The most important thing we learned today is that Dev has a phone voice, and it's adorable. But seriously, this is so delightfully fun and you did a great job with this little interview.
@DeviantOllam Loved the various ways you described RTA & all of the other shenanigans! It had a certain “Je ne sais quoi"... (Hope my 7th grade semester of french got the spelling right)
OMG Ms. DeMartino is AMAZING!!!! I couldn't help but smile the entire time I'm listening to that interview. ... I know she's got her own family, but feel like EVERYONE should just honorarily adopt her... And her voice is still so 100% distinctive and welcoming and warm.... There has GOT to be, if she's interested, some voice acting work for her.
Thanks Dev. To Linda, thank you for taking the time to speak with Dev, and share it all with us. Now, when I hear your OTIS voice I will now have some wonderful context. Hearing the both of you just chat about life, the basics, music, marriage, and... I just chuckle. We also married young, and she is a bit older than me. After some years, I finally got a confession! She does not want to be alone. Men tend to die a bit sooner, so marrying a younger guy lower the chance of being a widow. She is a gem and the live of my life, best friend, the whole nine. Finding that quiet room, and seeking that sound seems hilarious! Flat rate makes a ton of sense. And I am rambling along while listening wishing I was in the chat too. Nice work you two. Thank you again for it.
"I had so many friends at Otis"... And now a bunch of admirers (wrong word I guess, but close enough). Too bad I'm not in the US so I can hear her regularly! Wonderful.
delightful interview. " i found out my daughter was expecting my first grandchild" i love that Ms. DeMartino claimed the birth as "expecting MY first grandchild" perfectly grandmotherly
Thanks for another fantastic episode brother! My youth was spent in malls, with Montgomery & Otis elevators... and doing naughty things with payphones.
I absolutely love everything about this video, my dear one! This is magnificent and lovely! Thank you for bringing such light and joy into our lives. I love you! 💜💚
Finally had enough time to sit and watch this. Thanks so much for asking my question. I coulda swore that was the same lady at the beginning of Half Life.
Oh man this interview is so freaking cool! But the biggest thing for me is how sincere the conversation between the individuals.. and now I will never get in an elevator, hear a voice, and think of this interview and not want crack smile from geeking out 😭
Linda, if you see these comments I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your work in the past and I hope you and your family are well and happy.
Thank you so much for the fun educational inside look into a part of history that moat people overlook. It puts her story back in focus for the next generations that follow and ask, "I wonder who did the lovely voice for this Otis elevator and what stories that person could share with us about her career"
This was so much fun to watch/listen to. You could hear in your voice how much you enjoyed making this one! Thank you and thank you for sharing with us.
This is such an awesome video!!! Us elevator enthusiasts refer to Otis's original voice as "The Grandma Voice." There was also a male version, commonly referred to as "The Grandpa Voice." The voice you hear today sounds slightly different from Linda's original recordings in the 80s. Is it still her voice? She alluded to the recordings being more computer-generated today.
1. Incredibly polite 2. Just got home from playing Bridge 3. Starts telling her life story within a minute of meeting you Checks out, she’s from Indiana. What a wonderful conversation!
I love this. I think I hear her voice in the Otis elevators I ride every day I'm in the office. Thanks for doing the research and making the calls to get this amazing interview!
seeing your videos from many years back of how you tear down an elevator to leverage to secure floors, to a beautiful story about the voice we all hear when we use elevators. I enjoy learning from your videos! after thought: stories like these are being lost to time. we need to work better on archiving our history!
This makes me reallly wanna learn more about elevators. I already had a bit of an itch to learn, but knowing there’s so much Otis stuff in Indiana? Now you have my attention XD
She is one of the first, and gosh does she deserve to be, she sounds like such the lovely dear. I feel she deserves to be a celebrity in our hearts, for the contribution of her voice to something that many people overlook. Elevators and the voice of said elevators are a staple of modern society.
Dev, can we send you postcards to forward on to her? I feel so compelled to write her one hahaha. How awesome would it be to fill her mailbox with fan mail. Also, she pulled “June 1995” out so quick, and meanwhile I can’t remember what I did last month…..
Delightful interview; as you're aware here in Montreal the elevator voices are in French: most of them friendly, affable much like Ms. DeMartino's, but there is (was?) this one elevator at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont (next to the Admissions department) that had a stern, grumpy male voice you could almost hear sigh in exasperation after calling out « Rez-de-chaussée » or « Sous-sol » - weird.
She really sounds like a dear old lady. What struck me most tho was how you approached it. Sweeter voice, some of the phrasing etc. Was this a purposeful effort in human engineering, or does a lot of stuff just slide into your daily life unnoticed? Cause the way you approached especially the first conversation was great.
We would probably call it purposeful but also instinctual. It's not like I was putting on a "fake" voice, but I sort of just drop into a natural cadence that is most suitable and well matched to anybody I speak with in general.
@@DeviantOllam Cool. I imagine thats a skill/instinct that really helps you in life. And something a lot of the more technical hacker community might lack a bit. I at least do lol
Having inadvertently been “the voice of” a handful of places due to my telecom background and small company shenanigans - you see, they forget they need to pay a voice-over artist and have a fully completed script for all prompts prior to hiring them - and I’m just trying to install the darn thing and be done with it… I have built up a lifetime of hunting weakly for interviews and stories about people who were “the voice of” pretty much anything. I had not seen an interview with your guest yet, though. Delightful. The 2013 movie “In A World” is also a silly fun watch for those of us of a certain age in regards to movie announcer voice work. Cheers!
This is amazing! Just saying, I think this lady’s voice is different from the vocabulary you uploaded. The vocabulary you uploaded was a little newer than this. Only reason I say that is I could definitely see this person being the older voice announcer from the 80s, but definitely not the newer one which is what you uploaded.
I never really put much thought into elevator voices other than “gosh why is it so loud in this one” as an autistic person but now meeting the actual person I am going to pay closer attention!
Deviant was so happy while doing this interview; he grinned all day long after getting off the phone with Linda.
It is so wonderful, wasn't it? What a delightful lady she is! 😁👍💚
I was smiling the whole time listening to her. What a delightful person!

Wow Linda is such a trip. She honestly didn't even need any leading, it just naturally progressed as it went along. This was really neat Dev.
Linda's a gem, isn't she? 😁
"I'm a person who could figure stuff out" 👌
Aww you can tell immediatly that Linda is a sweetheart.

One of the most heartwarming and downright interesting things I've ever seen on youtube. Thanks for finding and interviewing Linda!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a gracious lady with her time and information.
What a lovely person. Please thank her for sharing.
I will, thanks for enjoying!
Linda seems to be a person who knows what is important in life
She does. This interview is edited down a bit. She spent so much of the call just talking about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren ☺️
