Okay, you convinced me. I'm a committed wood burner (zero electric heat and 100% wood), and we are about to move where winters are a lot colder and longer. Got to get the firewood plan more streamlined, and you peaked my interest with this tool. Just scored a peavey 606 pulp hook on ebay for $30. Excited to try it. Thanks Billy Ray for the tips
As a mechanic I completely understand the easy on the hands. No shame in saving your body whether it’s hands, back, feet, whatever. Smarter not harder brother! Gotta say thank you Buckin. For everything you’ve created here. Great people gathered around a great man. Just being yourself and teaching and showing the world your passion. You’ve created a positive place for people to just come watch and be apart of something that’s good, unbiased, clean, and honest. Thank you sir. And yes that ram horn muffler would be awesome. Built a few different mufflers but I’m real tempted to attemp that ram horn. I’ve got a 181se project that would be a great candidate.
My brother searched Craigslist for “can’t pass smog” and “won’t pass smog.” He found a Dodge D-50 for darn near nothing, got it to his property, then hinged the bed to make it a dump bed. He installed an electric winch on an A frame between the cab and bed to lift the front of the bed. The winch is cheaper and easier to fabricate than hydraulics. It isn’t registered, but it will never leave his property. He calls it his wheelbarrow!
I am slowly building up my wood handling tool arsenal. Bought a cant hook when I started sawing big logs into firewood. Now I don't run my run my chain into the ground. Also bought a hookaroon which has helped a good bit. My next purchase is going to be pulp hooks. They look extremely helpful. I am glad that you put all this information out you TH-cam. It has helped me out a good bit. Sorry for all the rambling lol. Just wanted to let you know you sharing your knowledge is appreciated. Thank you.
It’s a pulp hook. Back in the day they were used to handle 4’ Pulp. Saves the back and makes it much easier to handle pulp. Great for firewood too. I have a two and use them every day.
love u buckin billy Ray! you bring so much joy to me and are quite the inspiration! but i gotta say, you're using it backwards to me. i know your stuck in your ways and probably won't care, but i find these tips really usefull. i hold the hook in my right hand and when tossing the wood the hook is not in front of the wood like you, but behind it! also when you spin your chain when sharpening you spin the chain the wrong way! I'm not trying to be a prick, just pointing out a couple tips that i have learned along the way. I have made alot of my money doing Fall and Burn in Alberta and i single handed pilled for one of the highest production fallers in the game. Have a good day and maybe add these tools to your kit! would be good to show people to make some change in the culture for everyone's benefit!
Thanks for the video Billy. I’ve been using pulp hooks for years. Great tool, I use 2 for lifting heavy rounds onto my splitter without a hydronic log lift. Real back saver !
That shot in the beginning with all 3 trucks sure would look good on a canvas. Thanks for sharing your toys and your playground. And your energy of course! Buckin’ Eh!!
I’ll be real interested to see how it goes on Australia hardwood or the old dogwood or what we call ironbark which is a really dark red colour good slow burning throws a lot of heat ! Thanks my bro for the tips ! It’s gotta save my back !
I love my axeroon, use it all the time. I'm 6'7" and bending over is a long way for me. Yes BBR is using pine for firewood, I have all red oak and that is heavy stuff. Thx BBR
I've been following your vids for a while and subscribed today. I'm toying between one of these hooks and a hookaroon. Those old trucks were part of my childhood, my Dad had an old 70's Ranger that was orange, and my grandfather had a mid 60's Custom that was red. Miss those old trucks.
We love you in the USA Buckin Billy!! 🤩🤩 I like the shorter videos Buckin. I watch a lot of chainsaw videos & car & motor cycle racing! Have a Great day & God Bless our Canadian Friends!! 🤩🤩
My Grandpa and Dad and the old-timers, [now i just turned 70 iAug 19, am the old timer lol] called a $10.00 Bill here in SE Texas a saw buck, and a $ 20.00 Bill Double Sawbuck lol... youngsters probably never heard of that.. love ya BBRS.. Prayers and as always BE KIND! LOVE WINS! from SE Texas Bear Love that tool
Merely a suggestion. When you said about some leather on the handle I immediately thought of tennis racquet grip. You can buy them off the shelf in any sports shop to replace the grip.
Great channel and great video. Just be careful , I put one into my knee some years ago. and I am at emergency right now for the one I put into my ankle tonight.
The Pulp Hook, hookaroons, log peavy and more are available on Amazon. BTW BBRS, I live just south of you in the states and I LOVE your channel. You ROCK Brother!!! Keep on keepin' on !
Can’t beat PULP hooks, been using them for over a decade now. I’ve tried sappies or hookeroons or pickeroons what ever you wanna call em but the pulp hook is king especially with the replaceable tip.. the extra weight at the end is nice too for sinking the tip in frozen wood.
I need to get one of those pulp hooks. I've repurposed an old pair of ice tongs I got at the flea market for moving wood around when it's too small for the pickaroon
I definitely gotta have one of these hooks for my firewood gatherings!! They look as handy as a pocket on a shirt brother!! Lol keep safe and keep rocking these videos brother!
Buckin, you're the bees knees. I envy your wood pile, your trucks, axes and saws! I have the same wrist issues, im definetly getting myself a tool like that. Later brother!
Never had pulp hooks but had two different lengths of meat hanging hooks , handy as heck when you were faced with situations where you didn't want to put your hands .
I bought a hay hook and the tip bent the first time I tried to move some oak haha. I will look for these gripo pulp hooks! I was thinking maybe your tender timber was easier on pulp hooks but it's obvious this is just a good tool.
love my hook always wonder why you never see you use the tool with the same tip as hook but its on the end of a lite ax like handle really a great tool too for certain things ?
Around here most faller have one of those hook on their belt. Most of the time we are cutting in forest that will produce mapple sap and we have to make trail for the buncher so we pile up the 8' log that arent too heavy. Some even use them to bang wedges. You just have to get the right tip. Some are winter tip and other sommer tip. Get the winter tip and you are golden.
Hello frend! A timber hook!, I saw them growing up in the forest. The other one they called a "timber scissor" in Norwegian, the one that hooks around and you drag small logs with.
You don't necessarily need tools to prevent the injury. You need to work on compensating the abuse to balance the pressure and stress on your joints :) Whatever the tool, you will at some point keep reaching excessive stress point. That's why I work out accordingly to my daily work. And without changing tools, I got rid of stress due pains and I'm able to work more. Don't get me wrong, tools that help doing the job are a blessing but there is no magic. Take care! ✌
Serious Sharpening question friends… On a .325 round ground chain, using the recommended 3/16 file -- do you first file with downward pressure to “get the gullet, and 2nd clean up your working corner? Or do you file the gullet only and hope for the best up on the plate? Thanks 🙏
I mostly just focus on getting the gullet and then ease off to work on the top plate. Use a variety of pressure when you do it and focus the file where you need it. Not sure if that helps but it works for me.
Speaking of smarter not harder, nothing is easier or faster than taking just the pile by the window out of the truck bed first then leg pressing the rest out all at once. Plastic bed liners make this almost as easy as a dump bed.
I you stick the pulp hook on the side of the piece of wood and flick your wrist sideways on the release the wood should fly off true - first lesson I got from an old timer in the east coast pulp woods. Next, don't file to a needle sharp point - the old fellow sharpened to a wedge then whacked the end on an anvil to make what he called a "duck billed point." Good one piece hooks come like this - take a look, take a photo and copy it. If your point is sticking try to stay off end grain and reshape. Leave the replaceable carbide tip hooks in the store. The old school one piece are way better and won't let you down when you need it most. To move a big junk stick low on the side, pull and rotate. For a real big piece stick the end, flip up on another junk or two and use these to move the junk along - stick low on the side, spin, pull. I worked by the cord - minimum 5 cord a day of 8' wood stacked in neat 1 cord piles. The old guy in the strip next to me always did 7 cord a day and every time I looked it seemed he was standing there having a smoke. Amazing!
Buckin, bring that hook down here to Oklahoma and we'll see how it works in some ole Hickory or some Black Jack or Pecan, I'll bring the popcorn and cokes!
Hey man love the videos and positivity you bring so I have a question I’m in need of just one double bevel file for a .325 chain and I can’t find one do you know of anywhere I can find one for that size chain I’ve learned chisel chains are better and I want to learn and teach myself how to sharpen them using that file instead of a round file your help would much appreciated thanks
Your stamina and body strength must be unreal! Buckin, would you recommend sharpening this wood hook after a while? And how would you sharpen without blunting down that barb?
for throwing ? , very awkward for throwing , but love the pickaroon for reachin' in to the box when im stackin' it right out of the box straight to the shed , thx Stan

picaroon is also handy so you're not bending as much, and can reach to the back of the bed if standing on the ground at the tailgate.

I would like to learn how to properly sharpen the tip. Mine is a one piece unit. Great info:)
They are sooo nice for dragging 4 ft logs through the bush. If you have two you can move two four foot logs
