I’ve been fumbling with logic pro for three years now. Being a complete audio novice and this is the first time I am seeing such a structured and directed approach to learning. I’m still still on the first few clips so hope I make it through. Thank you, Mr. music tech help guy. I sent you a small thank you.
Just wanna say, I've been to so many Logic Pro video tutorials. You are by far the best! Even I, a 69 year old can understand. :) Thank you so much!...Steve

I am so very grateful for you and all the videos you put out for us and how much you help. You are the absolute BEST at explaining everything and I couldn’t have discovered you at a more perfect time. I just got a new MacBook Pro after being on PC laptops using fl studio for years up until a week ago. Your work is appreciated so very much. You’re the best, thank you!
Just bought my first Mac and am switching from Reaper - your videos were universally recommended as the best way to learn Logic and I gotta say I agree. Thank you!
Man, you are my great Logic Pro Professor, I can't thank you enough for everything I learned and keep learning from you, you are great, you are the best, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you 3000 for your channel. You make everything so straight forward and easier to learn. I m sticking with your channel for all things Logic. It’s only logical.
This series of videos explaining how to use Logic Pro are absolutely fantastic and by far best I've seen. Thanks so much its really appreciated. It has now brought my level of understanding to a point where I can now comfortably navigate my way around the software
Josh, many thanks for these tutorials - very easy to understand, and very well-explained. I've been a Windows users for 30 years, but recently, have been asked to supply drum tracks for some recordings using the Roland TD27-KV2 kit. After acoustic drumming for some 50 years, digital, as well as Mac, Midi, Logic Pro, etc. is all new to this old beater, so the simplicity of explanation in your video tutorials is much appreciated - thank you. - - Steve
Im somewhat competent in Logic, but not a pro by any means. Watching the whole series from the start. Im on the first video and you already taught me how to save 60GB on my internal disk! Looking forward to the rest!
I am on board... I love the look and feel of Logic.. Was looking for a no-nonsense tutorial and boy, have I found one. Thank you in advance and I am still in the 3rd part....
Wow. As a long time Logic user looking to up-skill, I thought I'd skip your first couple of videos, but damn, even this first one taught me things I didn't know about! I hope Apple buys the rights to your videos because the links to them should be embedded in the official manual for sure.
Thanks, MTHG. Have used Logic (10.3.3) for years but wasn't sure how to get started with such an abrupt upgrade to 10.7.7. This video is just what I needed. Looking forward to learning more from you.
No, I didn’t say hard time i said I have been working Ableton for over a decade! Before that it was Cubase.. I was anti-digi design back in the old days - I didn’t know how dope logic really was Dude… But yeah, this is cool. You got some good videos.
What a great resource you and these videos are!! Thank you so much for creating these tutorials. I wasn't even aware of some of this content. Perfecto!!
If a user decides to save projects as folders instead of packages, be very mindful of file and folder organization. Always make a new folder in your Logic directory for the new project. Save your folders in there. If you don’t do that you run the risk of over writing files. I’ve been hired to help mix projects and the client had everything co mingled in folder on an external drive. Every Logic project we opened had missing audio files. This was most likely because a newer file with the same name over wrote the older file. Or they were saved in the wrong location. There were a lot of other folders on the drive. It was a mess. This can’t happen if you save as a package. If you feel you need to manually manipulate audio files in the project, Logic has a file browser. You can even use the browser to import parts of other Logic sessions, including channel strip settings. Or you can right click and choose show package contents. I’ve never found a reason to do that. It also makes sharing projects easier, which I do often when collaborating with other musicians.
@@BeBoMaMu Some people are very adamant about saving as folders. They seem to feel it gives them more control over their files. great job of explaining. In my case, my external sound library seems to have gone bad, so I disconnected the drive with the plan to download a fresh copy to my Mac and relocate later. The problem is - how can you tell when the sound library download process has begun? I see now progress bar, pop up dialog at all. So I cant tell if it's working...

Great intro for beginners like me. Thanks for doing this! I successfully installed Logic Pro and relocated my Sound Library to an external SSD. Is it better to save project files on the internal HD or the SSD?
Hi, nice video. Is there a way to tell Logic Pro where the relocated instruments are? For instance, I have LP on a lap top. I use it with one drive at home. But when I go to a gig, I use a separate drive, slower and cheaper (in case it walks away). I want to be able to point LP to the new library, and then back again when I return home. There must be some kind of pointer in a plist or something. Any thoughts?
So I installed sound the sound library on an external and it shows it's been installed there. Yet in logic it says the sounds need to be downloaded. How do I re attach (if that's the right word) my external drive library to logic?
Did you ever figure this out? Mine is also currently greyed out and it says that its existing there, don't want to have to reformat the entire drive to get it all back because I have other libraries in there....
amazing as always, but now I'm trying to better understand how to call up pianos and other sounds from the library. can you point me to a library tutorial? - I open a new empty project - choose software instrument if I don't choose "empty channel strip" from the instrument menu I end up with alchemy. the problem is that my library is then limited to showing only alchemy sounds and things get messy when I switch to say a piano. the piano I'm guessing lives in the sampler, but I can't even find it when I choose the sampler instrument. I think this deserves a video if you haven't already done one on the library. It is important to note that in the folder called the library on the computer when I enter the audio library there is a folder called "Apple Loops" and in it are all the loops that I am pretty sure should appear in the loops browser. I couldn't find any reference to this kind of problem on the web, forums and Apple support site. It's really frustrating. Does this problem sound familiar to you? Do you have any idea how to fix this?
Thank you so much for making this tutorial. It is very easy to follow and I am taking notes like crazy. One question I have is, once you relocate you sound library will new downloads go to the new location or do you have to hit relocate again? Thank you :)
Thank you. Would you be able to make a video about how to transfer Logic from one Mac to another, without losing any stock and 3rd party settings and templates?
Hey, Can I download the sound library directly to an external hard drive as I do not have the memory to put it to my computer first... Thanks for great content.
Just for reference in case others R wondering, I did have room on my laptop so still unsure if U can download straight to external hard drive, but I don't think U can
Thanks for all your videos. Very helpful I have one question. Once you relocate your sound libraries to an external drive, Is it as simple as just deleting the sound library from your computer hard drive to regain the space. If not, what is the procedure for deleting the sound library To reclaim the space on your hard drive. Thanks in advance for your answer
Hey Josh. Excited about your new series. I have a question please, about relocating the sound library. Once you relocate to an external hard drive I guess you still need to delete the files on the internal drive, correct? Or does Logic automatically delete those files? Thanks a lot.
I believe it automatically moves the files, so they should not be located on your internal drive. No need to delete anything. But I think it does keep some essential sounds on your internal drive.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Wonderful. And thank you for taking the time to respond! I really, really dig your videos - content and format. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Hello Josh, if I relocate my sound library how do I obtain clips and loops back into a Logic project? (I know the answer is going to be simple but I need to know. My iMac has suddenly become very slow and I wonder if the massive library is bogging it down) Thanks!
@@gianni1646 The loop library stays in the same place in terms of the Logic interface. You're accessing them from the loop library, they are just located externally. Same goes for the sample libraries in the software instruments. When you relocate the library, you can continue to use Logic just as you have done before, you just have to make sure the external drive is connected and turned on.
hello, great tutorial but i was just wondering if you could help me i'm having trouble figuring out which disk i have to install it on. I'd appreicate if i could get a response thank you
Thanks for the great video, really appreciate your work as always I already have my library located on an external hard drive, but somehow I lost the connection between them. Is there a way to to locate and connect them again without the need to download the whole library once again?
Question: Did you happen to change the name of the drive itself? Or did you change the name of any of the folders leading up to the sound library? That might cause the file path to be "confused".
hey there, I just updated my logic to 10.7.6 and my OS is Ventura 13.1 and it refuses to open and says updating information about audio plug ins. HELP!!!! Any help is appreciated w Much thanks!!!!
If it's crashing on boot up, it's probably because one of your plugins is corrupted/incompatible/having an issue with the newest version of Logic/MacOS. See what plugin it's scanning when it crashes, and delete that plugin and see if it resolves the issue. then re-install the latest version of the plugin and see if it works again. This has been my experience when something like this happens.
I wanna ask a issue in logic about audio import. Some audio files are automatically sync tempo on drag drop or audio import even if I don’t want to follow tempo. And when I turned off flex & follow off the audio file sounds very scratched poor. Whats the solution for it please reply 🙏
Hi MTHG. Thanks for all the great videos, its been a great help. I have an issue with my sound library within Logic Pro. Its been working fine but recently I discovered that most of the instruments in the library are no longer available. The missing instruments are showing up written in grey instead of white. When setting up Logic i bought a dedicated 2TB external hard drive for the sample library. It was working fine! I don't know whats happened! Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks!
is it possible to change the file path for the sounds in the sound library manager? i relocated my file path to my external drive but for some reason when downloading more sounds they download onto my mac directly. thanks
Hi @musictechhelpguy any ideas how I can get around this error script when trying to relocate my sound library to EXT HDD (I would like to keep it a time machine backup drive): 'Time machine backup drive. This machine can not host your sound library' ??
What would happen if i upgraded my osx, from 11 to 12, even though my machine is a mid 2015 iMac? Would osx 12 post? I want to buy the lagtest version of Logic ...
I'm trying to find out what the Legacy Algorithms are for under: Edit>Time Stretch>Time Stretching Algorithms>Legacy Algorithms. It's in the Edit in the audio Edit window when you double click on an audio region to bring up the editor. What are all those for? I can't find a single video on the topic. Ableton has some sweet warp modes for time stretching I believe F if I actually know but I swear you can time stretch it for different results and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with these Time Stretching Algorithms but IDK. Um Help!
Relocate, it was not clear if logic moves everything from one location to another, does it redownload everything from the web and we then have to delete the previous location's content? Does it do like Native instrument, just assigne the sounds to a new location, or really physically 'move' from one place to another? And so we dont have to do it because Logic does that? That is strange that Logic would act as a computer and physically move the content to an external drive, I have a hard time picturing this. Does it moves them from one place to the other so you dont have to delete them from the older location...? Thanks
Thank for your tutorial, they're very well done!! I would ask for an help because it seems that in my Logic Pro X vers. 10.1 there isn't the function 'Sound Library/Relocate Sound Library. Any suggests? Thanks a lot
All I want to do is take my existing track and apply a vocal autotune to it. That’s it - period. I managed to import the file (mp3) but I couldn’t select the bars I wanted to set key and tweak - can you help?
Hey if you relocate the sound library to an external drive, does the drive need to be SSD (like the new Mac HDs) or is HDD okay? Is performance crucial for those sounds/samples? Great videos musictechhelpguy, very inspiring.
(Thank you) - What are your thoughts regarding locating the sound library to iCloud to provide multi-system access (I use a desktop system at home, and a laptop elsewhere when I am out and about)??
Is that possible? I think it would be a bad idea, because unless you have business-grade internet connection, you're going to have a really tough time loading sample libraries and instruments from the Cloud. The only thing the cloud is useful for in Audio these days is plugin licensing and sharing projects, IMO.
Your excellent! Is it possible to have everything on an external drive, program and all ( logic ), a sort of boot disk style of using it, like in the old days?
I'm not sure, but I can't imagine Logic would run well from an external drive. The Logic app itself is only 1.86 gigs, so you're not really saving that much space.
In this video I demonstrate the following:
1. How to install Logic Pro and add the application to the dock
2. How to find the Logic projects folder and add it to the Finder sidebar
3. How to turn on the complete features in Logic (aka advanced tools)
4. How to install the sound library and relocate it to an external hard drive
Enjoy!

Thank you! very much !
I love Logic Projic
hello, great tutorial but i was just wondering if you could help me i'm having trouble figuring out which disk i have to install it on. I'd appreicate if i could get a response thank you
Thank you.
Thanks for the great video, really appreciate your work as always
I already have my library located on an external hard drive, but somehow I lost the connection between them.
Is there a way to to locate and connect them again without the need to download the whole library once again?
Question: Did you happen to change the name of the drive itself? Or did you change the name of any of the folders leading up to the sound library? That might cause the file path to be "confused".
@@MusicTechHelpGuy Thanks for the reply. Actually, I didn’t change anything, this happened when I upgraded to the new MacOS Monterey.
you"re the best
👌I just started
Great as always, thank you. Does it slow things down a lot if you have the sound library on an external drive?
I have noticed that using a mechanical drives slow it down a bit, for sure. If you have an SSD, you shouldn't see much of a difference.
When I relocated my sound library logic would crash all the time.
hey there, I just updated my logic to 10.7.6 and my OS is Ventura 13.1 and it refuses to open and says updating information about audio plug ins.
@@MusicTechHelpGuy tx!
can I download the entire sound library directly to my SSD or do I have to install on Mac HD then move location ?
thank you
I wanna ask a issue in logic about audio import. Some audio files are automatically sync tempo on drag drop or audio import even if I don’t want to follow tempo. And when I turned off flex & follow off the audio file sounds very scratched poor. Whats the solution for it please reply 🙏
Many tahnks
Many thanks!
must the files be loaded onto the main Mac internal drive 'before" "relocating" sample library?
is it possible to change the file path for the sounds in the sound library manager? i relocated my file path to my external drive but for some reason when downloading more sounds they download onto my mac directly. thanks
is 800 mbp/s read and write enough for putting the sample library in externa ssd?
Can Logic pro be installed on mac m1 chip 16''? If so, how is the compatibility of plugins (VSTs)
The option in Logic to move the library will not move the Apple Loops, only the instruments samples from Alchemy or EXS...
