring drive automatic movement for under four thousand dollars. • @watchnerds
    @watchnerds 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For a watch lighter than you think, you perhaps take a look on Bvlgari or Piaget ultra thin watches as the thickness of the watch really affect the overall weight of it. Or different materials such as ceramic like rados, omegas, Hublot, Blancpain, etc. or titanium watches like from tissot, omega, De Bethune, patek philippe, grand seiko, Richard mille, mb&f, etc. or carbon cased watch like Hublot, Zenith, Tag Heuer, HYT, Richard mille, etc. or sapphire watch like hublot, Richard mille, girard perregaux, Greubel Forsey, chanel, etc.
    Tried them all before, they weight like nothing. But idk, I prefer watches that had substantial weight to it.

      @@TheTimeCollector but if you love some heft (with the same heft tag as well) you can try and/or buy the Lange 31 in platinum, or Omega Ploprof in platinum with platinum bracelet. I guarantee you even more big guns if you worn both of them in both wrist.

      @@TheTimeCollector Tbh, any watches that had a big dimension with the case made out of platinum complete with solid platinum bracelet and some with gold movement as well are generally could hurt someone if you throw it at them.
      You would be surprised to try how heavy was it to wear an FP Journe PT case with rose gold movement inside despite how slim they generally are. And then one of the heaviest movements ever made (from german silver), Lange 31, complemented with the platinum case feels like a brick. AP ROO in platinum with platinum bracelet or rolex Daytona platinum with its bracelet are very heavy. Harry Winston Opus and Histoire De Tourbillon series are hefty. And finally, Julien Coudray (independent watchmaker), which handmade both the watch movement and case out of solid block of platinum into his watch. Although I never tried these before, but I think grand complication watches from Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe (ie, their Grand Chime) in platinum or gold are very substantial enough to make your daily arm workout.
      Though if I had those money I'll probably choose a steel Patek, or a complicated Cartier, a Breguet, an Urwerk, a MB&F, Agenhor creations (mainly Van Cleef Arpels manly watches), De Bethune, or Bovet Amadeo.

Keep on trading them to satisfy those cravings. I would never wear 60 watches haha some of them I haven't wear in a year or so.

    ..."just a Japanese watch"? Really? They almost put the Swiss watch industry out of business...they're that good. Dude - you shouldn't have bought it if you weren't sure. Buy a watch for yourself & not what anyone else tells you or thinks - big mistake. You look like you need to pay a HUGE premium for a ROLEX & then tell all your friends about it....I think GS are gaining a huge following for a reason & SD is one of the most technical innovations for a very long time - apart from different case/bracelet materials (ceramic, titanium etc.)

    This is the best reference of spring drive in my opinion, great taste man. And mate the band width is 201mm according to the website ( www.grand-seiko.com/us-en/collections/SBGA285G ) did you measure it yourself?

      James Pålsson i think the band perimeter is the length of it not the width of it. 201mm of length of 201mm sounds more appropriate?? I have to verify that. But I got the measurements from a different source not the website. And no I didn’t do it myself

    Why doesn't this watch have display case back? For me, it's a no-go, because it deprives the enjoyment of looking the movement.

    • @TheTimeCollector
      @TheTimeCollector  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I totally agree with you on this one, just keep in mind that this is the entry level Spring drive. In order to keep the movement at cost they sacrifice the view.
      I was not really looking into a back showcase display to be frankly honest with you due that I couldn't find a justification at the moment on spending that much on a Seiko, so now that I am well aware of Grand Seiko and what they stand for, I'll probably end up buy the snow flake dial later.

    • @altbinhax
      @altbinhax 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a preference, and I now like not having a display caseback as I mostly wear the watch and my appreciation for the movement comes from seeing the sweep of the seconds hand.

    Swiss watches are like german cars just an overpriced dog shit in a shiny marketing envelope. Asians still have some honor left in their hearts to actually create good products. I'm a big Rolex fan since the first time I saw one and GS is the only brand that gives the same or better quality feeling without beeing a price ripoff. Also nobody knows what it is which is important in my job to not catch any attention

    I have bought a skyflake which I don’t wear. I find it too light. I like to know I’m wearing a watch with some weight. My other watch is a submariner and it feels much better. Impulse buy at a good price but it’s in the box and sits in a drawer. Shame really.

    Seiko has demonstrated (again) that they are better than swiss at maling watches...by your comment on "still a Japanese watch", it seems like you care more about the brand that about the actual product you bought. That GS, unlike many swiss counterparts, is worth all the money you paid for it.

      Thank you Tim I appreciate your sub, By all means I respect your opinion here as we are all different and we have different taste.
      I must say as I mentioned on the video it was very hard for me to leave the cash on the counter for this watch specially because I was very ignorant of the brand and all I saw before buying was nice reviews on the snow flake and such. But I wanted to have movement in my collection and I wanted to experience the hype.... and let me tell you, the hype is real, the watch is indeed superb. I can see the worth and value of it now. But it is hard to swallow the fact that your are paying that much money for a Seiko.
      In all I do like the brand and I will buy another in the future. But your choice is a really good one, I love the Omega Speedmaster professional and this watch will be the next big purchase I make.
