Steve was one of a kind, in the best way. And that "was" California in the 60's and 70's. Hot Rods, dragstrips, dirt bikes, dune buggies, surfing, skateboards... Very lucky to have been there.

McQueen was a genius in his own right, the Real Deal. My favorite actor in my most favorite movies. He reminds me of my Dad in some ways.

Steve McQueen was the epitome of cool and in the early seventies I used to see him all the time at Indian Dunes in Valencia California, racing his various Husqvarna Motocross bikes on the International Course. He was an incredible rider and racer,. In Fact, I raced mini bikes at that time against his son Chad who tragically passed away today. 9/12/24

According to writer Harlan Ellison, McQueen kept on reshooting his stunt on the motorcycle for hours on end until it was perfect. He then rode his dune buggy out alone to scout for shooting locations. Almost three hours later McQueen returned on foot. His buggy had broken down, forcing him to walk back "without shirt, without water" through "114 degrees of killing heat". Shooting continued on the buggy. Then reshoots. Lots of reshoots. Sullivan almost fainted, it was so hot. At the end of the day, someone asked the soundman if the noise of the camera rolling was audible. He said "Of course". They asked "What does he mean 'Of course?'" The soundman seemed at a loss. "The sound is loud through all the stuff we shot today...everything." The crew couldn't quite believe it. The entire day's shooting had been pointless. All the shoots, reshoots, the buggy breaking down, McQueen marching through the killing heat, Sullivan almost fainting. It had all been for nothing. McQueen's face changed. Nobody moved. Then McQueen took a deep breath and said: "We'll start over tomorrow."

Ellison was with McQueen in the dune buggy when it broke down. On the walk back Ellison collapsed from the heat. So, McQueen picked him up in a "fireman's carry" and packed him (Ellison) the rest of the way in. Ellison credits McQueen with saving his life that day.

Bruce Lee nearly sh*t himself when he went with McQueen for a ride in his Porsche. But that wasn't on the sand dunes, but in LA and roads he frantically drove on were narrow, very bendy and steep cliffs on one side, Mulholland drive I think. James Coburn told this story and said Bruce found himself under the passenger seat, scared sh*tless and Steve had to look for him first and then be told by Bruce he was going to kill him - in no uncertain terms and without trying to be funny. Steve according to Coburn was a rallye racing type of driver. haha, that must have been so epic. :D

For Ed Sullivan, that was very loose. He made Nixon look like Hugh Hefner. From Jimi Hendrix to Dinah Shore, his show had something for everybody.
