This is why I love this channel he is so genuine about everything he does even when he makes mistakes shows us that it is human to make mistakes and learn to bounce back and become good at everything you try.

I was a professional potter for over 45 years, now I’m retired and last year I started painting, I love it! It is never to late to learn something new!

I've been painting since I was a small child, in all mediums. AND every time I start a new art project, I still get that excitement rush, as I did with the first one. When I paint, I love doing ducks, swans, birds/fowl, ponds, waters, and most any kind of landscape. I will venture into many other types of arts as well. It expands us as individuals. Im working my way through your videos Alex and firstly I wanted to say Im really enjoying them. I am so impressed by your painting. When i was a lot younger I could draw Disney characters from a comic but that never seemed to help me when I did art at school. So I have always told myself I cant draw and therefore, cant paint, but having watched you and Nial I feel I could at least give it a try - thank you

It's unusual for oil paint artists to start with a white canvas as it makes it difficult to judge the tones you lay on top. Commonly the canvas is given a mid tone base layer all over and wiped away where the highlights are. White being replaced on top if needed.
Yes Stephen, you’re absolutely right. I’ll often work over a ground first. But in this case, teaching a complete beginner, with the goal of completing a painting in just a few hours, I opted to teach Alex with a simplified method.

That's A LOT of information for a begginer, oil paints aren't the easiest to use either. For someone starting off I'd recommend getting acrylic paints (they're cheap, dry fast and you can use water to dissolve it. Getting 5 paints is enough to make every color: black, white, magenta, pure yellow and cyan) and a sketchbook with thick paper. Making lots of smaller paintings is way better than one big study. I'd say, for a hobbyist painter, enjoying the process of learning/creating is a far more important than the finished result I hope you'd want to pick up a paint brush again someday and have more fun with it ❤

I've discovered Bob Ross on YT a while back. Now we (me and my 11 y old daughter) have several acrylic paintings covering our walls. It is a great relaxing hobby to pick up. She is more talented than me and the best thing is that she enjoys painting. If I had a wish it was getting her introduced into arts. She can only gain.
I'm an artist and my first watercolor teacher in college mentioned "The fear of the great white page". So he had us by some inexpensive paints, brushes and big sheets of paper. The assignment was to do something big, playing with the paint. I really liked him, a great teacher! Also, he bought my first painting! The challenge with watercolor is there is no white paint. If you want white in the painting, you have to avoid putting any color there. It's not easy! Your painting looks really good. You can be proud of yourself.

I think the best thing about oil painting is that you can always "scrape" off what you did or paint over what you did if you don't like it. If you did that good on your first day, imagine if you spent a hour a week just perfecting it.

Some years ago, I suddenly randomly painted a banch of a tree with cherry blossom, in the Japanese style. It worked really well. I was amazed.
