    names for the monastery city/village locations would have been nice also to help with Portugal theme, could be hidden under tile

    I have heard that this one and Lorenzo... are very similar. But this one looks more vibrant and easy to follow, with cool little dice castles, so its the one we bought.

    totally agree. I was thinking the same exact thing regarding the naming of the characters.
    Love this game....I think it can be swingy if you don't hit the "tech" tracks hard....but much much fun.

    You should spend a day doing a Portugal-themed game marathon: Coimbra, Madeira, and Lisboa!

    Played this yesterday. It does look good and really has sound mechanisms and flow. Also, the level of replayability here is insanely high. On the other hand, it could be called "Some City Somewhere" (which sounds strangely catchy) because it has nothing to do with Coimbra. I agree with the one issue you have with the game. I little bit of attention into theme would have be better than none.
    Also, there is a limit to the amount of end game scoring for me. Every player going one lap around the board with end game scoring feels a little too much for me. I would have liked a little more in game scoring and a little less end game scoring.
    I also tried Rajas of the Ganges this week which, while not really having a draft, it has Dice Placement and I must say it impressed me more.

    I'm a euro guy, but I've entered euro overload, even conceptually/theoretically,,, meaning I'd never have time to play the euros I was interested in, but i'd still have interest, but now I'm just getting conversion/track/area overload.
    I really wanted to like this game following up on Tzolkien, etc, but my mojo is not cranking currently I guess.
    Good summary though.

    @JJ_TheGreat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Richard, so if you could only choose 1 game - between Coimbra and Pulsar 2849, two dice drafting games, which would you choose? I see that Pulsar 2849 is #81 on your list while Coimbra is #89, so they are both pretty close. What questions should we ask in order to decide between the 2 games? Based on your runthroughs, I feel that Pulsar 2849 is a bit of a heavier game, would that be accurate? Thanks.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yup, they're very close. i would still give the nod to pulsar, in large part because of the huge amount of setup variability.

    Played this yesterday and loved it. I will be honest I haven’t seen all the play through but I am surprised that you never mentioned that a small percentage of cards have some tiny take that. Were you ok with that Richard?

      @manos2495 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always check your rank but some times i have the feeling that despite you rank a game higher than another, you may like it less. Maybe i m wrong but sometimes you give me that impression by watching you in your videos and see the level of your excitement. Thats why i m asking for your opinion and not just the numbers of a rank :)

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@manos2495 ah, i see. well my rankings are partially about which I like the most, but also about which i think are objectively the best. i like coimbra a lot, but i think both waterdeep and orleans are better games.but they're all within a fraction of a percent in terms of my ranking (i.e. they're all 8's which mean they're all great!) :)

    • @manos2495
      @manos2495 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Richard! Thats what i was talking about :) Anyway i think i m going for Orleans because as you said looks a bit better than Coimbra and a bit less boring themed than Waterdeep. I also like the fact that Orleans doesn't have cards, only tokens.

    Great critique. Fully agree with your one issue with Coimbra. It drives me nuts too. And i feel wrong thinking this but in this golden day and age I have decided against Coimbra simply because of their art reuse on the characters. It kills the imagination space for me.

    I hate dummy players that only existe with 2 players (an italian designers fetiche apparently). I don't think thats "good scaling" at all. But thats my biased opinion. So I guess it's another no from me.

    Great review. I consider this to be the most overrated game of 2018...
    I’m personally not a fan of games where all the players are staring at cards as part of tough decision making. If I were I would choose Elysium over this. Also not thrilled with progress tracks but if I were I would choose Shakespeare over this. As for dice placement lots of better games, top being Rajas of the Ganges.
