I can see your fulcrum point is around the second joint of the index finger. I've found that using the first joint of the index finger gives me the maximum potential use of energy that comes out of a wrist stroke because you're using the far end of the hand (and fingers). It makes my wrist strokes and open/close strokes way more relaxed, controllable and consistent.
Do you have any experience with choosing the 'best fulcrum point' possible? Great videos, Joe!

ccNuts if you’re playing palm down like I am here, then you need something solid for the stick to hinge against. In fact, when it bounces up, the fulcrum point is like a V between the hand knuckle of my index and middle knuckle of my thumb.
To try and do this technique palm down with the fat joint of the index would require a bit of squeezing to stop it from sliding into the gap above, and you’d be using more energy than necessary, and you’d be restricting the motion of the stick.
Different thing if you’re playing french grip with your thumb on top.

@@PolyNome Thanks for the response! I actually meant the first joint starting from the tip (fingernail) of the index finger. (sorry for being unclear haha)
If you start from up there, which joint do you think is the most efficient? The first or the second one? I feel like it's also easier switching between palm down or french grip while using the first joint starting from the top.

ccNuts I knew what you meant, I was just pointing out that when I do the push pull palm down the fulcrum moves to the very bottom of my index finger.
My fulcrum changes. I’ve experimented with many options. Sometimes it’s a fulcrum with middle finger joints and the index doesn’t play much of a part. Sometimes it’s the first joint of my index. Sometimes the second.
I used to have it at the first joint of my index finger, but I found it a little unstable for heavier playing. If you have it at the second joint of your index finger; the tip of the index finger can more easily be part of any finger control - all 4 finger tips can be part of the action.
If you email me at joe@joecrabtree.com I’ll send you one of my VIP lessons where I talk more about that kind of thing.

Playing and buzzing with a closed hand may cause wrist pain, so be careful on that initial technique.

Agreed. I didn't mean to spend a lot of time doing that. Just a few hits so you can feel what it's like for your fingers to be closed at the point where the stick makes contact.
