They are like a sales tax that WE pay, because they are levied on goods by the federal government when they arrive HERE, not when they leave the factory or the shipping port in the country of origin. In 1964, my father bought a new VW in Germany. Later, he shipped it home when we returned to Boston. We went to the dock to pick up the car. Before they released the car to my father, he had to pay a tariff on that car. VW didn't pay the tariff, my father did. VW didn't make less profit on that car, my father paid more. That's how tariffs work.

You’re right, Lawrence, we should all know what tariffs are by the time we’re in high school and my government studies teacher would be apoplectic over the failure of The NY Times to know what a tariff is. It seems that now the various media outlets are “interpreting” Trump’s garbled word salad as if it all makes perfect sense. However, as a retired English teacher, I can affirm that Trump lacks the basics of constructing his ideas, and that is a generous description of whatever drifts from his brain and out his mouth, into a structure that we can understand. That is the media in cahoots with Trump to fool the American people. That is a terrible disservice to all of us. Agreed Trump won't know what he's talking about, but if I still remember my Adam Smith, the idea is to keep one's own currency circulating within one's own economy. At the moment, I gues, even from my own spending, that 'western' currencies have been haemorrhaging away into China's foreign currency coffers for decades, so it matters not to the balance, whether in Trump's parlance, China 'pays the USA', or US customers stop paying them for goods. Either way there is less currency in their coffers, and even more loss in goods piling up that they can't sell. China does lose and lose badly, while US cos can start producing again. People will have to back US businesses and prove just how patriotic they are. It's entirely by mistake, and by lying, but, in the long run, Trump's 'tariffs' could well boost the US, which still has more in country natural resources to supply its own economy with than many, if any, countries in the 'old world' who used up most of their resources in the Industrial Revolution and have been relying on the 'new worlds' ever since. My own UK is dead in the water, and cannot possibly survive on its own resources, and will go under when world food trade collapses mid century. For actual survival's sake, there might actually be good cause to actuallly consider Trump's survival tariffs, but don't tell him I said so!

You’re right, Lawrence, we should all know what tariffs are by the time we’re in high school and my government studies teacher would be apoplectic over the failure of The NY Times to know what a tariff is. It seems that now the various media outlets are “interpreting” Trump’s garbled word salad as if it all makes perfect sense. However, as a retired English teacher, I can affirm that Trump lacks the basics of constructing his ideas, and that is a generous description of whatever drifts from his brain and out his mouth, into a structure that we can understand. That is the media in cahoots with Trump to fool the American people. That is a terrible disservice to all of us. Since it’s clear the emperor has no clothes, the media needs to let him walk around naked, including his words. Thank you, Lawrence, for your steadfast attention to details. They matter, now more than ever.

Agreed Trump won't know what he's talking about, but if I still remember my Adam Smith, the idea is to keep one's own currency circulating within one's own economy. At the moment, I gues, even from my own spending, that 'western' currencies have been haemorrhaging away into China's foreign currency coffers for decades, so it matters not to the balance, whether in Trump's parlance, China 'pays the USA', or US customers stop paying them for goods. Either way there is less currency in their coffers, and even more loss in goods piling up that they can't sell. China does lose and lose badly, while US cos can start producing again. People will have to back US businesses and prove just how patriotic they are. It's entirely by mistake, and by lying, but, in the long run, Trump's 'tariffs' could well boost the US, which still has more in country natural resources to supply its own economy with than many, if any, countries in the 'old world' who used up most of their resources in the Industrial Revolution and have been relying on the 'new worlds' ever since. My own UK is dead in the water, and cannot possibly survive on its own resources, and will go under when world food trade collapses mid century. For actual survival's sake, there might actually be good cause to actuallly consider Trump's survival tariffs, but don't tell him I said so!
