I worked there as a security officer and manager in the mid 1990s. It was still called the White House Motel. The apartment on the second floor of the main building is where the owner's son resided. I've been up in that attic in the summer and you're right, it is hot as Hell in there. There used to be a clock tower above the attic. The main lobby was impressive before they ripped it out and turned it into a nightclub. The front desk was huge and there was a fireplace in the lobby too. It's a shame someone couldn't renovate it and make a decent business out of it. In the 60s and 70s, the motel was usually occupied by people travelling to Maryland to gamble. There were slot machines in the bar and lobby, but that was before I worked there. In the 70s, race fans would stay there to attend the car races at Budd's Creek raceway.

There were a bunch of creepy things! The sign that said "the shinning....murder". Then picture in the frame that said "unseen guest". Then the banging and door creaking. Also the very beginning when you walk down the path before entering the motel was pretty creepy! You're brave I don't think I would have been able to do that alone!

This makes me angry. Not at Dan, because it is fascinating to see these old places but to think of all the homeless people and people who struggle to afford basic housing and how easily this could be taken over and turned into affordable housing.
The only reason it was as preserved as it is is because apparently there must not be much of a homeless population in the immediate area or they would certainly have taken it over and destroyed it. That's why this hasn't been half burned down and had all the copper ripped out of the walls to sell like all the abandoned places you see in urban areas.

I'm really surprised that no one else has ever made the connection of the chandelier in the main section of the motel, and the box of crystal bobbles in the attic (that go with it). Worth quite a bit of money if it were cleaned and put back together (which isn't difficult). Proof that thieves and vandals are stupid.

I just found your channel and subscribed, very good video. I had an unusual motel experience several years ago. I was doing a bicycle tour and came to the tiny town of Mt. Dora, NM, three or four houses well off the road and a six unit motel between the road and railroad tracks. The motel looked ready for guests but not a soul around it. A storm was approaching so I was glad to find shelter. The office was locked but none of the rooms. No water or electric so I rolled my sleeping bag out on a bed, spent the night and rode on the next morning, still without ever seeing a soul.

This looks like a good setting for the Bates Motel series that's on tv, season 3. Looks like it used to be a nice place. Seems like a lot of these places went under when the freeways were built to bypass them, taking most traffic away, or the large shopping centers of the 80's and 90's drew ppl to other areas.
You're not going to believe this but I actually stayed there sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. It was still American owned then. I don't remember a whole lot about it except the diner that was in the motel was cheap and it used to have screen doors on it. It's funny what a person will remember when they see something like this about someplace they've been. I remember how unusual the lobby was for this type of place. Old neon lit court motels never had a grand lobby, that's why this one stood out for me. Haunted? You bet it's haunted. There is not a motel in existence that someone has not died in. I've stayed in motels that housekeepers have went in to clean a room and found a guy dead or in the last case this girl ODd on pills because she was facing time in prison. Her boyfriend found her, they were 2 doors down from me. I had a bit of a strange experience that went along with that, so yes, motels are haunted and I'm sure that one was no exception. But thanks for taking me back.
Who knows? Left the place trashed after binge eating and bulimia? Apparently, she was a repeat customer since they used only her first name and uncomplimentary description! Maybe she used different last names to re-book.
I stayed in a place just like this, only open for business. It was called Rodeway Inn in Virginia. Last refurbished maybe in the late 1970s or early 1980s. The lobby and brick ranch style buildings were virtually the same. There was no bar or restaurant. Those areas were closed off to the public and used as living quarters by the to Indian families who ran the place. For my purposes, it was suited me fine. I needed a reasonably clean place to sleep and bathe. The price was amazingly cheap for the proximity to D.C. and Arlington. The other customers appeared to be mainly senior citizens and single people in town on business, not tourists. I saw no sign of drugs, prostitution, etc. The door locked with an old fashioned metal key. I enjoy staying in these old places off the beaten trail. You meet local people and avoid tourist traps.

In a nutshell,it's a movie about a hazmat team that goes into an abandoned insane asylum and well-mayhem ensues.. anyway the movie was actually filmed at an actual psyche hospital that I think is located in the Seattle area??? Not really sure. The movie itself is a pretty great documentation of the place but it would definitely benefit being "Bellinized". i love near this place which is right next to a major highway.i remember driving past as a kid seeing the parking lot full.now i drive by and its sad to see such a once traveling icon run down . apparently some indian family boight it and it started to come back to life with truckers staying there and travelers.but i noticed in years past there was more druggie looking people and skinny black people staying there.there were always sitting outside there rooms. thats enough to drive people away.there is a few more motels like this one on that stretch of road that are just as creepy.now everytime i drive by i will think of this video.thanks dan

Punjabi is the region of India where they are from and is also their language. There are a number of motels in the United States that are owned by them. Just though you might be interested in this. It was pretty primitive and shabby but we made it home. There was about seven people living there at any time. There's no photos of the place on line but there's a few of the area. I use to work in motels in Branson for a couple years. 2003-2006 The Branson Inn was recently demolished to make build a new hospital. There were two 5000 sq ft penthouses on top of two of the buildings. Sad to see it go I really enjoy your videos.

Latest Google Street view shows the place getting renovated in Sept. 2019 and the satellite view from 2020 still shows a contractor truck and dumpsters. I can't imagine this place succeeding as a motel, maybe they're converting it to residential?
Hi Dan, Enjoy your adventures. In the 1970's we used to stay at an old Motel in Baltimore. It was close to the bay. Had a restaurant and pinball machine. Also a racing game. It might have been called Bayview, or Waters Edge or something like that. Had two floors. Looking out back, you could see what looked like a small hill with woods. I have no idea where it was. I was too young. Was hoping you might know what it was called or where it was?

My father owned this motel in the early 70'S and it was a thriving business. He built the Bar with the padding, served dinners with great food . The bar was a busy place then, lots of Washington DC came to visit at times. The economy killed this motel. We had a pool then as well.It is a shame to see it this way. I do understand and was notified today the motel is being renovated as close to the 50"s as they can get it. Today is 8/25/2018, we can wait and see!
When did your father sell the motel? I heard a family from India took over operations and drove it down with ideas like replacing the lobby with a nightclub
@@firedreferee736 I heard it was a section 8 living place in the 90s and it was infested with drugs and crime. The Indian man bought it in 2004 and kicked all the section 8 people out. But it did have a pool and a kid drown in it. Many people dont know bc it's no longer there . I believe that the original poster is telling the truth bc unless you grew up in that area you wouldn't know that information about the pool.
I think that every single time I watch these. It makes me so sad and angry that people and the government are so greedy that people are sleeping in the rain and snow when they could at least have shelter.

MrAkihiros well technically what he's doing is illegal. They don't enforce it, but abandoned places are still owned by people. The deed for the land doesn't just expire when the business goes down. So this is absolutely considered trespassing. Even if it's been foreclosed, the government still owns it. They won't enforce it on TH-cam and such social media sites, but if you were to make a commercialized TV show with sponsors, chances are you couldn't get away with doing illegal things as the premise of the show, even if they're harmless unenforced things.
Anna A company/production studio could ask permission before exploring the premise and maybe get a little background on the lot as well. I don't want this to become a tv show though, I like that Dan has free creative ability to do whatever he pleases.

Why would a minimum waged motel employee 'come back' after the joint closed? I don't think there were any 'fuck its' involved, when a place goes bankrupt the staff is let go. No reunions are held.

It seems that they just didn't come back one day. The beds were left made, the load in the washer, cartons in the fridge, all the paperwork left behind, soap bar in the tub. That is what creeps me out the most.

My grandma actually ran this place for a time twenty three years ago. We had so much fun there, It changed a lot over the years! Thanks for sharing.

This looks like a good setting for the Bates Motel series that's on tv, season 3. Looks like it used to be a nice place. Seems like a lot of these places went under when the freeways were built to bypass them, taking most traffic away, or the large shopping centers of the 80's and 90's drew ppl to other areas.
You're right..95 killed this place. The area this is in is 10 miles from anything either way. That probably helped kill it too.

You're not going to believe this but I actually stayed there sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. It was still American owned then. I don't remember a whole lot about it except the diner that was in the motel was cheap and it used to have screen doors on it. It's funny what a person will remember when they see something like this about someplace they've been. I remember how unusual the lobby was for this type of place. Old neon lit court motels never had a grand lobby, that's why this one stood out for me. Haunted? You bet it's haunted. There is not a motel in existence that someone has not died in. I've stayed in motels that housekeepers have went in to clean a room and found a guy dead or in the last case this girl ODd on pills because she was facing time in prison. Her boyfriend found her, they were 2 doors down from me. I had a bit of a strange experience that went along with that, so yes, motels are haunted and I'm sure that one was no exception. But thanks for taking me back.

I stayed in a place just like this, only open for business. It was called Rodeway Inn in Virginia. Last refurbished maybe in the late 1970s or early 1980s. The lobby and brick ranch style buildings were virtually the same. There was no bar or restaurant. Those areas were closed off to the public and used as living quarters by the to Indian families who ran the place. For my purposes, it was suited me fine. I needed a reasonably clean place to sleep and bathe. The price was amazingly cheap for the proximity to D.C. and Arlington. The other customers appeared to be mainly senior citizens and single people in town on business, not tourists. I saw no sign of drugs, prostitution, etc. The door locked with an old fashioned metal key. I enjoy staying in these old places off the beaten trail. You meet local people and avoid tourist traps.

jepp. that was the wind :) i know that from other buildings over here in germany. somtimes it sounds like a little child is whispering. thats the sound of the wind. when there is a lot of old paper in the rooms, it can also sounds like somebody is walking over the floor :)

Ok so there's a somewhat obscure horror film called "Session 9". In a nutshell,it's a movie about a hazmat team that goes into an abandoned insane asylum and well-mayhem ensues.. anyway the movie was actually filmed at an actual psyche hospital that I think is located in the Seattle area??? Not really sure. The movie itself is a pretty great documentation of the place but it would definitely benefit being "Bellinized". Other trivia is this film stars David Caruso before his csi Miami role blew up. Love your videos and commentary. Keep exploring and be careful.

i love near this place which is right next to a major highway.i remember driving past as a kid seeing the parking lot full.now i drive by and its sad to see such a once traveling icon run down . apparently some indian family boight it and it started to come back to life with truckers staying there and travelers.but i noticed in years past there was more druggie looking people and skinny black people staying there.there were always sitting outside there rooms. thats enough to drive people away.there is a few more motels like this one on that stretch of road that are just as creepy.now everytime i drive by i will think of this video.thanks dan
That publication at 4:07 is an interesting find. The man with the blue turban is a Sikh which means the language that the paper is written in is Punjabi. Punjabi is the region of India where they are from and is also their language. There are a number of motels in the United States that are owned by them. Just though you might be interested in this. By the way nice video! I do enjoy urbex videos from time to time. They can be an interesting way of studying a country.

Dan, I watched this quite some time ago but I never heard the bang or the creaking door that time. Today (08-05-2016) I heard it very clearly. What in the world are you thinking by saying "...I'm just 'gonna go check..."? Were you impersonating some character on one of those teen Friday the 13th horror flicks? Hell! Why not just announce out loud "...Gee, whiz? What was that noise? Probably just the wind. Oh, well, I'm just gonna get naked now and take a shower...". All kidding aside, wish we lived closer to each other. I'd love to have a willing and interested urban exploring partner to do these things with. Be careful and have fun.

A group of my friends and I lived in an abandoned hotel, in a small town on the west coast (South Island). in New Zealand. We loved it. There certainly a lot of bizarre goings on, and I don't just mean the mushrooms. Freaky, creepy and in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Two of my friends found it one day. They found out who owned it and he said he didn't care what they did there. They managed to get the electricity hooked up. It was pretty primitive and shabby but we made it home. There was about seven people living there at any time. There's no photos of the place on line but there's a few of the area. I use to work in motels in Branson for a couple years. 2003-2006 The Branson Inn was recently demolished to make build a new hospital. There were two 5000 sq ft penthouses on top of two of the buildings. Sad to see it go I really enjoy your videos.

Latest Google Street view shows the place getting renovated in Sept. 2019 and the satellite view from 2020 still shows a contractor truck and dumpsters. I can't imagine this place succeeding as a motel, maybe they're converting it to residential?
Hi Dan, Enjoy your adventures. In the 1970's we used to stay at an old Motel in Baltimore. It was close to the bay. Had a restaurant and pinball machine. Also a racing game. It might have been called Bayview, or Waters Edge or something like that. Had two floors. Looking out back, you could see what looked like a small hill with woods. I have no idea where it was. I was too young. Was hoping you might know what it was called or where it was?

Crime & Detective shows which like you said earlier Motels seem to have a Big Crime Element ! - So we are accustomed to buildings like this - Even though we don't have any buildings that look like this on our motorways or A roads -Thanks for sharing and good look with the series

My father owned this motel in the early 70'S and it was a thriving business. He built the Bar with the padding, served dinners with great food . The bar was a busy place then, lots of Washington DC came to visit at times. The economy killed this motel. We had a pool then as well.It is a shame to see it this way. I do understand and was notified today the motel is being renovated as close to the 50"s as they can get it. Today is 8/25/2018, we can wait and see!

@@firedreferee736 I heard it was a section 8 living place in the 90s and it was infested with drugs and crime. The Indian man bought it in 2004 and kicked all the section 8 people out. But it did have a pool and a kid drown in it. Many people dont know bc it's no longer there . I believe that the original poster is telling the truth bc unless you grew up in that area you wouldn't know that information about the pool.

I remember when the creators of Homestar Runner were explaining why they'd never make a TV version. The TV station funds you & you make money, but they take away all of your creative control & censor stuff. I think Jhonen Vasquez said that about working for Nickelodeon too.
MrAkihiros well technically what he's doing is illegal. They don't enforce it, but abandoned places are still owned by people. The deed for the land doesn't just expire when the business goes down. So this is absolutely considered trespassing. Even if it's been foreclosed, the government still owns it. They won't enforce it on TH-cam and such social media sites, but if you were to make a commercialized TV show with sponsors, chances are you couldn't get away with doing illegal things as the premise of the show, even if they're harmless unenforced things.
Anna A company/production studio could ask permission before exploring the premise and maybe get a little background on the lot as well. I don't want this to become a tv show though, I like that Dan has free creative ability to do whatever he pleases.

It seems that they just didn't come back one day. The beds were left made, the load in the washer, cartons in the fridge, all the paperwork left behind, soap bar in the tub. That is what creeps me out the most.
Perhaps converting the lobby into a nightclub filled the rooms with noise and guests used other inns while in the area.
When they filed for bankruptcy that's really all they can do. They can't really take things. It's probably being sold as is for profit
