I've always wondered what it would take to convert deserted, depleted mines to usable, arable land. It seems such a waste. Maybe those engines and other machinery can be repurposed to replenish the land - now that would be an industry for the 21st century.
Hard surface welding is the one "job from hell" you are referring to in case someone is wondering what Mitch is talking about. Another job from hell is air arcing off the steel input "pipes" going into castings after they have cooled.

The mine operation itself is off limits to the public. With today's geological science, I'm sure the mine owners know exactly where the bottom of the mineral seam is!
You will always be a geeky engineer!
THANKS! Every once in a while, we would have a really cool guy start working at the place I worked at. They were always BAD engineers. I always say, if you don't wear a pocket protector, your not practicing safe pen storage.
How many million tonnes of rock were excavated during history of bingham canyon mine?
Istvan,.....this would be an excellent project for you to work on,....and get back to us!
@@OurJourneyInMyles sorry but i don't live in the usa :(
This is a great tour video! Not quite appropriate language in a couple of places to allow for me to share with my classroom.
Thanks for watching anyways.
Love the Video but Maybe with your experience @ BE and P&H you can answer a burning question I've had for the last 10 yrs Casting parts for both BE now Cat, P&H /Joy/Komatsu.....Whistler lips, why are they called Whistler lips? I've asked this question multiple times to guys in both companies and no one I've talked too knows why or the origin..
Wow! I hate to disappoint you, but I had never heard that term used!
Bucyrus Erie! Now that is a classic Wisconsin company - too bad it went out of business in 2011!
BE was my first job out college, and will always have a warm spot in my heart. I worked their about 7 years, starting in 1975. Wow,.......I'm friggin old!
@@OurJourneyInMyles Not much older than me - I graduated MSOE in 1980 and went to work in the Telecommunications industry which I enjoyed for nearly 30 years before jumping into facility operations in the healthcare sector.
So that giant hole didn't used to be there?
Nope! The geologists just told them to "dig here, and they have been ever since!"
Lol! What happened at the end?!?
It was a day that I found the sound effects button on my editing software!
I think its like 300 tons it can load
I loved working in this industry,.........but it is cyclical in nature.
Welcome to Utah! We live in the Salt Lake area, and are your newest friends. Be sure you check out the awesome views and scenic drives we are famous for. Looking forward to getting to know you.
Hey thanks! We have already moved on quite a distance east, but are SO HAPPY we were smart enough to spend 20 days in SLC. Only a handful of cities truly leave a "wow" factor in our memory. SLC did it to me on my first visit in 1969. I'll be dipped if it didn't do it again in 2019!
No one was hurt cause they new it was coming
All the monitoring equipment did the job, and they have even more and better equipment in place now.
Should of said old visitor center isn't there anymore.
Yes, we learned the old center got wiped out. I am sure the Covid thing has put a new visitor center plans on hold, if it ever was even in the plans.
I've always wondered what it would take to convert deserted, depleted mines to usable, arable land. It seems such a waste. Maybe those engines and other machinery can be repurposed to replenish the land - now that would be an industry for the 21st century.
It is all up to the world, and voters on what we deem important. Reclamation needs to be factored into the costs of the product mined!
Yeah u can probably chip the New Zealand one off. Lol. The smelter is closing down soon I think
So sorry to hear that. Those are good jobs to loose. I lost my job in mining engineering. It is a very cyclical business.
Aluminum smelter closing 2039
That tire is 50,000
Yowsers!
No way did I see my house this video
Extra excitement at NO CHARGE!
I once had the hell job
Hard surface welding is the one "job from hell" you are referring to in case someone is wondering what Mitch is talking about. Another job from hell is air arcing off the steel input "pipes" going into castings after they have cooled.
Blah blah blah, we get it you used to be an engineer... Yeesh.... :-p
Always good when we have a family member so articulate with their reply :) This is Sue.... Alex... I agree.... he can't help himself!!
@@OurJourneyInMyles hahaha, yet somehow I love every minute of it ;-)
Once a engineer always a engineer : )
@@gman77gas It truly is something that is hard to shake!
