    Microsoft's Project Natick is leveraging technology from submarines and working with pioneers in marine energy for the second phase of its moonshot to develop self-sufficient underwater datacenters that can deliver rapid and agile cloud services to coastal cities.

    I am curious about the security ramifications of this deployment as well. Granted it is a sealed capsule, but physically it looks accessible to anyone that found its location. Interesting concept however; it is great research is being done to reduce energy consumption.

      If someone opens it water will rush in and destroy the electronics inside. I'm sure they have sensors to detect how the undersea currents affect the capsule. Those sensors could notify them if someone tries to tow it away.

    Seems cool but why doesn't the low ocean temperature cool the servers directly without such a plethora of fans... For example a system where one side is pure heatsink and the hottest stuff is attached there to the point there almost a direct connection between the heat and the cold... I'm assuming this is done but they don't explain it at all.

    MICROSOFT THIS IS CRAZY!
    1. A russian submarine can take it out with one hit
    2. dont run Azure cloud services on that data centers!
    3. If the place where data center locate is not protected and have no restriction of physical access , than it only mean that is insecure and can be used as potential entry point for hackers.
    4. what about hardware maintenance like , firmware update and software patches?

    • @Salahudin-
      @Salahudin- 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A Russian submarine can take anything out in "one hit"

    • @tr233
      @tr233 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You dont get my point, the point is this area is not protected and if not protected means data not safe and vulnerable and you shouldn't store there anything sensitive and critical to you business and your customers!!!

    • @lollibone
      @lollibone 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You really that thick? "Sure I'll go scuba down to it and steal some data, ohh wait. Water flooded in and destroyed everything." I also feel like they have a depth sensor or something to figure out if someone is lifting that thing up. Lifting it up can't be done with a small fishing boat either, that thing weighs a fuckton and a half.

    • @tr233
      @tr233 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol, it only question of logistics , if somebody have enough resources and interest in data which is stored at those servers , then it is not a question of time but rather of when it will happen and if the area around the container not protected i am pretty sure that this will happen rather very soon.

    • @lollibone
      @lollibone 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just as they can break in to google data centers around the world? You have to realize that this is only a proof of concept. They are testing if this would be a viable option for the future, they are not selling this as a service to anyone in a long time. I'm sure they have something to keep the pods from being stolen, but I think it's less likely that they will be stolen than that someone infiltrates an existing data center and steals data from there. Or why not just try to hack those underwater pods? Hackers have succeeded in stealing all sorts of things in the past, way less effort than lifting that shit up from the seabed, transporting it somewhere and then getting it up and running again just to steal some data, might not even be very sensitive data.

    So many questions that their project page doesn't cover. How did they deal with heat? It's a sealed tube at 35-50 feet, they appear to be using standard racks with fans, so I'm guess there is some kind of intercooler setup, but with that kind of density in a sealed environment it would seem they still end up with heat soak. What kind of air mixture are they using? How do they deal with hardware failures (do they just isolate it and wait until the 5 year change cycle?) . They must be planning on using a localized energy system (this current phase in running on grid) otherwise I don't see any advantage to this system, other than coastal city deployment. I would love to see how they anticipate managing this at scale, because I can think of dozens of problems that would arise with 10 or 100 of these clustered on the ocean floor.

      Lets call it for what it is: an anti-FBI raid datacenter. Based on the limited information, it looks to be no where near the coast line. So lets assume it's at least 12 miles off the coast, and placed into international waters. Good luck with the subpoena! However, at least we now know where the DNC and Hillary relocated their servers...

    • @echtogammut
      @echtogammut 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The two test modules I saw looked to be within a half mile of the coast. But even if they are putting them in international waters, the cables are local to the country and objects left in international waters could be labeled as abandoned allowing the government could use maritime law to seize them. Also, I'm sure Microsoft wants their data centers under the protection of a sovereign power, otherwise any country or company will just float down and take a peak.

    • @johnmacward
      @johnmacward 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This area off Orkney is a well known shallow bank which contains many many renewable tidal experiments so the usage here is because Orkney probably provide very easy access and mooring to the datacentre throufghout the project life, along with power and an a decent internet connection,. I wouldn't just to the conclusion that this is a law avoidance thing.

      @TrevorBrass 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The project is close to shore, well within what is considered a nation's territorial waters, to say nothing of a nation's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This isn't a feasible plan to get outside of the jurisdiction of the Scottish government, or any government for that matter. It still has to have a tether for electricity and fiber optic data.

    • @markmarston
      @markmarston 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trevor Brass thanks for your reply. I seem to recall MS is in a court battle or was in a court battle having to do with where the information actually resides. Some entity requested info and MS technically said it was in another country. I was thinking this project would help them solve that type of problem in the future.

    • @TrevorBrass
      @TrevorBrass 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So you're talking about when the U.S. Department of Justice was requesting data that was at a Microsoft data center in Ireland. Microsoft turned over data that was in US-based data centers, but not at its Ireland operation. (U.S. v. Microsoft).
      The issue has been mooted by the passage of the CLOUD Act through Congress and signed into law by President Trump.

      This isn't really a big deal, but yes, in principle it's not good. Standard approach heats the atmosphere, though: the heat can't be magicked away in any case. Sea-heating is more "efficient" in that the energy doesn't readily escape the water, but also there's no powerful fans in this setup, so there's less total energy pumped in.

I guess that is a secret to hold but to me as it is, it seems too vulnerable. I guess a 24-7 coastal watch or local security sea platform would help be a physical barrier.

      Divisor The heat generated by the servers running is the same even when in water. The difference is in the energy required to cool down. On land you would use Giant ACs which in turn generate more heat, here under the sea you still probably use an AC but consuming less electricity as its cooler down there.
