    First broadcast: Mar 2014.
Matisse was one of the most celebrated painters of the 20th century who, even in his own lifetime, enjoyed a level of popularity envied by other artists. But in 1941, after a near-fatal operation for cancer, he decided to give up painting and sought a new way of drawing in colour. Scissors replaced a paintbrush and with the unique skill of a tailor, he set about creating his now famous cut-outs, which have yet to be rivalled for their originality and daring.

Love this narrator....the epitome of British documentarian: accent, inquiry, liveliness and style.

I am surprised no one has pointed out that he stole ideas very much like his friend Picasso. His "Jazz" cutouts stylistically are verbatim copies of Stuart Davis' Jazz series. It's clear where he got his inspiration from. Compare @7:40 to xroads.virginia.edu/~asi/musi212/emily/davis.html. The Davis's pieces were done before 1940, and thus before Matisse had his operation, which induced the cutouts. So it was not the other way around. Great artists steal after all.

Would imagine that for Matisse, Icarus may have represented man’s utter hubris which may have appeared especially magnified in the folly of yet another world war

Self- Therapy through Art ... Matisse's life long quest to find his 'inner" artist gave him this reward. Every person can learn from this how to enjoy each day as you live it. Sunshine and Joy ... That was his theme. Let art be your happiness. -kate
