- It's decision time for the lads. A change in German law means they have to either register with the authorities and pay tax or go back to England. Oz doesn't want to go back to England but doesn't like the idea of staying in Germany on his own. So he goes around the lads trying to persuade some of them to stay. Neville & Bomber are certain they are returning home. Wayne is set on staying as he has fallen for Christa, for whom he makes a plaque out of a piece of skirting board, much to the amusement of Barry & Moxey. Dennis is torn between Dagmar & his wife Vera. He decides to go out to the town to get drunk away from everyone else. He bumps into McGowan then some Germans from the site start trouble with Dennis and a fight insuses. Oz has followed Dennis and jumps in when it kicks off. Oz is slashed by a glass and is in hospital after a blood transfusion. Oz can't believe he's got German blood in him so Dennis makes up the story that Neville gave him 4 pints of his blood. Dennis has a heart to heart with Dagmar and decides to go back to England.
Barry has decided to go to Saudi Arabia and he brings his motorbike into the hut to service it. Wayne is not happy as he is the only one stopping on. The lads have a "topping off" ceremony on the last day then go over to the bar. Dennis spends the last night at Dagmar's house for drinks. The lads return from the bar and Barry & Wayne smell petrol in the hut from Barry's bike, Wayne drops his cigarette and this set the hut on fire. Neville is panicking as all the passports, money and belongings are still in the hut. Neville knocks on Dagmar's door and explains what's happened, he's invited in and all the lads follow. This episode was floor managed by Peter Smith.
when i was 12-13yrs old my dad was a brickie over in germany.. this series told no lies watsoever.. my dad used to come back once a month and he said he was working and living in huts just like this.. everytime i watch this first series it just reminds me of how my dad would of lived. my dad passed away in 2009 and to this day i still have his trowel and spirit level.. great series with so many memories
I grew up in the 1980's and I remember my Nanna taking me down to the high street in Littleborough, Lancashire to watch the old Mills getting knocked down. We then moved down to London in 1984 because my Dad couldn't get another job locally after being made redundant. Parts of Northern England became a hard place to live in the 1980's, due to a lack of jobs. Thatcher wasn't bothered about it either. Along with her government.
Aww, that you kept his trowel and spirit level really touched me!
I grew up in Germany till I was seven and have a German mother (BAOR brat). It resonated in our house as well. Condolences to you for your father, mine died 7 years ago and this was my dad's favourite.
Nice one fella

There will never be another series as good as this. Absolute legends all those characters.
Only fools and horses is hands down the best
Only fools and horses was irritating not funny and well thought out like this
If you mean this series (series one) in particular, I always thought series two was better.
Both brilliant, but it went downhill after series two.
@@flight101 two totally different things but both the best ever. One was comedy and one was real life drama.
The world has changed far too much now to make it possible.
for a start, the snowflake generation has the power. Now everything on T.V needs to be absolutely dreenshed in woke culture now.
You can't make God comedy now now the
snowflake generation is in charge. Everything needs to be extremely
P.C. now sad times we live in now a day's.
I’ve been in the building trade 43 years and the writers got this spot on. Great show , can’t believe it’s over 40 years ago we first had this on our screens.
I am 51 now and watched this as a kid, I love these men...madness lol
I am 49 and watched it as a child with my mum .💔miss me mum and those days

Its Good Friday 2022, and still there is nothing better scripted or acted than this right here, the conclusion of series 1, never gets boring
Bank holiday Monday 😁 2022
Great show.
Brilliant program to watch I’m addicted to it all!!
Every so often I just sit back and relax watching the lads !!
I love the thornly manor episodes
Never get sick of watching these
God bless ya all
September 2022 - absolutely the best written British series
Good for you
@Anthony Conlin so why didn't he base it around 3 smoggies then?
Back in the days when itv focused on quality drama instead of the cheap and nasty reality shows they make today,
Spot on (sadly).
Absolutely.
Moxey's comment as the hut is burning down "It takes me back, really takes me back" cracks me up every time!!!
My mum used to date Pat Roach back in the day in Birmingham before I was born . This is ageless it’s a diamond series that will still be good in 500 let alone it’s age of 40 years. Always cheers me up and always will do. Xx
Aww, did he call her "my love" and "my dear"? He seemed like a very sweet gentleman.
Well said👍
@@zappababe8577 Pat was a Brummie, not a Bristolian in real life.
Bomers away ❤
Nearly 40years on and I’m watching this again on a Friday night
You forget how cutting edge this was in 1983.
Thank you Dick Clements and Ian Le Frenais for this beautiful show
And Stan Hey who wrote some iconic moments.
And Porridge.
I was only a kid when AVP was released but still love it now as a 52 year old bloke.
This programme series 1 and 2 bring back memories. Amazing cast and script. Watched it as a kid in 83/86 stayed with me always. Youll never get anything like this again.
Why was there so much talent in the 60, 70 and 80’s? Nothing exists today, music and TV just doesn’t come near today. Feel sorry for young people.
Not a white country anymore... that's why.
I agree
Mr James Nail should have won an Oscar. A criminally underrated actor.
@peternagy-im4be Give over, Jimmy Bradford live down the road to me when we were growing up. He's playing a toned down version of himself.
Series 1 and 2 always be my favourite TV show ever, brilliant
Same here fond memories
Fucking a
My mum & I loved this series. She died 4yrs ago. We used to quote lines from it to each other. I have lovely memories of her when I watch these episodes. The earlier series were the best. I didn't like it when they changed Oz. You can't change a major character like him. It changes the whole series.
Oz was never changed in all the series
Oz was never changed.
I think it was Neville that was changed when he became a spy !
🙏❤️🙏
Series 1 and 2 were best. The later series were absolute junk. They were ridiculous.
Just found out my old school friend has past away so watching this as it was our favourite program in middle school.Miss you Eddie R.I.P.
The best tv program I have ever iithwseen I have the complete dvd set and watch it often I love it and never get fed-up watching it
Wayne was a really good actor
Not wasted, he was good in this👍@mrmister769
Total classic. Unbeatable.
a story about many things including true friendship, a piece of genius
I watched this brilliant program the first time it aired I still don't mind watching it whenever I can't find anything good to Watch
Auf Wiedersehen Pet was a brilliant comedy-drama series with exciting storylines.
2024 and this show still brilliant, watched this when were kids .
Yes only a tv programme but a story about real working people and lives.
From a time when people had alot less money and stuff .
But seemed happier.
The best program ever made ...love it
I agree with you its brilliant
👍
When your on a good job your on a good job its great working with a good set of lads anything is possible
What a happy page no nasty comments in my eyes that's living alright 😁👍
Dennis should’ve stayed in Germany with Dagmar. Hindsight’s a bastard lol
"Hey Dennis you'll never guess what, Moxey's an arsonist!"
And he doesn't even smoke...
Dennis's reply.. SCOTCH.

How beautiful is that nurse who handles Oz's hospitalisation?
The doctor? yes, "Who is Lotte? wow. 27:50
Pat Roach, great man.
I liked the way MacGowan offered to "sort him out". 🙂
"Highly original love token that is, a plank." 😂 Love Barry and Wayne's friendship total opposite, but get on so well and look out for each other
Oz's speech before the fire about always needing skilled labour.... He was absolutely correct!
Yep. In the UK tradesman are raking it in as there’s such a shortage. Too many going to uni and not learning a trade.
Wish I had now.
Oz being right about anything?? C'mon, son!
@@robg5161 Same thing in the U.S.and here in Canada.I have scraped by with a Ph.d. in zoology and love my work, but I wish I'd picked up a trade to rely on for a good salary to pay for graduate school.

Fell in love with the series,it’s actors.
Superb writing.complete joy.

iconic programme still not bettered to this day
This was such a great TV show. I used to watch it as a little kid in Germany when my dad was based their in the 1980s.
Best comedy drama series ever written and performed
End of July 2023 and I'm watching as many as possible as I forgot how GREAT they were and still are ..
Nice to see this again.
Strangely, when I first watched it I was younger than the characters, now I'm older.
It's a good example of a past time before multiple TVs in bars, before almost everybody had a smartphone on the table in font of them, indeed, before people stared at their smartphones at a table with a group of people doing the same thing.
Times change, and AWP shows some of the times I enjoyed the most.
A great series.
Well said Well Said. 👏👏👏
Criiiiikey! I'd forgotten how stunning Lysette Anthony was.
Utterly stunning beauty.
still and always will watch the best drama comedy in auf pet timeless
The best t v programme they made .I wish they would make more of them
There was a special chemistry between these actors which had disappeared by the time series 3 & 4 were made.
Also great plotting and script writing in the earlier series.
We are so lucky to have the 26 episodes of series 1 & 2.
The best Drama series that there has ever been on British Television. It’s coming up for 40 years old now and still nothing has surpassed it for longevity and sheer entertainment. As truly awful as the BBC reinvention was in the 2000’s there can be no denying the magic of those two series produced by Central TV in the eighties.
They weren't awful at all. They just weren't as good. Very few things are. Those BBC series are still entertaining enough.
In my opinion Minder was slightly better with Auf Pet a close second.
I'm 50 next year, I sadly lost my dad ,2years ago and when you only ,3 tv channels he loved this and so did I, oz my absolute favorite and him in spender, I k now someone same as oz now xxx
I enjoyed series 3 because was different and yes a great shame no Wayne. But it was definitely decent
Spot on my friend! They really were truly awful!
Best programme ever friendship never ends.
“And you don’t even smoke” is an absolutely cracking line 😂😂😂
This show had the best music ever, still love listening to the opening titles 😍
Awesome show. Still watch the whole series every few years.
Hey Barry you burnt the toast again😂😂😂
wish we had tv shows like this today ! now all we have are naff soaps and utter 💩 reality shows 😡
Still got the 2 season box set. Priceless
Was this 1985?? everything got dropped for the whole family to be sat glued to the TV to watch this series.
Imagine a family doing that nowadays (not a cat n hells chance) 🙊
just the best series the charactors were so good they will never be able to get anything like this series ever again
One of the best series ever on tv.
Fucking top 3 of all time tv series I’ve ever watched in my life!!!!! SUPERB!!!!!!
Barry, did you burn the toast again, that’s so funny
@thechanneloffun3760. LOOK OZ WE'VE ALL GOT TO LIVE HERE ROIGHT BUT WE DON'T WANT YOUR TOENAILS ALL OVER THE PLACE. Barry used to crack me up.
I remember my brother actually went to Germany to do this kinda work in the mid 80s almost at the time this started coming on tv 📺😆
I like the way dagmar looks at den at the end thinking you are a idiot
Dagmar was stunning.
@@craigpimlott204 so true
This and breaking bad are the two best programmes on tele ever!!
Loved these guys great stuff
Hahaha when Oz says to Nev "im ridicolous? your the one holding his arm out hoping the sun will make ya tatoo go away" quality writers Ian La Frenai and Clement
Was like seeing a gang of mates every Friday night. Like myself, I bet all site workers have worked with all these characters. Best drama/comedy series ever. Didn't like it when they brought it back. Just not the same. Only one time when Oz said, the old Oz has to show up every now and again. Got all the old ones on dvd, going to start watching them again from the start.
Every person who ever worked on a building site can identify all these characters
Old skool classic❤
As a bricklayer myself this is class takes me back to when the building trade was enjoyable
Quality series some have gone as in passed away but memory remain...
I fucking cracked up when they all walked in at the end
It's Barry's sooty face that does it
Absolutely brilliant,best tv I’ve ever seen I even became a brickie 👀
Loved this series, brought a tear to my eye. Memories of watching it as a kid with my dad RIP, brilliantly written and true to life on the site
Frank Roddam, apart from creating this amazing programme directed Quadrophenia and has no doubt made a fortune from inventing Masterchef. 🎉

After Christa.

Interesting watching this after only ever seeing 3 and 4. almost as though someone learned how to do prequels well. Also puts the concept of middle age neatly in perspective.
Great memories what a programme this and boys from the black stuff.

December 30th 23 and this is still brilliant 🍺
all time classic
This makes me want to dig my boxed set out. Brilliant series👌
I used to love this, great show.
I was in the Army in Germany when this was on TV. It was cult viewing in camp on Forces TV every Tuesday I think. And Young Ones and Blackadder. Happy Days.
I'm half bloody German now lol
Absolutely LOVE the show both 1 and 2 it’s up there with only fools, minder, the sweeney etc for best classic British telly 😊🇬🇧
The only thing that always gets me though ( even as a kid it used to bug me because it’s that bloody obvious 😂 ) is why the heck didn’t Neville just get the names on his tattoo coloured in and and incorporate his and Brendas name another way??!! ... 🤦🏻♂️..
Save him whining about it 😂😂😂😂
@ian Campbell YEAH!! You’re right very good find and point mate 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻…
@ian Campbell As a Londoner my 2 nans were from Sunderland and Darlington so I’ve a rough understanding of the do’s and certainly the don’t’s up your way mate 😂👍🏻
Think you’re spot on with JN just following the script poor sod lol .. Reminds me of Dennis waterman in minder .. He was an avid Chelsea fan in real life whereas in minder he was a Fulham fan 😂😂😂😂👍🏻
@ian Campbell lol yeah it came out the year before I was born!!.. lol but it’s classic and any generation would love it 👍🏻,
And to you my man cheers 🍻
@ian Campbell 13 was a good age to watch this as you were a teenager and becoming a young man so learning the best possible humour/banter etc etc that only comes from construction ( I’m a scaffolder and this taught me lots when I started out as a 16 yr old 😂 )
You’re right with the timescale… it really is timeless 💙👍🏻
Wasn’t hard for Dennis Waterman then! Both Chelsea and Fulham are pants. ……plastic pants!

Legends..❤
Must be in top three programs ever made
It was law to watch this in our house
Dennis was stupid going back to tyneside ending up driving a taxi 🚕 he should of stayed with dagmar
I wonder if the title of this episode is a reference to "When the Boat Comes In". It's an excellent series as well, and both of them popped up in my queue.
Awesome video thanks they should have made more 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Pmsl has anyone else noticed that Wayne set fire to his leg @ 44:34?
What a great ending, that's the first time i've ever seen the program.
Marks and Sparks or Neville and lotte 😂
Iconic show don't make em like this no more!
Haha " Barry burn't the toast again " class
Superb 👍
Great days never see them again. Look at it now no comparisment.
Wonderful, wonderful series and I felt so sorry Oz in the beginning when Dennis was so nasty to him.
Nasty? Considering Oz constantly racially abused the other workers, got the others in trouble and abandoned his own child without saying goodbye, he’s lucky they put up with him. Fantastic character, but a horrible person in the beginning (apart from a few nice moments here and there)
20:05 Bier auf der Baustelle - ahh, die gute, alie Zeit!
Who's done that, Moxey?, 😂
"GET BACK! GET BACK!" "Get back to where you once belooong!"
31:48 Spot the hand!
Those bricks laid are super dodgy, def not brickie experienced.
Turkey IS in Asia. Correct Oz man
....and ....Dennis, you made the wrong choice my old son. Should have stuck with Dagmar
