Hi everybody, and welcome to another digital piano review at the Merriam Pianos TH-cam channel. Today, we’re taking a look at the Casio PX-870.
This is a popular model in the $1,000-$2,000 price category that’s been on the market for about a year or so. It’s a new product for us however so we’re excited to do a deep dive for you here.

Piano Overview:
The PX-870 sits at the very top of Casio’s Privia lineup. The Privia lineup has been quite successful for Casio over the past few years, and I’ve personally been very impressed with the overall musical potential these instruments offer, especially for the price.
I had high hopes for the PX-870, and I’m happy to report that it doesn’t disappoint. This piano delivers very nicely for the price point, with a great sound and solid touch.
Piano Sound:
With a tone generator capable of 256 note polyphony, 40 watts of speaker power and a multidimensional sample, the overall piano sound you’re getting here is definitely among the top in it’s class. There’s 19 total on-board sounds here, and the overall quality is quite impressive, on par with what you’ll find in a similarly priced Kawai or Roland. I would still say the main acoustic piano tones on a similarly priced Kawai or Roland captures some of the subtleties of acoustic piano tone more accurately, but it’s very close.
Overall, there's a lot of character and warmth to the main piano sample here, and navigating the various samples is easy with a subtle sort of cheat sheet built right into the instrument.
The other samples here are solid with only a few misses, including other piano patches, E pianos, harpsichord, organs. All in all, this piano really delivers a satisfying tone, and might be the least expensive piano in its class with 40 watts of speaker power.
Piano Action:
Casio’s tried a few things with their actions over the past few years, some of which were successful and others which were somewhat odd. That said, I think they’ve been moving in a good overall direction, with a well built, satisfying piano action.
The PX-870 uses a triple sensor action for good accuracy (88 Note Tri-sensor Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard II), though it does not feature escapement (Roland is the only manufacturer who offers escapement at this price point.)
There’s a texture on the white and black keys that is pretty exaggerated. Some folks will love this, others will not, so it’s definitely worth paying attention to that when you try this piano out to see if you like the texture.
It’s worth mentioning that the action here is not the same as the one you’ll find in the PX-S1000 and 3000, which only use a double sensor.
Piano Features:
There’s some interesting features you’ll find in the PX-870, and while not really unusual for the price point, are still worth noting. There’s recording capability (MIDI and Audio to USB), built in songs that allow you to play along with or just listen to, along with compatibility with Casio’s Chordana Play app. Especially with a tablet, there’s a lot of different cool, interactive things you can do with this app.
The PX-870 includes a built in stand, dust cover, and triple pedal system, along with a nice music desk. It does not include a bench, so keep that in mind from a budget perspective. There isn’t any Bluetooth capability, but you can connect to devices with a USB cable. There’s also two headphone jacks, and the other basic features are covered as well, such as a metronome, transpose, octave shift, layer and split. The cabinet is well built, and fits together in a very secure manner.
Summary:
Compared to other instruments on the market, we’ve got both a piano tone and action here that are above average, great speakers, and a well made, durable cabinet. If you’re in that $1,500 or so price range, this is definitely a model worth checking out.

I just started playing for a church. My first "gig" ever you could say. The last piano I bought was a px160, it's served me well but is kind of dated and the speakers are going. Your videos have so informative. I'm looking to upgrade to the next level but not break the bank. You can never find the ones in stores to play you want. You're videos have been the most thorough and well done on TH-cam. Keep it up!

My PX-110 that I received over 20 years ago as a gift for me and then me to my kids just broke down and no parts (2003,2023) Anything better than this wonderful, faithful model would be well received by me!!! My heart is still broken when this happened.
I am so sorry to hear that! With that said, it sounds like your PX110 served you well musically for a great number of years. The new PXS models (PXS1100, PXS3100, PXS5000, PXS6000, PXS7000) are wonderful instruments, which I would highly recommend exploring if you're looking for a replacement.

I'm paying to have one transcribed, and we don't know if it's an actual song or just something coming off the top of Stu's head. Whatever the case it's very nice.
Really great review, very comprehensive analysis of the many factors needed to assess these types of machines. I'll be using you to peruse this whole area as I am thinking of going this direction to add to my synth aresenal because my intuition that you're a good reviewer already has me in terms of trusting a judgement.
According to Casio, the grilles on the top of the instrument do contain speakers; they're not just ports to the back of the downward firing speakers. 4 speakers in total, two firing up, two firing down.
Another instrument to consider is the Casio PX-560. This is a stage piano with incorporated speakers. It sells for about the same price as the PX-870, includes all the instruments in the 870 plus several hundred more, includes over 200 rhythms, the same tri sensor action, the same sound engine, a 17 track recorder, full 5 pin din MIDI, full USB MIDI, touch sensitive color screen navigation, and a bunch more features. I own a 560, and it truly is one of the finest instruments Casio makes. Would love to hear your take on the instrument. >Charlie
Sounds interesting for sure. Do you happen to know if the action on the 560 has a considerably better action than the 160. I play a 150 which is very noisy on the uplift or return of the the key when it tops out.

Regarding ployphony, I have a Yamaha P-150 stage piano from the 90s with 32 note polyphony. And, it actually is perfectly fine for the most part.

Love your channel! I also loved my (ancient?) Casio PX-330 and used it for many gigs, both solo and jazz trio when I lived in NYC. Wish I could find one in Tokyo..(I don't care for the S1000 form factor and PX360/560's are impossible to find.) Besides not being portable, this 870 doesn't sound as good to my ears.
you probably wont answer to this since this video is a year old almost but i want the best action 1000€ can buy, which digital piano would you recommend? i dont really care about sound or features its all about the action.

This is the piano I am going to get as my first piano that will get me up and running and to intermediate to advanced level in the coming years until I get a new upright acoustic one. Those guys are too expensive new and require maintenance and can get bangged up and damaged on the way and they don't really allow you to practice with headphones on and control the volume unless it's a Yamaha silent which again is over 5 thousand dollars.
I plan on getting this as my first piano & I'm a complete beginner. Is this a bit overkill? I heard that home digital pianos will always be superior to portable keyboards. Please get back to me.
@@DanyaalShaozab i wouldn't know to be honest. I have just as much, if not less, information about pianos as you do. But anything portable is always not as feature-rich because they have to cut corners.

I want to know if you can play two different tones at the same time e.g. grand piano and strings. I could do that on my old piano but can’t seem to get this one to do it

I managed to get away with just plugging in and recording, might depend on what file format your drive is in beforehand though. The sound came out a bit quiet but I amplified it with Audacity and it sounds good.
How does this compare with the AP-710?

get a Kawai ES110 ... much better at everything.
avoid the pxs 1000 and 3000 because the keyaction is not good for pianists. only the black keys are weighted

@@GrotrianSeiler agree. I have the s3000 and it has 5 levels of touch response to suit individual needs. I switch mine depending on the piece im playing and it does make a difference. It just takes a bit getting used to compared to the normal acoustics. I have a Young Chang with heavier keys. My parents know nuts about pianos when they bought it for me like 35yrs ago and i just have my lessons happily playing it. After years at the YC, all other pianos are a breeze with their lighter touch, lol.

Why don't they just put the speakers facing up? There seems to be a war going on against that.
Only down side about most Casio digital pianos is the keyboard noise they make. Whilst the review is great, you all should try to have hand on the piano you're looking to purchase. I was convinced that the PX-870 was the one until I listened very carefully looking for the key noises, and as I expected, I was able to hear them. I'll have to pay my local Piano Shop a visit to make a decision. Thank you for the great review.
Helpful review. Question: Does this allow for one to connect to say a Mac running GarageBand or Logic to use some of the instruments found in those apps? Effectively becoming a MIDI like keyboard?
We're glad to hear that it was helpful! Any digital piano, including the PX870, that has MIDI output capabilities via MIDI or USB connections can be used as a MIDI controller to control VST instruments within programs like GarageBand or Logic. :)

Can PX 870 combine sounds?
I love the px 670 four layer sample …I also love the tr sensor 2 action ….. BUT what stage piano would you say comes closest in action and 4 layer sample quality? Any make will do as long as it’s portable .

There are a lot of great stage pianos out there, each with their own strengths, so it is a difficult question to answer without a bit more info about the specific player and their experiences. With that said, I am personally a huge fan of the Kawai MP series. Coming from an all plastic key action, you might very much enjoy and connect with what the MP7SE has to offer. With that said, I am personally a huge fan and advocate of the MP11SE and its Grand Feel all wooden action. It is one of the most responsive touches I have ever found in a portable stage piano package. Hope this helps! :)

@@alexp2082 yes it works great now. I needed to get a new "lightning cable" it's got a USB B connection that plugs into the piano and then a regular computer USB A connection that plugs into the computer. Then ableton is able to use it as a MIDI input without any latency issues and it works great!
This or AP-470?
Well, ap470 is better but availability is scarce. That’s the one I wanted for Christmas, but it’s out of stock everywhere. Plus there’s an extra $500 to consider, ap470 does cost more.

re. @thepianoforever: I'm still not sure what to make of him. The fellow did have a point regarding the weight of the keys of a particular model (not featured in this video by Merriam Music) and for me it would definitely be a deal-breaker - even though I'm nowhere near being a professional player. Still, JPS ruffled a lot of feathers; perhaps it's the manner in how he made his point, language, gestures etc..
@@KeepingOnTheWatch I agree that JPS has a point, he has proved objectively. But is this really a big deal when you consider its price range and the target audience? It would have mattered if Kawai CA 99 or Roland LX 708 had a similar issue, but for an entry level Casio, I am not so sure. I am an upper intermediate classical amateur and I happen to own a low end Casio portable, to take it to our summer house. It is not a grand action, but it is definitely better than not playing for 4-5 weeks I stay there.
@@aliar11 Good point. He could've simply stated the issue (which is true) and then just moved on without emphasizing this too much. As well, if he used gram-weights to prove his point he could've used the same technique on other digitals as well. His example made me wonder about other models and raised more questions than I had answered. Anyway, I wondered if he ever received a knock on the door by corporate men in black suits. At the end of the day I still enjoy watching JPS' videos.
@@KeepingOnTheWatch i do enjoy watching him too. I love to watch his enthusiasm when he is reviewing, for sure all he has is good intentions. Maybe I shouldn't forget that he is a very talnted person and a very young one too - probably he, himself, wouldn't make a big deal out of this issue had he shot these videos in his mid thirties. Having said that, Stu is at another level and I enjoy his videos sooo much. For me, his videos are simply the best reviews out there and I adore how he plays the piano.

Imho, the pha4 action in Roland is far superior than this one. If we take Kawai actions as reference, pha4 is closer to RHA3, on the other hand, I would say Casio's action is closer to the responsive hammer compact action as found in kdp 70 and es110.

@@ferdearmas8732 i think both are top notch plastic actions (you need to upgrade to wood/ part wood actions for anything better than these). You need to test them for yourself and see which one you like better. Personally, I find rh3 slightly more fluid than pha4 but I am splitting hairs really. Btw, I am planning to buy Roland FP10 myself to replace my night time practice instrument, Casio Cdp-135. Cheers.

The PX870 has an onboard recorder! There is actually record button on the control interface, so it is very easy to do. :)

Casio middle keys sound like toy😭
I'm tired of hearing about escapement on digitals It may exist, but it's meaningless in terms of the tone production. On the Kawai, it's just a silicone rubber nub passing across a detente. It's an illusion and has nothing to do with the sound. You can't feel it on a good grand, so why bother with it on a digital? It's just something that will eventually wear out. What I am interested in is how well any instrument actually interfaces musically with professional virtual piano and synth voices. In other words how well does it drive something like Pianoteq or other profesional sample libraries.
Escapement is basically an unwanted design feature in acoustics. Just like the sound of the dampers lifting off the strings when the pedal is pressed is unnecessary but it's recreated in some digitals (ie. my Roland LX-7)
@@KeepingOnTheWatch Dampers lifting off and setting down are audible. As far as I know escapement is not. Here's a video that shows the excapement process:

Once the hammer hits the string it falls back a short distance from the string, and the jack is reset. For those who who do not know pianos well, it may be hard to see, but the hammer only strikes a blow and does not remain in contact with the string. Stu has pointed out that what you feel on an acoustic is the jack sliding out from under the knuckle when the key is pressed at slow speed and when key hits bottom, there will be no sound. The only way escapement can be valid on a digital is if the key will no longer sound once the key passes the escapement point at slow speed. Maybe some of the high end digitals work this way, but any digital I have owned doesn't. Finally on a Yamaha KX-88 the velocity units jump by 10 so the alleged 128 levels of velocity are only 12, not truly 128. That's why I want to hear how these various keyboards are able to musically drive high end virutal pianos that reside on a computer.
By the way, acoustic pianos are completely analog, not digital at all. That's probably why they are still preferred from a musical expression point of view.
You're entitled to your opinion, but Stu, among other professional pianists, don't seem to agree with you. I've heard Stu remark on more than one of his videos that the simulated escapement makes it easier to play soft passages. I also rather doubt that the manufacturers would bother with including it on all their high-end actions if it didn't have some value and was a feature wanted by their customers.
Again, it's fine if you don't care for it, but just don't pretend your opinion is some objective truth.
sounds more like a toy than a grand piano. ES110 is a fat better instrument.
I don't know how you can call this a "review" when you're also trying to sell the product. Why should I trust you?
He might look like an average salesperson to you, trying to fool you into a random purchase which he is getting a commission for.
