I avoid Kabukicho entirely when in Tokyo. I find it disgusting. Even parts of Shibuya are getting really sketchy and gross. When people come to me for travel advice on Tokyo, like 'the best area to stay in the city etc', I suggest they look at staying on the other side of Shinjuku station or somewhere more quiet and genteel altogether...somewhere residential, upmarket and not known for dodgy nightlife. The train system is excellent so you'll never feel isolated in any pocket in the city; cool stuff of your choice is no more than a few train stops away no matter where you stay. Kabukicho...yeah, just avoid it.
