Thats how he can probably make up the difference in loss, add another precious gem as a filler and it might just raise the value of the gem more so then if you are to just leave it how it is, but then again the original later on might turn out to be worth more without the additions, its kinda a gamble on whats going to happen with value of it, but for aesthetics it would be beautiful to see

you could always drill a fine hole straight through so you could set a diamond or something in the hole, the peg to the gem would then be attached to the backing and also serve as a way of holding the opal down. not all is lost

Justin, I knapped my first opal arrowhead a couple days ago. I told Mr pultzer about it, I'm gonna tell you about it. The stone did not speak to me until the third flake removal. It then revealed more blue color play right across the middle. It's Australian. It is a crystal with blue color play. It has blue and black potch. Lighter color tone. Started the size of a u.s. quarter and finished right at the size of my thumbnail. It's a mark of my skill as a flintnapper as I waited over a year with it for it's day. Turned out amazing! And now I get to carry it with the other orange jasper arrowhead on my necklace.
I am glad to see you have worked on that stone. Sand hole or not, it is one of my favorites that you have worked on. Now, as a budding jeweler, I want to see how it is set.
Here's a thought. Inlay a piece of monocrystaline silicon of the type used to make integrated circuits. You can buy polished wafers or even chunks of it fairly inexpensively. It polishes to a dark mirror finish. It also kind of fits because opal is ultimately made of silicon.

I would have a cut green stone set flush in a gold tube setting within that whole. If you go with a deeper green, it won't take away from the opals beauty but it would also give it an elegant computer/alien feel to it.

My thought was to put a tiny yellow fire opal in the recess from the sand to compliment the color of the script. But it’s your stone and you are the expert! It looks amazing as is.

I think you should cut a small round piece of Fire Opal and add that to the center it would make the whole gem pop so much more. Could even inset a thin foil of Silver or Gold to catch the light underneath it and send it right back out to your eye. I'm no gem expert or jewelry expert in any way but I can just picture that in my mind as being so unique that nobody ever has or will in the future. ONE of a KIND! BEAUTIFUL!
For the life of me, I don't know why if a pattern resembles the actual Chinese written language and you nickname it "Chinese writing" how that's offensive in any way at all. It is literally just an acknowledgment that the pattern resembles the Chinese language in written form. Our planet is doomed I swear.

Script pattern sounds nice but if it would previously have been called German writing, because I'm German heritage, I would absolutely love to continue to call it German writing because I don't find anything politically incorrect with using the name of the country that is my heritage. Actually I find it a compliment and I don't understand why people would think its an insult or politically incorrect. To me it makes absolutely zero sense. The gem is very very beautiful and I enjoy watching what you do but also how you explain things.
